A Model for the Design and Development of a Science and Technology Park in Developing Countries

    Get PDF
This paper presents an appropriate model for Science and Technology Parks (STPs) with a view to helping policy makers and STP managers implement and manage STPs. The authors reorganize and prioritize the Cabral-Dahab Science Park Management Paradigm. We identify three critical groups of actors (determinants, reactors and executors) and develop four sub-models from different trajectories of the groups of actors. We place more emphasis on the “determinants” as the most important actors in the establishment and management of STP. A critical evaluation of the sub-models reveals that the sub-model in which government, industry and university/research institutes are all jointly involved in decisive policy direction is the most appropriate for the developing country. The paper concludes that economies in transition should see STPs as having a distinctive organizational structure as a result of its myriads of collaborations and partnerships.Enterprise Development; Science and Technology Park; Model; Developing countries; Cabral-Dahab Paradigm; Determinants; Management

Eco-innovation and openness: Mapping the growth trajectories and the knowledge structure of open eco-innovation

    Get PDF
Open innovation runs contrary to the individualistic mentality of traditional corporate R&D implementation while embracing external cooperation in a complex world. Our main motivation for the study is to assess and characterize knowledge structure that represents radical transformation toward accelerating co-development of sustainable innovations. Our review points to the role of the open eco-innovation research landscape as an emerging research domain of potential contributions to sustainable development. Specifically, in this systematic analysis, we apply exploratory, bibliometric, and network visualization techniques to characterize the available knowledge in the field. We trace the growth trajectory of this emerging literature and map the knowledge base of the open eco-innovation (OE) research field. We conceptualised four phases of research domain development and recognised that OE is at the acceleration phase. We emphasized that a synthetic knowledge base is one of the basic ingredients of an open eco-innovation model in addition to analytic and symbolic knowledge bases. Finally, we highlighted what might seem to be budding theoretical perspectives underlining open eco-innovation

What Drives Innovation?: Inferences from an Industry-Wide Survey in Nigeria

    Get PDF
This chapter seeks to make some contributions to the literature on firm-level innovation in Africa by attempting to identify the significant factors that explain the capability of firms in Nigeria to innovate using the results of an industry-wide study. We focused on the product and process innovation activities of firms between 2003 and 2006 and found differences in the factors that drive them at the firm level. Our results further show that interactions matter more than most innovation-related variables and that the most important actors that influence a firm’s innovation efforts are its customers and suppliers. We conclude that product and process innovations are not mutually exclusive and that a major key to successful innovation is how and with whom a firm collaborates. The implication of this for firms and policy makers is that an effectively wired innovation system where all stakeholders are active is critical for firm-level innovation capability.innovation; drivers; manufacturing industry; Nigeria; determinants

INTERACTION EFFECTS OF SEASONS AND FARMING PRACTICES ON CORRELATION AND PATH ANALYSIS OF YIELD OF CUCUMBER (Cucumis sativus L.)

Association among yield characters is a pre-requisite for rapid crop improvement. A study was conducted to determine the effect of seasons and stake on correlation and path effects of cucumber yield traits. The experiment comprised of 2 seasons (wet and dry), 2 practices (staked and unstaked), six cucumber varieties replicated three times in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Planting distance was 75×75 cm. Insect pests, weeds, and fungi were controlled as recommended. Data collected were subjected to correlation and path effect analysis. In the dry season, the two practices revealed highly significant genotypic correlation (P<0.05) between fruit yield and vine length (rg= 1.20 and 1.07) and phenotypic (rp=0.69 and 0.74). With days to flowering, fruit yield displayed highly significant genotypic (rg=-1.14 and -1.03) and phenotypic correlation (rg=-0.74 and -0.76). In the wet season, the two practices revealed highly significant positive genotypic (rg=0.95 and 0.84) and phenotypic correlation (rg=0.84 and 0.71) between fruit yield and fruit length. Path analysis showed that high yield was achieved in the dry season through the maximum effect of fruit girth 0.34 and 1.15 in the two practices and shorter days to flowering -0.39. In the wet season, maximum fruit yield was obtained through fruit length (5.86 and 0.28) in both practices, in addition to less fruit girth (-6.76) and short days to flowering (-0.67).  In selection for high yields, the characters; vine length; fruit girth, fruit length and days to flowering can be utilized

An Approach to Study Melanoma Invasion and Crosstalk with Lymphatic Endothelial Cell Spheroids in 3D Using Immunofluorescence

Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture has allowed a deeper understanding of complex pathological and physiological processes, overcoming some of the limitations of 2D cell culture on plastic and avoiding the costs and ethical issues related to experiments involving animals. Here we describe a protocol to embed single melanoma cells alone or together with primary human lymphatic endothelial cells in a 3D crosslinked matrix, to investigate the invasion and molecular crosstalk between these two cell types, respectively. After fixation and staining with antibodies and fluorescent conjugates, phenotypic changes in both cell types can be specifically analyzed by confocal microscopy.Peer reviewe

Verification of Aerosols Loading Over Kano: A Theoretical Estimation via Mathematical Rudiments

    Get PDF
The danger of aerosols loading is dangerous to human as well as the atmosphere. The estimation of the aerosol loading can be very difficult in any location in West Africa because of its proximity to the influence of the north-east winds from the Sahara desert. An established analytical and statistical approach was used to estimate the aerosol loading over Kano. The maximum aerosol retention over Kano is 31.28%. The atmospheric constant which also describes the aerosols loading over Kano was found to be 0.708 and 0.8984. This means that Kano may be facing high thermal discomfort as well as spread of disease if not checked

Since its inception photography has become on indispensable part of human life. There are lpt of beautiful momentshas successfully captured by this photograph activity. Capturing human activities whereher located and freeze in a photpgraphic word made this event veri interesting to dol a photograph is able to express our fellings, human relationships to show the beauty of divine creation. Photography techniques there are rules contained in the art of photography it self. Learning by techniques of photography and often practice, we able understand the aesthetics of a photography to draw a great picture and interesting. In addition, we will be trained to convey a message through media photograph to everyone

Optimizing the Efficiency of Measuring Instruments in Ouagadougou- Burkina Faso

At the moment, AERONET or AMMA database shows a large volume of data loss. With only about 47% data set available to the scientist, it is evident that accurate nowcast or forecast cannot be guaranteed. The calibration constants of most radiosonde or weather stations are not compatible with the atmospheric conditions of the West African climate. A dispersion model was developed to incorporate salient mathematical representations like a Unified number. The Unified number was derived to describe the turbulence of the aerosols transport in the frictional layer of the lower atmosphere. Fourteen years data set from Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) was tested using the dispersion model. A yearly estimation of the atmospheric constants over Ouagadougou using the model was obtained with about 87.5% accuracy. It further revealed that the average atmospheric constant for Ouagadougou-Niger is a_1 = 0.626, a_2 = 0.7999 and the tuning constants is n_1 = 0.09835 and n_2 = 0.266. Also, the yearly atmospheric constants affirmed the lower atmosphere of Ouagadougou is very dynamic. Hence, it is recommended that radiosonde and weather station manufacturers should constantly review the atmospheric constant over a geographical location to enable about eighty percent data retrieva
