    A rotating cylinder in an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter background

    A family of exact solutions is presented which represents a rigidly rotating cylinder of dust in a background with a negative cosmological constant. The interior of the infinite cylinder is described by the Godel solution. An exact solution for the exterior solution is found which depends both on the rotation of the interior and on its radius. For values of these parameters less than a certain limit, the exterior solution is shown to be locally isomorphic to the Linet-Tian solution. For values larger than another limit, it is shown that the exterior solution extends into a region which contains closed timelike curves. At large distances from the source, the space-time is shown to be asymptotic locally to anti-de Sitter space.Comment: To appear in Classical and Quantum Gravit

    South and South-East Asian coastal fisheries: their status and directions for improved management: conference synopsis and recommendations

    As a step to address the problems of coastal fisheries in Asia, the WorldFish Center joined forces with fisheries agencies from eight developing Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam) and the Asian Development Bank, to implement a project entitled “Sustainable Management of Coastal Fish Stocks in Asia” (also known as the “TrawlBase” project). The project was implemented between 1998 and 2001. The main achievements of this partnership were: (a) Development of a database called “Fisheries Resource Information System and Tools” (FiRST), which contains trawl research survey data and socioeconomic information for selected fisheries, and facilitates its analysis; (b) Evaluation of the extent of resource decline and over-fishing, both biological and economic, in the region; (c) Identification of the measures needed to manage coastal fisheries in the participating countries, resulting in draft strategies and action plans; and (d) Strengthening of national capacity in coastal fisheries assessment, planning and management

    Tidal controls on trace gas dynamics in a seagrass meadow of the Ria Formosa lagoon (southern Portugal)

    Coastal zones are important source regions for a variety of trace gases, including halocarbons and sulfur-bearing species. While salt marshes, macroalgae and phyto-plankton communities have been intensively studied, little is known about trace gas fluxes in seagrass meadows. Here we report results of a newly developed dynamic flux chamber system that can be deployed in intertidal areas over full tidal cycles allowing for highly time-resolved measurements. The fluxes of CO2, methane (CH4) and a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) showed a complex dynamic mediated by tide and light. In contrast to most previous studies, our data indicate significantly enhanced fluxes during tidal immersion relative to periods of air exposure. Short emission peaks occurred with onset of the feeder current at the sampling site. We suggest an overall strong effect of advective transport processes to explain the elevated fluxes during tidal immersion. Many emission estimates from tidally influenced coastal areas still rely on measurements carried out during low tide only. Hence, our results may have significant implications for budgeting trace gases in coastal areas.     Ground-state configurations in ferromagnetic nanotori

    Magnetization ground states are studied in toroidal nanomagnets. The energetics associated to the ferromagnetic, vortex and onion-like configurations are explicitly computed. The analysis reveals that the vortex appears to be the most prominent of such states, minimizing total energy in every torus with internal radius r10nmr\gtrsim10\,{\rm nm} (for Permalloy). For r10nmr\lesssim10\,{\rm nm} the vortex remains the most favorable pattern whenever R/ex1.5R/\ell_{ex}\gtrsim1.5 (RR is the torus external radius and ex\ell_{ex} is the exchange length), being substituted by the ferromagnetic state whenever R/ex1.5R/\ell_{ex}\lesssim1.5.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 apendices, Revtex forma

    Nonlinear viscosity and velocity distribution function in a simple longitudinal flow

    A compressible flow characterized by a velocity field ux(x,t)=ax/(1+at)u_x(x,t)=ax/(1+at) is analyzed by means of the Boltzmann equation and the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic model. The sign of the control parameter (the longitudinal deformation rate aa) distinguishes between an expansion (a>0a>0) and a condensation (a<0a<0) phenomenon. The temperature is a decreasing function of time in the former case, while it is an increasing function in the latter. The non-Newtonian behavior of the gas is described by a dimensionless nonlinear viscosity η(a)\eta^*(a^*), that depends on the dimensionless longitudinal rate aa^*. The Chapman-Enskog expansion of η\eta^* in powers of aa^* is seen to be only asymptotic (except in the case of Maxwell molecules). The velocity distribution function is also studied. At any value of aa^*, it exhibits an algebraic high-velocity tail that is responsible for the divergence of velocity moments. For sufficiently negative aa^*, moments of degree four and higher may diverge, while for positive aa^* the divergence occurs in moments of degree equal to or larger than eight.Comment: 18 pages (Revtex), including 5 figures (eps).     The first radial velocity measurements of a microlensing event: no evidence for the predicted binary

    The gravitational microlensing technique allows the discovery of exoplanets around stars distributed in the disk of the galaxy towards the bulge. However, the alignment of two stars that led to the discovery is unique over the timescale of a human life and cannot be re-observed. Moreover, the target host is often very faint and located in a crowded region. These difficulties hamper and often make impossible the follow-up of the target and study of its possible companions. Gould et al. (2013) predicted the radial-velocity curve of a binary system, OGLE-2011-BLG-0417, discovered and characterised from a microlensing event by Shin et al. (2012). We used the UVES spectrograph mounted at the VLT, ESO to derive precise radial-velocity measurements of OGLE-2011-BLG-0417. To gather high-precision on faint targets of microlensing events, we proposed to use the source star as a reference to measure the lens radial velocities. We obtained ten radial velocities on the putative V=18 lens with a dispersion of ~100 m/s, spread over one year. Our measurements do not confirm the microlensing prediction for this binary system. The most likely scenario is that the assumed V=18 mag lens is actually a blend and not the primary lens that is 2 magnitude fainter. Further observations and analyses are needed to understand the microlensing observation and infer on the nature and characteristics of the lens itself.Comment: submitted on 3rd June 2015 to A&ALette

    Aging to non-Newtonian hydrodynamics in a granular gas

    The evolution to the steady state of a granular gas subject to simple shear flow is analyzed by means of computer simulations. It is found that, regardless of its initial preparation, the system reaches (after a transient period lasting a few collisions per particle) a non-Newtonian (unsteady) hydrodynamic regime, even at strong dissipation and for states where the time scale associated with inelastic cooling is shorter than the one associated with the irreversible fluxes.
