Metastable neon collisions: anisotropy and scattering length
In this paper we investigate the effective scattering length of
spin-polarized Ne*. Due to its anisotropic electrostatic interaction, its
scattering length is determined by five interaction potentials instead of one,
even in the spin-polarized case, a unique property among the Bose condensed
species and candidates. Because the interaction potentials of Ne* are not known
accurately enough to predict the value of the scattering length, we investigate
the behavior of as a function of the five phase integrals corresponding to
the five interaction potentials. We find that the scattering length has five
resonances instead of only one and cannot be described by a simple gas-kinetic
approach or the DIS approximation. However, the probability for finding a
positive or large value of the scattering length is not enhanced compared to
the single potential case. The complex behavior of is studied by comparing
a quantum mechanical five-channel numerical calculation to simpler two-channel
models. We find that the induced dipole-dipole interaction is responsible for
coupling between the different |\Omega> states, resulting in an inhomogeneous
shift of the resonance positions and widths in the quantum mechanical
calculation as compared to the DIS approach. The dependence of the resonance
positions and widths on the input potentials turns out to be rather
straightforward. The existence of two bosonic isotopes of Ne* enables us to
choose the isotope with the most favorable scattering length for efficient
evaporative cooling towards the Bose-Einstein Condensation transition, greatly
enhancing the feasibility to reach this transition.Comment: 13pages, 8 eps figures, analytical model in section V has been

Nonlinear atom optics and bright gap soliton generation in finite optical lattices
We theoretically investigate the transmission dynamics of coherent matter
wave pulses across finite optical lattices in both the linear and the nonlinear
regimes. The shape and the intensity of the transmitted pulse are found to
strongly depend on the parameters of the incident pulse, in particular its
velocity and density: a clear physical picture for the main features observed
in the numerical simulations is given in terms of the atomic band dispersion in
the periodic potential of the optical lattice. Signatures of nonlinear effects
due the atom-atom interaction are discussed in detail, such as atom optical
limiting and atom optical bistability. For positive scattering lengths, matter
waves propagating close to the top of the valence band are shown to be subject
to modulational instability. A new scheme for the experimental generation of
narrow bright gap solitons from a wide Bose-Einstein condensate is proposed:
the modulational instability is seeded in a controlled way starting from the
strongly modulated density profile of a standing matter wave and the solitonic
nature of the generated pulses is checked from their shape and their
collisional properties
Motion of influential players can support cooperation in Prisoner's Dilemma
We study a spatial Prisoner's dilemma game with two types (A and B) of
players located on a square lattice. Players following either cooperator or
defector strategies play Prisoner's Dilemma games with their 24 nearest
neighbors. The players are allowed to adopt one of their neighbor's strategy
with a probability dependent on the payoff difference and type of the given
neighbor. Players A and B have different efficiency in the transfer of their
own strategy therefore the strategy adoption probability is reduced by a
multiplicative factor (w < 1) from the players of type B. We report that the
motion of the influential payers (type A) can improve remarkably the
maintenance of cooperation even for their low densities.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Modified f(G) gravity models with curvature-matter coupling
A modified f(G) gravity model with coupling between matter and geometry is
proposed, which is described by the product of the Lagrange density of the
matter and an arbitrary function of the Gauss-Bonnet term. The field equations
and the equations of motion corresponding to this model show the
non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor, the presence of an extra-force
acting on test particles and the non-geodesic motion. Moreover, the energy
conditions and the stability criterion at de Sitter point in the modified f(G)
gravity models with curvature-matter coupling are derived, which can degenerate
to the well-known energy conditions in general relativity. Furthermore, in
order to get some insight on the meaning of these energy conditions, we apply
them to the specific models of f(G) gravity and the corresponding constraints
on the models are given. In addition, the conditions and the candidate for
late-time cosmic accelerated expansion in the modified f(G) gravity are studied
by means of conditions of power-law expansion and the equation of state of
matter less than -1/ 3 .Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

On the statistical significance of the conductance quantization
Recent experiments on atomic-scale metallic contacts have shown that the
quantization of the conductance appears clearly only after the average of the
experimental results. Motivated by these results we have analyzed a simplified
model system in which a narrow neck is randomly coupled to wide ideal leads,
both in absence and presence of time reversal invariance. Based on Random
Matrix Theory we study analytically the probability distribution for the
conductance of such system. As the width of the leads increases the
distribution for the conductance becomes sharply peaked close to an integer
multiple of the quantum of conductance. Our results suggest a possible
statistical origin of conductance quantization in atomic-scale metallic
contacts.Comment: 4 pages, Tex and 3 figures. To be published in PR
A functional genomics approach reveals suggestive quantitative trait loci associated with combined TLR4 and BCP crystal-induced inflammation and osteoarthritis
Objective: Basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals can activate the NLRP3 inflammasome and are potentially involved in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). In order to elucidate relevant inflammatory mechanisms in OA, we used a functional genomics approach to assess genetic variation influencing BCP crystal-induced cytokine production. Method: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from healthy volunteers who were previously genotyped and stimulated with BCP crystals and/or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) after which cytokines release was assessed. Cytokine quantitative trait locus (cQTL) mapping was performed. For in vitro validation of the cQTL located in anoctamin 3 (ANO3), PBMCs were incubated with Tamoxifen and Benzbromarone prior to stimulation. Additionally, we performed co-localisation analysis of our top cQTLs with the most recent OA meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Results: We observed that BCP crystals and LPS synergistically induce IL-1β in human PBMCs. cQTL analysis revealed several suggestive loci influencing cytokine release upon stimulation, among which are quantitative trait locus annotated to ANO3 and GLIS3. As functional validation, anoctamin inhibitors reduced IL-1β release in PBMCs after stimulation. Co-localisation analysis showed that the GLIS3 locus was shared between LPS/BCP crystal-induced IL-1β and genetic association with Knee OA. Conclusions: We identified and functionally validated a new locus, ANO3, associated with LPS/BCP crystal-induced inflammation in PBMCs. Moreover, the cQTL in the GLIS3 locus co-localises with the previously found locus associated with Knee OA, suggesting that this Knee OA locus might be explained through an inflammatory mechanism. These results form a basis for further exploration of inflammatory mechanisms in OA.</p
