This thesis investigates the work of Nersēs the Great, who was one of the most prominent ecclesiastical leaders of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the 4th century. In Armenian church history, Nersēs is esteemed as a founder of the philanthropic movement. There is, however, no consensus regarding the origins of Armenian philanthropy. Through an examination of late antique Armenian sources, this work will explore important similarities and some differences between the philanthropic institutions of Nersēs and those of Basil of Caesarea. This exploration suggests that Nersēs’ philanthropic movement was a part of a broad movement that began to emerge in Greek world prior to Eustathius or Nersēs. An introductory chapter examines the 4th century historical environment of Armenia Major, which allows us to appreciate how various political, religious and social challenges influenced the emergence of the philanthropic movement of Nersēs. The second chapter considers, first, the sources that tell us about the origins of Nersēs’s philanthropic movement and, second, it addresses the dating of the Council of Ašhtišhat. In the third chapter, I investigate the similarities and differences between the philanthropic institutions of Nersēs and the Basiliada. The fourth chapter considers social justice in Armenian and Basilian traditions of philanthropy. In the 5th chapter, I show how the sponsorship of philanthropy was organized in both traditions and that parallels exist between the two traditions in relation to their concern with tax relief for the poor. In the 6th chapter, I consider a few important questions concerning the possible relationship between Eustathius and Armenia. In the seventh chapter I question the standard view that the charitable agencies of Nersēs did not continue after his death because of the antichurch policy of the Armenian King Pap (369-375). My conclusion suggests that the observed parallels between the philanthropic movement of Nersēs and Basiliada enables us to hold that they both stem from a common tradition, that particularly the West could have served as a source of inspiration for the philanthropic movement of Nersēs

The Role of Stigma on Mental Health Service-Seeking Among Armenian-American Men

    Get PDF
This study examined the role of stigma on mental health service-seeking among Armenian-American men who self-identified as having lived through or currently are living with a mental health issue. This qualitative study utilized interpretive phenomenological analysis to ensure that the lived experiences of Armenian-American men are represented through their perspective. A total of six participants engaged in this study. All participants self-identified as male and as having experienced a mental health issue, have utilized mental health services at least once in their lifetime, resided in the San Francisco Bay Area, and as being of Armenian descent. Through exploring the lived experiences and reflections of participants in this study, several themes and sub-themes emerged. These themes included stigma, mental health treatment, gender views, and moving forward to decrease stigma. As expected, stigma emanating from the Armenian community was seen to be a deterrent to seeking mental health services. Furthermore, the role of felt stigma appeared to serve as a significant barrier. Negative views of self and cognitive distortions influenced participants’ decisions to pursue mental health services. This study found various factors, such as cultural beliefs and values, socio-economic status, a lack of understanding of mental health issues and resource availability as potential barriers for service-seeking behaviors amongst Armenian-American men

The Systematic Design and Implementation of a Training Program for Teaching Assistants

An increase has recently occurred in the number of programs which formally prepare teaching assistants (TAs) for their designated teaching responsibilities. These programs may also be seen as an investment in preparing the future professorate for their teaching roles. This paper describes how a program for the training of teaching assistants was conceptualized and implemented at McGill, a large research-oriented Canadian university. A review of the relevant literature is followed by a detailed description of the systematic approach to program development involving needs assessment, planning and implementation, and evaluation. The relationship between various levels of the University and the way in which these relationships have strengthened the TA training program are highlighted.Récemment, il y a eu une augmentation dans le nombre de programmes qui formellement préparent les chargés de cours (teaching assistants) pour les responsabilités pédagogiques qui leur sont désignées.

Hoarding and short-squeezing in times of crisis: Evidence from the Euro overnight money market

International audienceWe study at an individual level the prices that banks pay for liquidity, measured here by overnight rates charged for unsecured loans on the e-MID trading platform, which is an important and transparent money market for European banks. Using data from both before and within crisis sub-periods, we provide evidence that borrower's and lender's own liquidity status has a significant impact on overnight rates, both before and during the turmoil periods. We first review the literature focused on the role of liquidity risk in the recent interbank turmoil. We then implement an integrative LSDV estimation to assess the determinants of e-MID overnight rates. In these regressions, we put together measures of the three types of factors that have received theoretical and empirical support, namely, counterparty risk, liquidity factors and market imperfections. We find that even when counterparty risk and market imperfections are controlled for, banks with higher funding liquidity risk pay an interest rate premium. We show that this is probably explained by hoarding and short-squeezing behavior of liquidity-long banks. These phenomena disappeared when the ECB launched its full allotment policy in October 2008

Do Canadian and Japanese palliative care physicians perceive the concept of resilience differently?

Teaching about resilience is one of the biggest challenges in medical education. One of the problems of currently accepted definitions is that they attribute individualistic notions mainly originating in North American society, such as “endure ongoing hardship,” “thrive on challenges,” “be healthy,” and “be stronger.” In response to this situation, Tsuchiya et al (2017) proposed a description of a broader model of a resilient physician in healthcare that incorporates concepts of self-definition as described in both North American and the East Asian societies; that is, “a person’s capacity to be aware of the aspects of the self differently identified in each context, and to consciously value oneself and others in the context”. However, the concept is still theoretical, and more empirical understanding is needed. This presentation will examine the findings from our exploratory study on physician resilience using semi-structured interviews with 20 palliative care physicians (10 each in Canada and Japan) to answer the following questions:(1) Are there any differences in the way Canadian and Japanese palliative care physician perceive resilience? (2) What factors might affect the similarities or differences of their perceptions of resilience? (3) Are these findings consistent with Tsuchiya’s description? Following qualitative analysis using a grounded theory approach, a schematic representation of resilience in physicians will be offered, to inform a coherent educational program for resilient healthcare professionals.

Graduate student supervision policies and procedures: A case study of issues and factors affecting graduate study

This study was designed to identify salient issues in supervision across disciplines at a Canadian research university with a history of decentralized administration of graduate programs. Three sets of issues guided the inquiry: (a) the definition of supervision, (b) policies and procedures for supervision, and (c) the resources available for supervision. Although most departments reported having some form of policies and procedures, they did not tend to be explicitly stated or communicated. According to program directors, the two most important factors in the graduate supervision process were the supervisor's knowledge of the research field and his or her availability. There was considerable variability across faculties in the existence of policies and in the importance attached to different factors. Resources also varied greatly across disciplines. One conclusion of the study is that since the process of supervision is complex and occurs within a disciplinary context, much of the effort involved in enhancing the quality of graduate student supervision must be made at the department level. However, a comprehensive definition of graduate student supervision is needed to ensure that, where possible, there is common ground for graduate student supervision policy and practice.
