Massive stellar systems: observational challenges and perspectives in the E-ELT era

    Get PDF
We introduce the empirical framework concerning optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of crowded stellar fields. In particular, we address the impact that linear detectors and analytical PSF played in improving the accuracy and the precision of multi-band color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We focus our attention on recent findings based on deep NIR images collected with Adaptive Optics (AO) systems at the 8-10m class telescopes and discuss pros and cons of the different approaches. We also discuss the estimate of the absolute age of globular clusters using a well defined knee along the lower main sequence. We mention the role which the current AO-assisted instruments will have in addressing longstanding astrophysical problems of the Galactic center. Finally, we outline the role of first generation of E-ELT instruments upon photometry and spectroscopy of crowded stellar fields

Negative affect (NA) and chronic stress are separately associated with health imbalances, and the interaction between the two aspects remains unclear. Care of relatives with long-term pathologies could be a likely model in the study of this issue, as caregivers frequently report chronic stress and health complaints. The aim of this study is examine the role of NA on psychophysiological stress-induced response and health in schizophrenia caregivers. Method: Forty-one caregivers were distributed into two groups accordingly to their scores in NA. Thirteen non-caregivers were included as a control group. Participants were exposed to a repeated acute psychosocial stress while salivary cortisol, immunoglobulin A (IgA), and skin conductance level (SCL) were measured before, during, and after stress. Mood, state-anxiety, care conditions and perceived general health were also assessed. Results: Caregivers with higher NA reported negative perceptions, worse health, and greater decreases in cortisol and IgA response than caregivers with low NA and than non-caregivers. Conclusions: NA could reduce the capability to develop adaptive psychophysiological stress responses. From a preventive view, the evaluation of NA could be useful to detect and assist high-risk individuals in potentially chronically stressed population

Contemplating Mindfulness at Work: An Integrative Review

    Get PDF
Mindfulness research activity is surging within organizational science. Emerging evidence across multiple fields suggests that mindfulness is fundamentally connected to many aspects of workplace functioning, but this knowledge base has not been systematically integrated to date. This review coalesces the burgeoning body of mindfulness scholarship into a framework to guide mainstream management research investigating a broad range of constructs. The framework identifies how mindfulness influences attention, with downstream effects on functional domains of cognition, emotion, behavior, and physiology. Ultimately, these domains impact key workplace outcomes, including performance, relationships, and well-being. Consideration of the evidence on mindfulness at work stimulates important questions and challenges key assumptions within management science, generating an agenda for future research

Background and Aims: Randomized, controlled trials of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) excluded patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). We sought to explore long-term clinical outcomes. Methods and Results: In this single-center, observational study, events were collected from hospital records on patients with structural ACHD (sACHD) and adults with ischemic (ICM) or nonischemic (NICM) cardiomyopathy undergoing CRT. Patients with sACHD (n = 23, age: 41.6 ± 13.5 years [mean ± standard deviation]) and adults with ICM (n = 533) or NICM (n = 458) were followed-up for 4.1 years (median; interquartile range: 2.2-6.1). Total mortality was 5/23 (21.7%; 4.4 per 100 person-years) in sACHD, 221/533 (41.5%; 11.8 per 100 person-years) in ICM, and 154/458 (33.6%; 9.7 per 100 person-years) in NICM. In univariate analyses, total mortality in sACHD was lower than in ICM (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.38; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.15-0.91), but similar to NICM (HR: 0.48, 95% CI 0.20-1.16). Cardiac mortality in sACHD was similar to ICM (HR: 0.78, 95% CI 0.32-1.92) and NICM (HR: 1.12, 95% CI 0.45-2.78). Heart failure (HF) hospitalization rates were similar to ICM (HR: 0.44, 95% CI 0.11-1.77) and NICM (HR: 0.75, 95% CI 0.18-3.08). In multivariate analyses, no differences emerged in total mortality, cardiac mortality, or HF hospitalization between sACHD and NICM or ICM, after adjustment for age, sex, New York Heart Association class, diabetes, atrial rhythm, QRS duration, QRS morphology, systemic ventricular ejection fraction, and medical therapy. Conclusion: Total mortality, cardiac mortality, and HF hospitalization after CRT in patients with sACHD was similar to adults with ICM or NICM

Closed genome and comparative phylogenetic analysis of the clinical multidrug resistant Shigella sonnei strain 866

Shigella sonneiis responsible for the majority of shigellosis infections in the US with over 500,000 cases reported annually. Here, wepresent the complete genome of the clinical multidrug resistant (MDR) strain 866, which is highly susceptible to bacteriophageinfections. The strain has a circular chromosome of 4.85 Mb and carries a 113 kb MDR plasmid. This IncB/O/K/Z-type plasmid, termedp866, confers resistance to five different classes of antibiotics including ß-lactamase, sulfonamide, tetracycline, aminoglycoside, andtrimethoprim. Comparative analysis of the plasmid architecture and gene inventory revealed that p866 shares its plasmid backbonewith previously described IncB/O/K/Z-typeShigellaspp. andEscherichiacoliplasmids, but is differentiated by the insertion of antibioticresistance cassettes, which we found associated with mobile genetic elements such as Tn3, Tn7, and Tn10. A whole genome-derivedphylogenetic reconstruction showed the evolutionary relationships ofS. sonneistrain 866 and the four establishedShigellaspecies, highlighting the clonal nature ofS. sonnei

Internal attribution of outcome moderates the cortisol response to a cooperative task in women

    Get PDF

Among particulate matter composing paints, titanium dioxide (TiO2) forms about 20% of the final suspension. Although TiO2 is broadly used in many applications, TiO2 powders represent an established respiratory hazard for workers with long-term exposure. In 35 workers of a paints production plant (15 exposed and 20 not exposed), we assessed pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-10, IL-17), surfactant protein D (SP-D) and Krebs von den Lungen-6 glycoprotein (KL-6) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC). In urine samples, we measured 8-isoprostane (Isop) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) as biomarkers of oxidative stress, and Titanium (Ti-U) as a biomarker of exposure. Health status, habits and occupational history were recorded. Airborne respirable dusts and Ti were quantified. Particle number concentration and average diameter (nm) were detected by a NanoTracer™ monitoring device. Ti was measurable in filters collected at the respiratory breathing zone (0.11–0.44 µg/m3 8-h TWA). IL-1β and IL-10 values were significantly higher in exposed workers, whereas SP-D was significantly lower (p p 2 in paint production is associated with the subtle alterations of lung pathobiology. These findings suggest the need for an integrated approach relying on both personal exposure and biomarker assessment to improve the hazard characterisation in occupational settings
