Squalius malacitanus is an endemic cyprinid fish from the south of the Iberian Peninsula. This species is endangered due to habitat destruction, damming and low water availability.

Squalius castellanus is an endemic cyprinid fish from the Iberian Peninsula, with a distribution area restricted to the River Tagus (Gallo sub-basin). This species is critically endangered mainly due to pollution and fluctuations of the water regime.

Cobitis vettonica is an endemic cobitid fish from the Iberian Peninsula with a distribution area restricted to the River Águeda (Douro river basin) and the Alagón and Eljas rivers (Tagus river basin). This species is endangered due to pollution, habitat destruction by sediment removal and damming, and introduction of exotic species.

Genetic variability of Candida albicans SAP8 propeptide in isolates from different types of infection

The secreted aspartic proteases (Saps) are among the most studied virulence determinants in Candida albicans. These proteins are translated as pre-pro-enzymes consisting of a signal sequence followed by a propeptide and the mature enzyme. The propeptides of secreted proteinases are important for the correct processing, folding/secretion of the mature enzyme. In this study, the DNA sequences of C. albicans Saps were screened and a microsatellite was identified in SAP8 propeptide region. The genetic variability of the repetitive region of Sap8 propeptide was determined in 108 C. albicans independent strains isolated from different types of infection: oral infection (OI), oral commensal (OC), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), and bloodstream infections (BSI). Nine different propeptides for Sap8 processing were identified whose frequencies varied with the type of infection. OC strains presented the highest gene diversity while OI isolated the lowest. The contribution of the Saps to mucosal and systemic infections has been demonstrated and recently Sap8 has been implicated in the cleavage of a signalling glycoprotein that leads to Cek1-MAPK pathway activation. This work is the first to identify a variable microsatellite in the propeptide of a secreted aspartic protease and brings new insights into the variability of Sap8.This research was supported by FEDER funds through the Operational Programme COMPETE and national funds through Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), in the scope of project PEst-OE/BIA/UI4050/2014.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

UGROŽENE VRSTE RIBA U SVIJETU: Achondrostoma salmantinum, Doadrio i Elvira, 2007 (Cyprinidae)

Achondrostoma salmantinum is a small, endemic cyprinid fish from the Iberian Peninsula. It occurs in some tributaries of the Douro river basin in the Salamanca province (western Spain) and is currently endangered due to receding water levels resulting from extensive agriculture, construction of dams and weirs and water transfers.

Patterns of Parental Reactions to Their Children’s Negative Emotions: A Cluster Analysis with a Clinical Sample

Parents’ emotion socialization practices are an important source of influence in the development of children’s emotional competencies This study examined parental reactions to child negative emotions in a clinical sample using a cluster analysis approach and explored the associations between clusters of parents’ reactions and children’s and parents’ adjustment. The sample comprised 80 parents of Portuguese children (aged 3–13 years) attending a child and adolescent psychiatry unit. Measures to assess parental reactions to children’s negative emotions, parents’ psychopathological symptoms, parents’ emotion dysregulation, and children’s adjustment were administered to parents. Model-based cluster analysis resulted in three clusters: low unsupportive, high supportive, and inconsistent reactions clusters. These clusters differed significantly in terms of parents’ psychopathological symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and children’s adjustment. A pattern characterized by high supportive reactions to the child’s emotions was associated with higher levels of children’s adjustment. On the other hand, an inconsistent reactions pattern was associated with the worst indicators of children’s adjustment and parental emotion dysregulation. These results suggest the importance of supporting parents of children with emotional and behavioural problems so that they can be more responsive to their children’s emotional manifestations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
