A case of osteochondritis dissecans at an unusual localization is presented. The lesion affected both patellae, and was externally located. Surgical treatment was indicated by means of bone perforations without removal of the fragment. An excellent result was observed at 4 years follow-up. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time this method has been applied for the described location
Diversity of lactic acid bacteria of the bioethanol process
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bacteria may compete with yeast for nutrients during bioethanol production process, potentially causing economic losses. This is the first study aiming at the quantification and identification of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) present in the bioethanol industrial processes in different distilleries of Brazil.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 489 LAB isolates were obtained from four distilleries in 2007 and 2008. The abundance of LAB in the fermentation tanks varied between 6.0 Ă 105 and 8.9 Ă 108 CFUs/mL. Crude sugar cane juice contained 7.4 Ă 107 to 6.0 Ă 108 LAB CFUs. Most of the LAB isolates belonged to the genus <it>Lactobacillus </it>according to rRNA operon enzyme restriction profiles. A variety of <it>Lactobacillus </it>species occurred throughout the bioethanol process, but the most frequently found species towards the end of the harvest season were <it>L. fermentum </it>and <it>L. vini</it>. The different rep-PCR patterns indicate the co-occurrence of distinct populations of the species <it>L. fermentum </it>and <it>L. vini</it>, suggesting a great intraspecific diversity. Representative isolates of both species had the ability to grow in medium containing up to 10% ethanol, suggesting selection of ethanol tolerant bacteria throughout the process.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study served as a first survey of the LAB diversity in the bioethanol process in Brazil. The abundance and diversity of LAB suggest that they have a significant impact in the bioethanol process.</p
Global disparities in surgeonsâ workloads, academic engagement and rest periods: the on-calL shIft fOr geNEral SurgeonS (LIONESS) study
: The workload of general surgeons is multifaceted, encompassing not only surgical procedures but also a myriad of other responsibilities. From April to May 2023, we conducted a CHERRIES-compliant internet-based survey analyzing clinical practice, academic engagement, and post-on-call rest. The questionnaire featured six sections with 35 questions. Statistical analysis used Chi-square tests, ANOVA, and logistic regression (SPSSŸ v. 28). The survey received a total of 1.046 responses (65.4%). Over 78.0% of responders came from Europe, 65.1% came from a general surgery unit; 92.8% of European and 87.5% of North American respondents were involved in research, compared to 71.7% in Africa. Europe led in publishing research studies (6.6 ± 8.6 yearly). Teaching involvement was high in North America (100%) and Africa (91.7%). Surgeons reported an average of 6.7 ± 4.9 on-call shifts per month, with European and North American surgeons experiencing 6.5 ± 4.9 and 7.8 ± 4.1 on-calls monthly, respectively. African surgeons had the highest on-call frequency (8.7 ± 6.1). Post-on-call, only 35.1% of respondents received a day off. Europeans were most likely (40%) to have a day off, while African surgeons were least likely (6.7%). On the adjusted multivariable analysis HDI (Human Development Index) (aOR 1.993) hospital capacity > 400 beds (aOR 2.423), working in a specialty surgery unit (aOR 2.087), and making the on-call in-house (aOR 5.446), significantly predicted the likelihood of having a day off after an on-call shift. Our study revealed critical insights into the disparities in workload, access to research, and professional opportunities for surgeons across different continents, underscored by the HDI
Mediating factors of Statistics Anxiety in university students: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Despite the emphasis on statistical learning for many university courses, to date have been no syntheses examining the impact of statistics anxiety on university students. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to address this by being the first to examine the factors impacting statistical anxiety in university students specifically. We aim to focus on the predictive factors of statistics anxiety as classified by Owuegbuzie and Wilson (2003) and later Cui and colleagues (2019) separating academic, behavioural, self-perceptual and sociodemographic variables in the analyses
Author's Original Manuscript
This is a systematic review and meta-analysis concerning statistics anxiety in university students. Following our pre-registration, we searched on databases such as PsycINFO, PubMed, Scielo, and Web of Science. After the exclusions, 40 studies were selected for systematic review and 17 for a series of six meta-analyses. Results confirmed the multidimensionality of statistics anxiety in university students. The impact of sociodemographic factors remains uncertain since they are underexplored. Overall, learning strategies, procrastination, self-efficacy, and self-awareness were strong predictors of SA.
