    Vocabulary is part of language teaching and learning. Sufficient words usage ease students cope with academic assignments. This study tries to find out vocabulary level of freshman at English department State Polytechnic of Bengkalis. The method of the research is descriptive. Instruments used in gathered the data is set of vocabulary level test designed by Nation (1983) and developed by Schmitt, N., D. Schmitt, and C. Clapham. 2001. The population of the study is 16 freshman of Diploma program. The result of the test showed that most of the students are below 1000 vocabulary level. The finding revealed that the learners have limited vocabulary. It also brings two implications to the teaching. First, Lecturers should provide ekstra vocabulary training in lessons. Then, instruction language used should be adjusted between target language and mother tongue

    Developing an English Proficiency Test for Higher Education

    Universities worldwide have recognized the significance of assessing students' language abilities to ensure they can actively participate in academic discourse. However, many universities do not have institution-based English proficiency test yet. The aim of the research is to explore the significances of developing university-based English proficiency test, the essential steps involved in crafting it, and challenges in developing a robust institution's English proficiency test. The method used in this research is library research. The results underscore the critical role of an English proficiency test in ensuring academic excellence, promoting global communication, and preparing students for success in an increasingly interconnected world.  Developing a well-structured and reliable English proficiency assessment tool starts with a decision to provide a test, developing the test, and followed by those stages connected with test use. Nevertheless, defining test objective and ensuring test validity, choosing the right format, ensuring fairness and inclusivity, preparing substantial cost and resources, adapting for specific contexts are challenges in developing it. In sum, universities can develop a robust English proficiency test by having collaboration with language experts, assessment specialists, and educators, as well as adherence to established principles of language testing and assessment

    Effective English Language Teaching Strategy For Vocational Education

    English language teaching in vocational education is more challenging than in academic education. Variations of learners’ English backgrounds (low intake) and high demands of ESP for learners of vocational colleges aggravate the situations. Conventional teaching strategies such as lecturing and tutoring might not be sufficient to cope with these problems. Educators should utilize more effective way to improve teaching and learning in order to maximize students’ achievements. Various strategies have been used by previous researchers to solve these obstacles. Yet, Cooperative learning strategy is a promising solution to promote better English learning in vocational educations. Thus, this article tries to describe the use of a Cooperative Learning strategy in teaching English for vocational education students. The application of the strategy proved that the students could achieve better achievements in English through the strategy than conventional ones. The results revealed that the strategy is effective to use in vocational educations

    An investigation ofcomposition performanceisimportant matter of contention toprobethat one may achievefurthercompelling and authenticending. Paragraph composition performance is one of the concerns.Thetarget of the contemporaryanalysisistoinspectthe extent to which the students’ paragraph composition performance. Therefore, survey study was conceived to achieve the purpose. The third semester students of English Study Program of FKIP – UNISI Tembilahan were determined as the shareholders. They were requiredto composetwo kinds ofparagraph; process paragraph and comparison/contrast paragraph. There are five evaluation criterions; format, punctuation and mechanics, contents, oganization, and sentence structure. Dealing the results ofdata analysis,itdisclosed that theirparagraph composition performance on each compositionelements was diverse. It could be justified from the datawhich sixparticipants (27.3%) worked outin the admirablegrade, nineof them (40.9%) were recognized in competent level, and sevenparticipants (31.8%) could achieve in sufficientcategory. As the final comment, it could be determined that their paragraph compositionperformance was in the sufficient to admirable level. Nevertheless, to gain better endings, more practice isbrought to their mind

    A STUDY ON THE ABILITY OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF BUSSINESS ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM BENGKALIS STATE POLYTECHNIC IN SUMMARIZING ENGLISH TEXT

    Abstract: The ability of summarizing is essential to be acquired by students. In writing, students often summarize when quoting opinions and writing papers. This descriptive research is aimed at finding students’ level of ability in summarizing an English text as well as the highest and the lowest aspects of writing. Population of the research was second year students of Business English Study Program Bengkalis State Polytechnic consisting of 48 students. Technique of sampling used was random sampling technique. The chosen samples were 24 students of the population. Data and information were gathered by a writing test. The students were asked to write a good summary of a text given. The findings revealed that the ability level of students in summarizing text was in fairly good. While the second highest was in good category. This finding was based on the highest percentage of students’ score in summarizing of a text. In addition, the findings also explain that the highest aspect of writing was on fluency while the lowest percentage was on organization.     Penerapan prinsip good governance dalam pelayanan publik pada bidang kesehatan dapat terwujud apabila pelayanan di Puskesmas Betungan dilaksanakan secara transparan, responsif, efektif dan efisien waktu. (Dwiyanto, 2015) Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan penerapan prinsip good governance dalam pelayanan publik di Puskesmas Betungan Kota Bengkulu, dengan menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif, informan dalam penelitian ini adalah petugas pelayanan, bidan, perawat dan komunitas. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa penerapan good governance dalam pelayanan publik di Puskesmas Betungan Kota Bengkulu sudah cukup maksimal, terlihat prinsip transparansi, responsivitas, prinsip efektifitas dan efisiensi dalam pelayanan kesehatan di Betungan. Puskesmas telah dilaksanakan cukup optimal seperti ketersediaan papan informasi pelayanan, ketersediaan standar pelayanan minimalis, dan adanya monitoring dan evaluasi yang dilakukan oleh Puskesmas untuk meningkatkan pelayanan kesehatan, yang menjadi permasalahan adalah masyarakat pengguna jasa belum mampu mengakses informasi secara luas (berbasis elektronik), belum tersedianya layanan pengaduan online, tidak tersedianya kotak saran dan layanan yang dirasa masyarakat belum mendapatkan pelayanan prima

    Mastering English vocabulary is essential in this competitive world. By mastering English vocabulary, students can learn English and comunicate with people. However, there are still many of the students cannot learn English Vocabulary well. They still face difficulties for example, in learning simple daily words. This situation, make students feel bored and lose their interest in learning English. Therefore, the use of learning media are needed to attract these learners attention and interest to learn English in more effective and interesting way. Besides, media can be used to learn English anywhere and anytime outside the school. Related to this research, the main purpose of this project is to make Smart Towels which can be used as an alternative self-learning medium in learning English Vocabulary. This project resulted Smart Towels consists of various themes suitable for Elementary School Students. These towels are modified from ordinary towels that is modified to make it look more interesting. These media can be used in and outside classes during learning-teaching process or spare time.     Persepsi Risiko Bencana Pada Mahasiswa di Kota Padang Ditinjau dari Pengalaman dan Variabel Demografis

    Padang merupakan salah satu kota dengan ancaman bencana gempabumi dan tsunami. Kondisi tersebut dapat mempengaruhi persepsi risiko bencana penduduknya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi risiko bencana gempabumi dan tsunami pada mahasiswa ditinjau dari pengalaman menghadapi bencana dan variabel demografis (gender, angkatan, rumpun pendidikan, dan jarak tempat tinggal). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Subjek terdiri dari 213 mahasiswa Universitas Negeri Padang dari 8 fakultas yang berbeda yang dipilih dengan teknik cluster sampling. Skala yang digunakan adalah skala persepsi risiko bencana yang disusun berdasarkan model semantik diferensial. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa: (1) subjek memiliki tingkat persepsi risiko bencana yang tinggi; (2) tidak ada perbedaan persepsi risiko antara subjek yang pernah mengalami bencana dan belum pernah; (3) ada perbedaan persepsi risiko ditinjau dari variabel demografis meliputi gender, angkatan, dan rumpun pendidikan, sedangkan jarak tempat tinggal tidak ditemukan adanya perbedaan. Implikasi untuk memahami temuan dari penelitian ini didiskusikan dalam pembahasan

    This research study aims to see the success of the "Garugiwa In Line" innovation in population administration services. The invention, which adopts the name of the GARUGIWA bird or Arwah Bird, which is an endemic bird that only lives in the Kelimutu mountains in Ende Regency, has recorded various performance achievements in population administration services (Adminduk) for the people of Ende Regency. This research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach. It examines the research focus by measuring government innovation strategies using indicators of integrated services, utilization of cooperation, citizen involvement, and utilization of communication and information technology. The results showed that from the percentage achievement of national service indicators, Disdukcapil Kab. Ende can increase the percentage achievement of service indicators every year. This describes that aspects of local wisdom can be "energy" that contributes to the performance of public services
