Many ecological terms are very difficult to define, or to apply to some groups of organisms. In the case of fungi, it is unclear how to speak of individuals, populations and species. Relying on morphological characters often gives ambiguous results. However, in recent years new techniques have been developed, techniques that provide us with robust tools, helpful in recognizing specific groups in nature. DeltaImpactFinder: Assessing Semantic Merge Conflicts with Dependency Analysis
In software development, version control systems (VCS) provide branching and
merging support tools. Such tools are popular among developers to concurrently
change a code-base in separate lines and reconcile their changes automatically
afterwards. However, two changes that are correct independently can introduce
bugs when merged together. We call semantic merge conflicts this kind of bugs.
Change impact analysis (CIA) aims at estimating the effects of a change in a
codebase. In this paper, we propose to detect semantic merge conflicts using
CIA. On a merge, DELTAIMPACTFINDER analyzes and compares the impact of a change
in its origin and destination branches. We call the difference between these
two impacts the delta-impact. If the delta-impact is empty, then there is no
indicator of a semantic merge conflict and the merge can continue
automatically. Otherwise, the delta-impact contains what are the sources of

Automated Component Testing of Evolutionary Software: An Industry Example
We present a summary of a problem analysis examining the challenges of introducing automated component black-box testing for an evolutionary grown software system. We outline the system and illustrate the challenges associated with testing. To explore to what extent black-box testing is feasible under a set of given conditions, we developed a prototype test automation framework. We describe the lessons learned in the process
Ratings Fetishism
The obsession with increasing the reputational rankings of American colleges and universities more detrimentally impacts race-based admissions policies than does Supreme Court doctrine. It is no secret that many schools inflate, misleadingly report, or falsify records in order to pander to rankings systems like U.S. News and World Report (“U.S. News”). These systems weigh a school’s mean standardized test scores (SAT and/or ACT) heavily as one of the factors for assigning a rank. Thus, the incentive among schools playing the ratings game is to admit students with the highest SAT scores. But, if one agrees with the data that underrepresented minorities as a group perform less well than their non-minority counterparts, it is, sadly, an understandable reality that schools focusing on gaming the U.S. News system are disinclined to admit underrepresented minority students. Consequently, ratings fetishism, an unreasonable obsession with high national rankings, is ruining diversity on our college campuses. I do not make these observations casually. There are countless examples of colleges and universities manipulating the data, or even worse, knowingly deceiving U.S. News in an effort to game the system
