Emotion recognition is the process of identifying human emotions. It is made possible by processing various modalities including facial expressions, speech signals, biometricsignals, etc. Withtheadvancementsincomputingtechnologies,FacialEmo tion Recognition (FER) became important for several applications in which the user’s emotional state is required, such as emotional training for autistic children. The recent years witnessed a major leap in Artificial Intelligence(AI),specially neural networks for computer vision applications. In this thesis, we investigate the application of AI algo rithms for FER from static and dynamic data. Our experiments address the limitations and challenges of previous works such as limited generalizability due to the datasets. We compare the performance of machine learning classifiers and convolution neural networks (CNNs) for FER from static data (images). Moreover, we study the perfor mance of the proposed CNN for dynamic FER(videos),in addition to Long-ShortTerm Memory(LSTM)inaCNN-LSTM hybrid approach to utilize the temporal information in the videos. The proposed CNN architecture out performed the other classifiers with an accuracy of 86.5%. It also outperformed the hybrid approach for dynamic FER which achievedanaccuracyof74.6

METAPHYSICAL OR DIFFERENTIAL: FITZGERALD'S THE GREAT GATSBY UNDER DERRIDEAN CONCEPT OF LOVE

Jacques Derrida revolutionized Western Philosophy by reconsidering the previous ideas from a new perspective. In his view, human subjectivity is explained within the system of language and the meaning is conveyed through the concept of differánce. As such, he imparts the notion that nothing ever exists outside the text, yet the text is filled with innumerable meanings, not a specific one. The net of his deconstructive thinking cast vast enough to devote close critical attention to any previously regarded metaphysical idea like love. Transcendental or metaphysical love is a shorn of meaning in the Derridean notion of deconstruction. For Derrida, love as a communicable sign is confined to the rules of iterability which proves the free flow of signifiers. In this regard, Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby as one of the most critically studied works in America is recruited to examine the Derridean deconstructive notion of love. Gatsby is exclusively focused on seeking Daisy's transcendental love even at the expense of repeating the past. Nonetheless, the evanescent fluidity of the notion of love totally ruins Gatsby's chance of ever achieving Daisy's love. Accordingly, Gatsby's ultimate failure is expected for the reason that an "absolute moment" is never devoid of any trace of past or future time. Thus, The Great Gatsby attends to why the notion of love defies any metaphysical or transcendental status and instead it has differential and deferral meaning

Effect of clinical pathway implementation and patients' characteristics on outcomes of coronary artery bypass graft surgery

Recently, the use of Clinical Pathways (CP) as a method of delivering care was initiated and introduced at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands, and was used as a method of care for patients undergoing cardiac surgery since 2004 at the thoracic surgery department. The aim of this study was to determine the difference between CP and conventional care in terms of health related functional status (HRFS), depression, and anxiety, as well as to determine the relative contribution of CP towards an improved HRFS after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). We found that implementing a clinical pathway did not decrease the length of stay (LOS), and there was no difference between patients in relation to complications. We also found that patients in the conventional care plan improved more than patients in the CP concerning HRFS. In this study we also depicted that EuroSCORE was associated with physical functioning before and after surgery and with LOS and number of complications. Moreover, EuroSCORE was found to be a predictor of physical HRFS. In addition, we presented in this study the predictors of deterioration in HRFS after CBAG and the role played by Type D personality along with the mediating effect of change in anxiety and depression, leading to deterioration in HRFS. We established that history of angina, increased anxiety and depression were predictors of deterioration in HRFS, and by structural equation modeling we found that increased anxiety and depression mediated the relationship between Type D and deterioration mental and physical HRFS after CABG.

Genomics-Based Security Protocols: From Plaintext to Cipherprotein

The evolving nature of the internet will require continual advances in authentication and confidentiality protocols. Nature provides some clues as to how this can be accomplished in a distributed manner through molecular biology. Cryptography and molecular biology share certain aspects and operations that allow for a set of unified principles to be applied to problems in either venue. A concept for developing security protocols that can be instantiated at the genomics level is presented. A DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) inspired hash code system is presented that utilizes concepts from molecular biology. It is a keyed-Hash Message Authentication Code (HMAC) capable of being used in secure mobile Ad hoc networks. It is targeted for applications without an available public key infrastructure. Mechanics of creating the HMAC are presented as well as a prototype HMAC protocol architecture. Security concepts related to the implementation differences between electronic domain security and genomics domain security are discussed
