    Concurrent economic and environmental impacts of food consumption: are low emissions diets affordable?

    Sustainability of food consumption concerns both environmental and economic issues. In fact, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization defines as sustainable diets those that are protective and respectful of ecosystems, culturally acceptable, economically affordable, besides ensuring an adequate and healthy nutrition.In this paper, a systematic methodology to plan menus complying with nutritional and health issues, close to current eating habits, affordable and with low greenhouse gas emissions is presented. The methodology relies on a multi-objective optimization model with binary variables. The objectives, that is the greenhouse gas emissions needed to serve the menu and its price, are conflicting and therefore a trade-off has to be established by means of the set of Pareto solutions. Any such a solution delivers a menu in term of the recipes composing each daily meal. The application of the presented methodology to the case of cycle menus for nursing homes is investigated. The case study shows that the menu's environmental impact is generally in inverse proportion to its price. Nevertheless, it is possible to obtain a menu with a significantly reduced environmental impact at an affordable extra cost. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Changes in antioxidant defence system in durum wheat under hyperosmotic stress: A concise overview

    Durum wheat is one of the most commonly cultivated species in the world and represents a key commodity for many areas worldwide, as its grain is used for production of many foods, such as pasta, bread, couscous, and bourghul. Durum wheat grain has a relevant role in the human diet, providing carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, fibres, vitamins, and minerals, as well as highly valued bioactive compounds contributing to a healthy diet. Durum wheat is largely cultivated in the Mediterranean basin, where it is mainly grown under rain-fed conditions, thus currently undergoing drought stress, as well as soil salinity, which can hamper yield potential and influence the qualitative characteristics of grain. When plants suffer drought and/or salinity stress, a condition known as hyperosmotic stress is established at cellular level. This leads to the accumulation of ROS thus generating in turn an oxidative stress condition, which can ultimately result in the impairment of cellular integrity and functionality. To counteract oxidative damage due to excessive ROS production under stress, plants have evolved a complex array of both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant mechanisms, working jointly and synergically for maintenance of ROS homeostasis. Enhancement of antioxidant defence system has been demonstrated as an adaptive mechanism associated to an increased tolerance to hyperosmotic stress. In the light of these considerations, this review provides a concise overview on recent advancements regarding the role of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle and the main antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidases) in durum wheat response to drought and salt stresses that are expected to become more and more frequent due to the ongoing climate changes

    Influence of drought and salt stress on durum wheat grain quality and composition: A review

    Durum wheat is a staple crop for the Mediterranean diet because of its adaptability to environmental pressure and for its large use in cereal-based food products, such as pasta and bread, as a source of calories and proteins. Durum wheat whole grains are also highly valued for their peculiar amount of dietary fiber and minerals, as well as bioactive compounds of particular interest for their putative health-beneficial properties, including polyphenols, carotenoids, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and phytosterols. In Mediterranean environments, durum wheat is mostly grown under rainfed conditions, where the crop often experiences environmental stresses, especially water deficit and soil salinity that may induce a hyperosmotic stress. In particular, changes in C and N accumulation due to these abiotic conditions, during grain filling, can influence starch and storage protein amount and composition in durum wheat caryopsis, thus influencing yield and quality traits. Recent advancements regarding the influence of water deficit and salinity stress on durum wheat are critically discussed.     Patient-specific image-based computer simulation for theprediction of valve morphology and calcium displacement after TAVI with the Medtronic CoreValve and the Edwards SAPIEN valve

    AIMS: Our aim was to validate patient-specific software integrating baseline anatomy and biomechanical properties of both the aortic root and valve for the prediction of valve morphology and aortic leaflet calcium displacement after TAVI. METHODS AND RESULTS: Finite element computer modelling was performed in 39 patients treated with a Medtronic CoreValve System (MCS; n=33) or an Edwards SAPIEN XT (ESV; n=6). Quantitative axial frame morphology at inflow (MCS, ESV) and nadir, coaptation and commissures (MCS) was compared between multislice computed tomography (MSCT) post TAVI and a computer model as well as displacement of the aortic leaflet calcifications, quantified by the distance between the coronary ostium and the closest calcium nodule. Bland-Altman analysis revealed a strong correlation between the observed (MSCT) and predicted frame dimensions, although small differences were detected for, e.g., Dmin at the inflow (mean±SD MSCT vs. MODEL: 21.6±2.4 mm vs. 22.0±2.4 mm; difference±SD: -0.4±1.3 mm, p<0.05) and Dmax (25.6±2.7 mm vs. 26.2±2.7 mm; difference±SD: -0.6±1.0 mm, p<0.01). The observed and predicted calcium displacements were highly correlated for the left and right coronary ostia (R2=0.67 and R2=0.71, respectively p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Dedicated software allows accurate prediction of frame morphology and calcium displacement after valve implantation, which may help to improve outcome

    Bleeding jejunal varices and portal thrombosis in a splenectomized patient with hereditary spherocytosis

    Bleeding from varices located in the small bowel is a very uncommon finding; nonetheless, such events accompany with a high mortality rate (1– 4). Moreover, early diagnosis of jejunal or ileal varices cannot usually be accomplished with standard diagnostic tools (ie, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy). Most reports in the literature relate to subjects with liver cirrhosis, often with hepatocarcinoma; in unusual anatomical situations, varices may develop beyond the ligament of Treitz in adjunct to the far more common location in the esophageal and gastric wall. Thrombosis of the portal vein is a common feature in such conditions. Portal thrombosis has also been described in association with overt or latent myeloproliferative diseases (5); its occurrence in nonneoplastic hematological conditions in subjects with normal liver function is quite uncommon. This report describes the observation of jejunal varices, with repeated episodes of “melena of unknown origin,” some of which quite severe, as their clinical presentation in a patient with portal thrombosis and with otherwise absolutely normal liver function, who had undergone splenectomy for hereditary spherocytosis in early adolescence

    Cavity-Enhanced Two-Photon Interference using Remote Quantum Dot Sources

    Quantum dots in cavities have been shown to be very bright sources of indistinguishable single photons. Yet the quantum interference between two bright quantum dot sources, a critical step for photon based quantum computation, has never been investigated. Here we report on such a measurement, taking advantage of a deterministic fabrication of the devices. We show that cavity quantum electrodynamics can efficiently improve the quantum interference between remote quantum dot sources: poorly indistinguishable photons can still interfere with good contrast with high quality photons emitted by a source in the strong Purcell regime. Our measurements and calculations show that cavity quantum electrodynamics is a powerful tool for interconnecting several devices.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures (Supp. Mat. attached

    Omission of postoperative radiation after breast conserving surgery: A progressive paradigm shift towards precision medicine

    Radiation therapy is a standard therapeutic option in the post-operative setting for early breast cancer patients after breast conserving surgery, providing a substantial benefit in reducing the risk of local relapse with a consequent survival gain. Nevertheless, the reduction in the burden related to treatment is becoming crucial in modern oncology for both local and systemic therapies and investigational efforts are being put forward by radiations oncologists to identify a subset of women at very low risk to be potentially omitted from post-operative irradiation after breast conservation. Clinical factors, classical pathological parameters and new predictive scores derived from gene expression and next generation sequencing techniques are being integrated in the quest toward a reliable low-risk profile for breast cancer patients.
