Traveling Granular Segregation Patterns in a Long Drum Mixer
Mixtures of granular media often exhibit size segregation along the axis of a
partially-filled, horizontal, rotating cylinder. Previous experiments have
observed axial bands of segregation that grow from concentration fluctuations
and merge in a manner analogous to spinodal decomposition. We have observed
that a new dynamical state precedes this effect in certain mixtures:
bi-directional traveling waves. By preparing initial conditions, we found that
the wave speed decreased with wavelength. Such waves appear to be inconsistent
with simple PDE models which are first order in time.Comment: 11 page
Timeline analysis and wavelet multiscale analysis of the AKARI All-Sky Survey at 90 micron
We present a careful analysis of the point source detection limit of the
AKARI All-Sky Survey in the WIDE-S 90 m band near the North Ecliptic Pole
(NEP). Timeline Analysis is used to detect IRAS sources and then a conversion
factor is derived to transform the peak timeline signal to the interpolated 90
m flux of a source. Combined with a robust noise measurement, the point
source flux detection limit at S/N for a single detector row is
Jy which corresponds to a point source detection limit of the
survey of 0.4 Jy.
Wavelet transform offers a multiscale representation of the Time Series Data
(TSD). We calculate the continuous wavelet transform of the TSD and then search
for significant wavelet coefficients considered as potential source detections.
To discriminate real sources from spurious or moving objects, only sources with
confirmation are selected. In our multiscale analysis, IRAS sources selected
above can be identified as the only real sources at the Point Source
Scales. We also investigate the correlation between the non-IRAS sources
detected in Timeline Analysis and cirrus emission using wavelet transform and
contour plots of wavelet power spectrum. It is shown that the non-IRAS sources
are most likely to be caused by excessive noise over a large range of spatial

A simple breath test for tuberculosis using ion mobility : a pilot study
Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world's major health burdens with 9.6 million new infections globally. Though considerable progress has been made in reduction of TB incidence and mortality, there is a continuous need for lower cost, simpler and more robust means of diagnosis. One method that may fulfil these requirements is in the area of breath analysis. In this study we analysed the breath of 21 patients with pulmonary or extra-pulmonary TB, recruited from a UK teaching hospital (University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire) before or within 1 week of commencing treatment for TB. TB diagnosis was confirmed by reference tests (mycobacterial culture), histology or radiology. 19 controls were recruited to calculate specificity; these patients were all interferon-gamma release assay negative (T.SPOTĀ®.TB, Oxford Immunotec Ltd.). Whole breath samples were collected with subsequent chemical analysis undertaken by Ion Mobility Spectrometry. Our results produced a sensitivity of 81% and a specificity of 79% for all cases of TB (pulmonary and extra-pulmonary). Though lower than other studies analysing pulmonary TB alone, we believe that this technique shows promise, and a higher sensitivity could be achieved by further improving our sample capture methodology
Childcare, choice and social class: Caring for young children in the UK
This paper draws on the results of two qualitative research projects examining parental engagements with the childcare market in the UK. Both projects are located in the same two London localities. One project focuses on professional middle class parents, and the other on working class families, and we discuss the key importance of social class in shaping parents' differential engagement with the childcare market, and their understandings of the role childcare plays in their children's lives. We identify and discuss the different "circuits" of care (Ball et al 1995) available to and used by families living physically close to each other, but in social class terms living in different worlds. We also consider parents' relationships with carers, and their social networks. We conclude that in order to fully understand childcare policies and practices and families' experiences of care, an analysis which encompasses social class and the workings of the childcare market is needed
Homozygous nonsense and frameshift mutations of the ACTH receptor in children with familial glucocorticoid deficiency (FGD) are not associated with long-term mineralocorticoid deficiency
Familial glucocorticoid deficiency (FGD) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by isolated glucocorticoid deficiency with preserved mineralocorticoid secretion. Mutations in the ACTH receptor (MC2R) account for approximately 25% of all FGD cases, but since these are usually missense mutations, a degree of receptor function is frequently retained. A recent report, however, suggested that disturbances in the renin-aldosterone axis were seen in some patients with potentially more severe MC2R mutations. Furthermore, MC2R knock out mice have overt aldosterone deficiency and hyperkalaemia despite preservation of a normal zona glomerulosa. We wished to determine whether a group of patients with severe nonsense mutations of the MC2R exhibited evidence of mineralocorticoid deficiency, thereby challenging the conventional diagnostic feature of FGD which might result in diagnostic misclassification
Fate of lesion-related side branches after coronary artery stenting
AbstractObjectives. The aim of this study was to assess the immediate and long-term patency of lesion-associated side branches after coronary artery stenting.Background. The possible adverse effects related to implantation of coronary stents are not completely known. An important potential complication of stenting is side branch occlusion due to mechanical obstruction or thrombosis.Methods. Serial coronary angiography was performed in 153 patients (167 lesions) at baseline, after conventional balloon angioplasty, immediately after Palmaz-Schatz stent placement and at 6 months. The patency of side branches, where present, was analysed at each of these points.Results. Of 167 lesions stented, 57 stent placements spanned 66 side branches with a diameter ā„1 mm. Twenty-seven (41%) of these side branches had ā„50% ostial stenosis before standard balloon angioplasty. Six side branches became occluded after standard balloon angioplasty and remained occluded after stenting. Of the 60 side branches patent after conventional angioplasty, 57 (95%) remained patent immediately after stenting. All three side branches that became occluded after stenting had ā„50% ostial stenosis at baseline. All 60 side branches, including the 3 initially occluded after stenting, were patent at 6-month follow-up.Conclusions. These findings demonstrate that 1) acute side branch occlusion due to coronary stenting occurs infrequently; 2) when side branch occlusion occurs, it is associated with intrinsic ostial disease; and 3) the patency of side branch ostia is well maintained at long-term follow-up
The message or the bottle? Community, associationism and adult learning as āpart of the process of social changeā
Raymond Williams argued that the āthe impulse to adult educationā was never solely focused on āremedying deficit, making up for inadequate educational resources in the wider societyā (Williams, 1983, in McIlroy and Westwood (Eds), 1993, p. 257). Nor was it primarily a response to āmeeting new needs of the societyā. This chapter argues, as Williams did, that adult education has to be more than āthe bottle with the message in it, bobbing on the tides and waves of historyā (ibid, p. 255), springing urgently, instead, from the āthe desire to make learning part of the process of social change itself (ibid, p. 257).
Williamsā assertion suggests that Adult Educationās political purpose comes through the lens of community and associationism and their contribution to an āethic of serviceā and to social justice. Concepts such as āsocial mobilityā and āaspirationā are politically freighted ideas which mask real knowledge dispossession and social precarity. This chapter explores the important role adult education can play in āleft behindā communities in the grip of decline, focusing on the role of residential colleges and also non-formal, family and community learning in engaging at community level with those who have no overt āvoiceā in the political system. Finally, the chapter explores the role of adult education in consciousness raising and in the construction of āresources for a journey of hopeā, examining how awareness of community history and labour struggles have provided continuity and resilience in times of escalating turbulence
Amides do not always work: observation of guest binding in an amide-functionalised porous host
An amide-functionalised metal organic frame-work (MOF) material, MFM-136, shows a high CO2 uptake of 12.6 mmol g-1 at 20 bar and 298 K. MFM-136 is the first example of acylamide pyrimidyl isophthalate MOF without open metal sites, and thus provides a unique platform to study guest bind-ing, particularly the role of free amides. Neutron diffraction reveals that, surprisingly, there is no direct binding between the adsorbed CO2/CH4 molecules and the pendant amide group in the pore. This observation has been confirmed un-ambiguously by inelastic neutron spectroscopy. This suggests that introduction of functional groups solely may not neces-sarily induce specific guest-host binding in porous materials, but it is a combination of pore size, geometry, and functional group that leads to enhanced gas adsorption properties
