    Observation of Magnetic Supercooling of the Transition to the Vortex State

    We demonstrate that the transition from the high-field state to the vortex state in a nanomagnetic disk shows the magnetic equivalent of supercooling. This is evidence that this magnetic transition can be described in terms of a modified Landau first-order phase transition. To accomplish this we have measured the bulk magnetization of single magnetic disks using nanomechanical torsional resonator torque magnetometry.     Data driven optimal filtering for phase and frequency of noisy oscillations: application to vortex flowmetering

    A new method for extracting the phase of oscillations from noisy time series is proposed. To obtain the phase, the signal is filtered in such a way that the filter output has minimal relative variation in the amplitude (MIRVA) over all filters with complex-valued impulse response. The argument of the filter output yields the phase. Implementation of the algorithm and interpretation of the result are discussed. We argue that the phase obtained by the proposed method has a low susceptibility to measurement noise and a low rate of artificial phase slips. The method is applied for the detection and classification of mode locking in vortex flowmeters. A novel measure for the strength of mode locking is proposed.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    A theory led narrative review of one-to-one health interventions:the influence of attachment style and client-provider relationship on client adherence

    A theory-led narrative approach was used to unpack the complexities of the factors that enable successful client adherence following one-to-one health interventions. Understanding this could prepare the provider to anticipate different adherence behaviours by clients, allowing them to tailor their interventions to increase the likelihood of adherence. The review was done in two stages. A theoretical formulation was proposed to explore factors which influence the effectiveness of one-to-one interventions to result in client adherence. The second stage tested this theory using a narrative synthesis approach. Eleven studies across the health care arena were included in the synthesis and explored the interplay between client attachment style, client–provider interaction and client adherence with health interventions. It emerged that adherence results substantially because of the relationship that the client has with the provider, which is amplified or diminished by the client’s own attachment style. This occurs because the client’s attachment style shapes how they perceive and behave in relationships with the health-care providers, who become the ‘secure base’ from which the client accepts, assimilates and adheres with the recommended health intervention.     Three-axis torque investigation of interfacial exchange coupling in a NiFe/CoO bilayer micromagnetic disk

    Micrometer diameter bilayers of NiFe (permalloy, Py) and cobalt oxide (CoO) deposited on nanomechanical resonators were used to investigate exchange bias effects. The mechanical compliances of two resonator axes were enhanced by severing one torsion arm, resulting in a unique three-axis resonator that responds resonantly to torques generated by a three-axis RF field. Our technique permits simultaneous measurement of three orthogonal torque components. Measurements of the anisotropies associated with interfacial exchange coupling effects have been made. At cryogenic temperatures, observations of shifted linear hysteresis loops confirmed the presence of exchange bias from the Py/CoO interface. An in-plane rotating DC bias field was used to probe in-plane anisotropies through the out-of-plane torque. Training effects in the rotational hysteresis data were observed and showed that features due to interfacial coupling did not diminish irrespective of substantial training of the unidirectional anisotropy. The data from the rotational hysteresis loops were fit with parameters from a macrospin solution to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.     The C57BL/6J Mouse Strain Background Modifies the Effect of a Mutation in Bcl2l2

    Bcl2l2 encodes BCL-W, an antiapoptotic member of the BCL-2 family of proteins. Intercross of Bcl2l2 +/− mice on a mixed C57BL/6J, 129S5 background produces Bcl2l2 −/− animals with the expected frequency. In contrast, intercross of Bcl2l2 +/− mice on a congenic C57BL/6J background produces relatively few live-born Bcl2l2 −/− animals. Genetic modifiers alter the effect of a mutation. C57BL/6J mice (Mus musculus) have a mutant allele of nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (Nnt) that can act as a modifier. Loss of NNT decreases the concentration of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate within the mitochondrial matrix. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate is a cofactor for glutathione reductase, which regenerates reduced glutathione, an important antioxidant. Thus, loss of NNT activity is associated with increased mitochondrial oxidative damage and cellular stress. To determine whether loss of Bcl2l2 −/− mice on the C57BL/6J background was mediated by the Nnt mutation, we outcrossed Bcl2l2 congenic C57BL/6J (Nnt −/−) mice with the closely related C57BL/6JEiJ (Nnt +/+) strain to produce Bcl2l2 +/− ; Nnt +/+ and Bcl2l2 +/− ; Nnt −/− animals. Intercross of Bcl2l2 +/− ; Nnt +/+ mice produced Bcl2l2 −/− with the expected frequency, whereas intercross of Bcl2l2 +/− ; Nnt −/− animals did not. This finding indicates the C57BL/6J strain background, and possibly the Nnt mutation, modifies the Bcl2l2 mutant phenotype. This and previous reports highlight the importance of knowing the genetic composition of mouse strains used in research studies as well as the accurate reporting of mouse strains in the scientific literature
