    Magnetic interactions: A multimedia interactive tutorial

    Magnetic interactions, besides their intrinsic interest, constitute a didactical topic suitable to contextualize the fundamental physical concept of field. Moreover, the magnetic properties of matter, in particular ferromagnetism, are usually poorly dealt in italian high schools. By employing the Java programming language, we have developed an interactive tutorial allowing learners to explore the ways in which two GeomagTM magnets interact with a ferromagnetic sphere. The simulation (whose quantitative aspects are based on a magnetostatics transposition of the electrostatic’s method of images) interactively shows the sphere’s magnetization pattern as a magnetic dipole approaches to it. The interaction force between magnet and ferromagnetic object is also shown. The proposed tutorial is usefully employed to explain the so-called “Geomag paradoxes” (Defrancesco et al. 2007)

    Experimental activities have a crucial role in physics education, because they represent one of the methods peculiar to discipline and facilitate the connection between experience and interpretation. They acquire particular significance if related and linked to every day experience. In this context we propose a reasoned sequence of experiences based on easy found and low-cost materials, suitable to shed light on essential concepts connected to a variety of physics fields. All illustrated four didactic proposals are carried out by using tinplate jars and each one drives at an integrated balancing between formal and informal education by scheduling various teaching methodologies in order to engage students having different learning styles

    Sick building syndrome-like symptoms in emergency prefabricated accommodation.

    The present study investigated the sources of discomfort and the symptoms reported by earthquake victims residing in temporary emergency prefabricated accommodation (prefab). The investigation was carried out by means of a questionnaire. 203 prefab occupants and 132 inhabitants of houses, who were chosen as reference population, replied in winter and 233 prefab occupants and 154 inhabitants of houses replied in summer. In both seasons more people living in prefabs identified dry air, stuffy air, stale air, dust, dampness, uncomfortable temperature and bad odours as sources of discomfort. They also complained of general symptoms (headache, irritability, insomnia, difficulty in concentration) and irritative symptoms of the eyes, upper and lower airways and skin. Multiple regression analysis identified the type of accommodation as the variable that most influenced the onset of general, ocular, upper and lower airway symptoms. Intrinsic characteristics of the prefabs (being constructed with synthetic materials, combustion sources, poor ventilation and insulation) and psychosocial factors e. losing their home, could have contributed to the onset of symptoms

    Looking for seismites in the Fucino basin: preliminary results from a combined geological geophysical approach.

    We present a combined geological-geophysical study on the lacustrine sequence of the Fucino Plain (central Italy). New acquired data on liquefaction features and the recovery of a seismite in the lacustrine sequence are shown. Our preliminary results suggest the occurrence of three seismic events in the last ca. 45 kyr. Moreover, a first attempt to find out the source deposit responsible of the widespread liquefaction phenomena has been performed by means of shallow engine boreholes and ERT profiles

    MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDY OF SUBSIDENCE AND SINKHOLE OCCURRENCES IN THE ACQUE ALBULE BASIN (ROMA, ITALY)

    Abstract We present the results of a combined analysis of remote sensing and geophysical‐geotechnical data carried out in the Acque Albule Basin, a sinkhole prone area located close to the city of Roma, where a wide travertine wedge is present. We carried out geophysical measurements and borehole drillings over two test areas to image the subsoil where paroxysmal surficial dynamics occur. One site is marked by subsidence occurring at least since the early 2000s, whereas the other site hosts the "La Regina" and "Colonnelle" sinkhole lakes, which discharge sulfur‐carbonated waters. The stability of these two sites threatens highway, railway, and airport facilities, and this study helps to assess the geological hazard. For example, InSAR and LiDAR data helped define wide scale subsidence over the last 20 years and previously undetected small‐scale morphologies. Geophysical measurements of the latter revealed shallow and deep dissolution affecting the travertine and driving surficial paroxysmal events. Both study sites were found to lie inside a large depression located at the junction between Jurassic carbonate and Plio‐Pleistocene units in association with paleo karst morphologies in the travertine deposits and affected by the present‐past spillage of sulfurous waters. Given these elements, multidisciplinary geophysical observations are crucial for assessing and mitigating the geological risk and guiding land use planning and management

    O trabalho foi conduzido em uma propriedade de atividade leiteirana município de Xambrê, região Noroeste do Paraná, no período de março de 2011 a fevereiro de 2012 com o objetivo de avaliar a produtividade e a composição botânica do capim Tifton 85 com e sem irrigação sob doses de nitrogênio. As parcelas experimentais foram implantadas com delineamento de blocos ao acaso com e sem irrigação e as subparcelas por meio de quatro doses de nitrogênio: 0, 20, 40 e 60 kg ha-1 ciclo de pastejo-1, com quatro repetições. A produtividade em matéria seca (MS) foi maior sob irrigaçãocrescendo de forma linear à adubação nitrogenada. Na dose de 60 kg N ha-1 foram obtidas produtividades iguais a 39279 e 27826 kg MS ha-1, com e sem irrigação, respectivamente. A relação folha colmo não foi afetada pela irrigação. A média geral do percentual de material morto com e sem irrigação, foi igual a 13 e 17%, respectivamente194317323The study was conducted on a dairy farm in the municipality of Xambre, Northwest region of Parana, in the period from March 2011 to February 2012 to evaluate the yield and botanical composition of Tifton 85 with and without irrigation under nitrogen doses. The experimental plots were implanted in completely randomized blocks with and without irrigation and subplots through four nitrogen levels: 0, 20, 40 and 60 kg ha(-1) per grazing cycle, with four replications. The yield in dry matter (DM) was higher under irrigation, responding linearly to increasing nitrogen fertilization. At a dose of 60 kg N ha(-1) yields of 39279 and 27826 kg DM ha(-1) were obtained, with and without irrigation, respectively. The leaf stem ratio was not affected by irrigation.     Imaging the three-dimensional architecture of the Middle Aterno basin (2009 L’Aquila earthquake, Central Italy) using ground TDEM and seismic noise surveys: preliminary results

    We present preliminary results from a multidisciplinary geophysical approach applied to the imaging of the threedimensional architecture of the Middle Aterno basin, close to the epicentral area of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake (central Italy). We collected several time domain electromagnetic soundings (TDEM) coupled with seismic noise measurements focusing on the characterization of the bedrock/infill interface. Our preliminary results agree with existing geophysical data collected in the area, and show that the southeastern portion of the basin is characterized by a deepening of the Mesozoic-Tertiary bedrock down to a depth of more than 450 m. We found that a joint use of electromagnetic and seismic methods significantly contributes in obtaining new insights on the 3D geometry of the Middle Aterno basin.
