An Efficient Algorithm for Enumerating Chordless Cycles and Chordless Paths

A chordless cycle (induced cycle) CC of a graph is a cycle without any chord, meaning that there is no edge outside the cycle connecting two vertices of the cycle. A chordless path is defined similarly. In this paper, we consider the problems of enumerating chordless cycles/paths of a given graph G=(V,E),G=(V,E), and propose algorithms taking O(E)O(|E|) time for each chordless cycle/path. In the existing studies, the problems had not been deeply studied in the theoretical computer science area, and no output polynomial time algorithm has been proposed. Our experiments showed that the computation time of our algorithms is constant per chordless cycle/path for non-dense random graphs and real-world graphs. They also show that the number of chordless cycles is much smaller than the number of cycles. We applied the algorithm to prediction of NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectra, and increased the accuracy of the prediction

A Note on Scalar Field Theory in AdS_3/CFT_2

    Get PDF
We consider a scalar field theory in AdS_{d+1}, and introduce a formalism on surfaces at equal values of the radial coordinate. In particular, we define the corresponding conjugate momentum. We compute the Noether currents for isometries in the bulk, and perform the asymptotic limit on the corresponding charges. We then introduce Poisson brackets at the border, and show that the asymptotic values of the bulk scalar field and the conjugate momentum transform as conformal fields of scaling dimensions \Delta_{-} and \Delta_{+}, respectively, where \Delta_{\pm} are the standard parameters giving the asymptotic behavior of the scalar field in AdS. Then we consider the case d=2, where we obtain two copies of the Virasoro algebra, with vanishing central charge at the classical level. An AdS_3/CFT_2 prescription, giving the commutators of the boundary CFT in terms of the Poisson brackets at the border, arises in a natural way. We find that the boundary CFT is similar to a generalized ghost system. We introduce two different ground states, and then compute the normal ordering constants and quantum central charges, which depend on the mass of the scalar field and the AdS radius. We discuss certain implications of the results.Comment: 24 pages. v2: added minor clarification. v3: added several comments and discussions, abstract sligthly changed. Version to be publishe

A note on string solutions in AdS_3

We systematically search for classical open string solutions in AdS_3 within the general class expressed by elliptic functions (i.e., the genus-one finite-gap solutions). By explicitly solving the reality and Virasoro conditions, we give a classification of the allowed solutions. When the elliptic modulus degenerates, we find a class of solutions with six null boundaries, among which two pairs are collinear. By adding the S^1 sector, we also find four-cusp solutions with null boundaries expressed by the elliptic functions.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure; (v2) added 1 figure and discussion on solutions with 6 null boundaries; (v3) corrected equation numbers; (v4) added comment

    Normative design using inductive learning

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose a use-case-driven iterative design methodology for normative frameworks, also called virtual institutions, which are used to govern open systems. Our computational model represents the normative framework as a logic program under answer set semantics (ASP). By means of an inductive logic programming approach, implemented using ASP, it is possible to synthesise new rules and revise the existing ones. The learning mechanism is guided by the designer who describes the desired properties of the framework through use cases, comprising (i) event traces that capture possible scenarios, and (ii) a state that describes the desired outcome. The learning process then proposes additional rules, or changes to current rules, to satisfy the constraints expressed in the use cases. Thus, the contribution of this paper is a process for the elaboration and revision of a normative framework by means of a semi-automatic and iterative process driven from specifications of (un)desirable behaviour. The process integrates a novel and general methodology for theory revision based on ASP.Comment: Theory and Practice of Logic Programming, 27th Int'l. Inherited electrophoretic variants detected in a Japanese population with two-dimensional gels of erythrocyte lysates

Genetic variation has been studied in erythrocyte lysates from 100 Japanese children and their parents by means of two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Fifty-five polypeptides selected without respect to variability were considered suitable for scoring. Genetic variation was encountered in 14 of these polypeptides. Family data show that the segregation of 13 variants is consistent with an autosomal codominant mode of inheritance; the remaining variant exhibits a sex-linked mode of inheritance. Of 8 presumably identical polypeptides found variable in Japanese and/or Caucasians, differences in the occurrence or allele frequencies of polymorphisms were recognized for four. Contrary to the experience of some investigators, the amount of variation and the ethnic differences we are encountering indicate that two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is a sensitive tool for the study of genetic events.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65555/1/j.1469-1809.1986.tb01753.x.pd

A ferrofluid based neural network: design of an analogue associative memory

We analyse an associative memory based on a ferrofluid, consisting of a system of magnetic nano-particles suspended in a carrier fluid of variable viscosity subject to patterns of magnetic fields from an array of input and output magnetic pads. The association relies on forming patterns in the ferrofluid during a trainingdphase, in which the magnetic dipoles are free to move and rotate to minimize the total energy of the system. Once equilibrated in energy for a given input-output magnetic field pattern-pair the particles are fully or partially immobilized by cooling the carrier liquid. Thus produced particle distributions control the memory states, which are read out magnetically using spin-valve sensors incorporated in the output pads. The actual memory consists of spin distributions that is dynamic in nature, realized only in response to the input patterns that the system has been trained for. Two training algorithms for storing multiple patterns are investigated. Using Monte Carlo simulations of the physical system we demonstrate that the device is capable of storing and recalling two sets of images, each with an accuracy approaching 100%.Comment: submitted to Neural Network
