Determination of Acrylamide in Portuguese Bread by UPLC-MS/MS: metrological and chemometric tools
Acrylamide (AA) is known for its potential health hazards and it is present in processed potatoes, coffee, and bread. Wheat is still the most important cereal for bread making, however, the interest in its substitution by other grains is growing due to the consumer demand for novels and healthy foods, like oat and rye flour. The aim of this study was to analyze the AA content of confectioned bread in fifty-four different pastries and make an association of acrylamide contents and the place of production to identify the quality of the flour used. There was a wide variability in AA levels among different breads and within different bread varieties. The median of AA values was 787 μg/kg for whole grain bread, 783 μg/kg for oat bread and 253 μg/kg in rye bread.
With the cluster analysis, it was possible to conclude that besides the factors like baking temperature-time and fermentation time which affects AA formation in bread products, several other parameters such as the formulation, flour quality and the varieties of processing techniques, among others, play a crucial role in the AA formation.MISAGE project (LISBOA-01-0145-FEDER-024172). SÍNDROME DO ENVELHECIMENTO PRECOCE BUCAL: UMA REVISÃO BIBLIOGRÁFICA
The Premature Oral Aging Syndrome (POAS) is a major challenge in dentistry, mainly due to its multifactorial clinical characteristics that are responsible for its enormous complexity, requiring a multidisciplinary approach. Some of the etiological agents can be classified into: acid diet, psychiatric disorders, gastrointestinal diseases and sleep disorders. The clinical characteristics of the lesions are associated with the etiological factors present and with the stage of the lesion. The objective of this present study was to carry out a bibliographic review about the Premature Oral Aging Syndrome, its diagnosis, clinical manifestations, prevention and treatment. The literature review was carried out with searches in books and in the databases Pubmed, Scielo, BVS, REVodonto and other scientific annals, using the keywords: premature aging, dental wear and dental erosion. It is concluded that SEPB is the clinical manifestation of accelerated aging of the oral cavity and stomatognathic system, presenting a state of clinical non-normality of oral structures, with characteristics incompatible with the physiological (chronological) age of the individual, caused by systemic diseases of different origins, influence of new habits and/or lifestyle changes. The Expression of NTAL and Its Protein Interactors Is Associated With Clinical Outcomes in Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Non–T cell activation linker (NTAL) membrane protein depletion from lipid rafts by alkylphospholipids or downregulation by shRNA knockdown decreases cell viability through regulation of the Akt/PI3K pathway in mantle cell lymphoma and acute promyelocytic leukemia cells. Here, we confirmed that the knockdown of NTAL in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines was associated with decreased cell proliferation and survival. Similarly, a xenograft model using AML cells transduced with NTAL–shRNA and transplanted into immunodeficient mice led to a 1.8-fold decrease in tumor burden. Using immunoprecipitation, LC–MS/MS analysis, and label-free protein quantification, we identified interactors of NTAL in two AML cell lines. By evaluating the gene expression signatures of the NTAL protein interactors using the PREdiction of Clinical Outcomes from Genomic Profiles database, we found that 12 NTAL interactors could predict overall survival in AML, in at least two independent cohorts. In addition, patients with AML exhibiting a high expression of NTAL and its interactors were associated with a leukemic granulocyte–macrophage progenitor–like state. Taken together, our data provide evidence that NTAL and its protein interactors are relevant to AML cell proliferation and survival and represent potential therapeutic targets for granulocyte–macrophage progenitor–like leukemias

New records and detailed distribution and abundance of selected arthropod species collected between 1999 and 2011 in Azorean native forests
[Background] In this contribution we present detailed distribution and abundance data for arthropod species identified during the BALA ¿ Biodiversity of Arthropods from the Laurisilva of the Azores (1999-2004) and BALA2 projects (2010-2011) from 18 native forest fragments in seven of the nine Azorean islands (all excluding Graciosa and Corvo islands, which have no native forest left).[New information] Of the total 286 species identified, 81% were captured between 1999 and 2000, a period during which only 39% of all the samples were collected. On average, arthropod richness for each island increased by 10% during the time frame of these projects. The classes Arachnida, Chilopoda and Diplopoda represent the most remarkable cases of new island records, with more than 30% of the records being novelties. This study stresses the need to expand the approaches applied in these projects to other habitats in the Azores, and more importantly to other less surveyed taxonomic groups (e.g. Diptera and Hymenoptera). These steps are fundamental for getting a more accurate assessment of biodiversity in the archipelago.AMCS was supported by a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship (IEF 331623 ‘COMMSTRUCT’) and by a Juan de la Cierva Fellowship (IJCI-2014-19502) funded by the Spanish ‘Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad’.Peer Reviewe
Building a Portuguese Coalition for Biodiversity Genomics
The diverse physiography of the Portuguese land and marine territory, spanning from continental Europe to the Atlantic archipelagos, has made it an important repository of biodiversity throughout the Pleistocene glacial cycles, leading to a remarkable diversity of species and ecosystems. This rich biodiversity is under threat from anthropogenic drivers, such as climate change, invasive species, land use changes, overexploitation or pathogen (re)emergence. The inventory, characterization and study of biodiversity at inter- and intra-specific levels using genomics is crucial to promote its preservation and recovery by informing biodiversity conservation policies, management measures and research. The participation of researchers from Portuguese institutions in the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) initiative, and its pilot effort to generate reference genomes for European biodiversity, has reinforced the establishment of Biogenome Portugal. This nascent institutional network will connect the national community of researchers in genomics. Here, we describe the Portuguese contribution to ERGA’s pilot effort, which will generate high-quality reference genomes of six species from Portugal that are endemic, iconic and/or endangered, and include plants, insects and vertebrates (fish, birds and mammals) from mainland Portugal or the Azores islands. In addition, we outline the objectives of Biogenome Portugal, which aims to (i) promote scientific collaboration, (ii) contribute to advanced training, (iii) stimulate the participation of institutions and researchers based in Portugal in international biodiversity genomics initiatives, and (iv) contribute to the transfer of knowledge to stakeholders and engaging the public to preserve biodiversity. This initiative will strengthen biodiversity genomics research in Portugal and fuel the genomic inventory of Portuguese eukaryotic species. Such efforts will be critical to the conservation of the country’s rich biodiversity and will contribute to ERGA’s goal of generating reference genomes for European species.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
