NobreResearch Group in Human Sexuality (Sexlab), Centre for Psychology at University of Porto, Faculty of Psychology and EducationSciences – University of Porto, Porto, PortugalIntroduction & Objectives: Sexual psychophysiologyis a scientific field which has vastly contributed to theunderstanding of the human sexual response. Genitalresponse measurements have been consistently assessedin laboratory studies across the world, wherein themost common measures are vaginal photoplethysmog-raphy for women and penile circumferential responsefor men. These instruments require direct genital con-tact or insertion, and thus hygiene procedures havebeen carefully practised allowing the reuse of the devi-ces while minimizing the chance of transmitting infec-tions. Current guidelines suggest high-leveldisinfection for such procedures, and researchers com-monly use glutaraldehyde (e.g. Cidex Plus) and ortho-phthalaldehyde (e.g. Cidex OPA) formulations.Because such disinfectants have not shown clear evi-dence of killing Human Papillomavirus (HPV), recom-mendations include a pre-wash with sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) based on studies reporting SDS to killboth HPV and HIV. However, recent studies onmicrobiology have suggested new methodologies onhow to deal with HPV, and new disinfection protocolshave been introduced in the medical field (e.g. low-temperature gas plasma sterilizers). The present workintends to discuss current sterilization protocols inlight of the new findings regarding HPV resistanceand raise awareness about the possibility of adoptingnew guidelines that allow for more effective use anddisinfection/sterilization of genital devices in Sexologylaboratories.Conclusion & Recommendations: Vaginal photo-plethysmographs as internal probes are classified assemi-critical devices and, hence, their cleaning proce-dures should take into account HPV susceptibility todisinfection. Gas plasma technology (e.g. STERRAD),which already has been utilized in some SexLabs inEurope, is discussed as an optimized solution.Advantages regarding time consumption and resourcesare also addressed. Moreover, neuroti-cism has been proposed as a vulnerability factor forA550 ABSTRACTSsexual dysfunction. This relationship between neuroti-cism and sexual functioning may be, at least in part,explained by attentional mechanisms. This investiga-tion aimed to explore the neurophysiological correlatesof attentional processes during the perception of sexualand non-sexual images in individuals with high andlow neuroticism.Method(s) & Sample: 58 participants were selectedon the basis of their score in the neuroticism scale of theNEO-PI-R, 30 scoring low and 28 scoring high in theneuroticism scale. Event-related potentials (ERPs) wererecorded during a modified oddball paradigm in whichthree different categories of stimuli (sexual; non-sexualpositive; non-sexual negative) varying in the arousal level(high and low arousal) were presented.Results: Results indicated neuroticism to impactboth early and late neurophysiological components ofattentional processing of sexual stimuli. Female partici-pants with high neuroticism showed a delayed P1 peakduring the perception of highly arousing sexual images(i.e. sexually explicit) when compared with low arous-ing sexual images (i.e. romantic). Moreover, partici-pants with high neuroticism, both male and female,showed enhanced P3 amplitudes for highly arousingimages (with and without sexual content), when com-pared with participants with low neuroticism.Conclusion & Recommendations: These resultshelp to clarify the relationship between neuroticismand sexual response, namely by showing this personal-ity trait to impact both early/automatic and later/con-trolled phases of information processing of sexualstimuli. Varicocele is recognized as theleading cause of male infertility and is present inapproximately 15% to 20% of male population. Thisstudy is to investigate the pathophysiology of varicoceleand efficacy of MKS in infertility and testosterone of ratvaricocele model.Method(s) & Sample: Four groups were included:control (CTR), MKS group (mks 200mg/kg/day),Varicocele group (VC), VC +MKS 200 group (mks200mg/kg/day). The rats were administered 200mg/kgMKS or vehicle once daily for 28 days. Serum wasassayed for hormone concentrations. Tissues were sub-jected to semen analysis, histopathological changes,interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, oxidative stressmarkers, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markersand apoptosis markers by western blot.Results: The sperm motility and counts, spermato-genic cell density, testosterone, testicular SOD, catalase,GPx improved significantly in the VC +MKS 200group compared with the VC group. Serum LH andFSH level, testicular interleukin- 6, TNF-α, ROS/RNS,MDA level, and apoptotic index decreased significantlyin the VC +MKS 200 groups compared with the VCgroup.
