A simplicial model for the Hopf map

We give an explicit simplicial model for the Hopf map S^3 -> S^2. For this purpose, we construct a model of S^3 as a principal twisted cartesian product K x_{eta} S^2, where K is a simplicial model for S^1 acting by left multiplication on itself, S^2 is given the simplest simplicial model and the twisting map is eta:(S^2)_n -> (K)_{n-1}. We construct a Kan complex for the simplicial model K of S^1. The simplicial model for the Hopf map is then the projection K x_{eta} S^2 -> S^2

Ello les llevó a publicar el trabajo en Cd-Rom fácilmente transferible a la red. Concluye la autora que la antropología y las ciencias sociales en general no han sabido aún aprovechar las potencialidades abiertas por las nuevas formas de comunicación para trasladar los resultados de sus investigaciones

First and second order semi-Markov chains for wind speed modeling

The increasing interest in renewable energy, particularly in wind, has given rise to the necessity of accurate models for the generation of good synthetic wind speed data. Markov chains are often used with this purpose but better models are needed to reproduce the statistical properties of wind speed data. We downloaded a database, freely available from the web, in which are included wind speed data taken from L.S.I. -Lastem station (Italy) and sampled every 10 minutes. With the aim of reproducing the statistical properties of this data we propose the use of three semi-Markov models. We generate synthetic time series for wind speed by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The time lagged autocorrelation is then used to compare statistical properties of the proposed models with those of real data and also with a synthetic time series generated though a simple Markov chain.Comment: accepted for publication on Physica

Co-trimoxazole prophylaxis in HIV : the evidence

BibliographyHuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) damages the body’s immune system, making secondary (or opportunistic) infections more common. Treatment and prevention of such infections is integral to the management of patients with HIV infection. Co-trimoxazole is a prophylactic treatment that has a wide range of action against common bacteria, parasites, fungi and yeasts. As part of a minimum care package, UNAIDS/ WHO recommends co-trimoxazole prophylaxis for HIVinfected adults with symptomatic disease (WHO stage II, III or IV), or asymptomatic individuals with CD4 counts ≤500 cells/μl, and for all HIV-positive pregnant women after the first trimester.1 Co-trimoxazole is also recommended for use in children with proven HIV infection and infants exposed to HIV (from 4 - 6 weeks of age until infection with HIV is ruled out).2 The object of this report is to summarise the effects of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis on morbidity and mortality among HIV-infected individuals

Fotografía y alteridades. A vueltas con los usos de la fotografía y el sentido de los otros

En este artículo queremos dar cuenta de algunos de los principales hallazgos de los encuentros que, en formo de jornadas y talleres, venimos realizando desde hace unos cinco años sobre pensar la fotografía y las alteridades. De esta manera, en un primer momento aclaramos lo que entendemos por alteridades para luego reflexionar sobre las prácticas y los usos de la fotografía en las ciencias sociales así como sobre las estrechas y complejas relaciones que estas prácticas y usos mantienen con la percepción y el análisis de los procesos de alterización y de las alteridades. Así mismo, postulamos que la fotografía puede constituir, además de un excelente instrumento de producción de información, un lenguaje diferente y complementario al del lenguaje oral y escrito en nuestra tarea científica de describir y comprender los sentidos de los otros en las sociedades contemporáneas, interrogándonos así sobre cuáles son las condiciones que harían posibles una fotoetnografía o una sociofotología. Abstract In this article we will present some of the main findings arising from seminars and workshops that we have been holding for about five years as a way of thinking about photography and alterity together. First we clarify the meaning of “alterity” and then we consider the practice and use of photography in the social sciences as well as the closely aligned and complex relations that these practices and uses have with the perception and analysis of the process of alterization and alteration. Accordingly, we propose that photography can be, in addition to an excellent tool for the production of information, a different language, and complementary of the oral and written language in our scientific task of describing and understanding the meaning of the other in contemporary societies.
