Britishers in Two Worlds: Maltese Immigrants in Detroit and Toronto, 1919-1960

This dissertation looks at the immigration of Maltese laborers and their families to North America, chiefly Detroit and Toronto, between 1919 and 1960. While the Maltese migration followed similar patterns to other Southern European Catholic or skilled laborers in general, it is different in both their timing and colonial association. Most migrants came to North America in the late 19th and early 20th century, but the Maltese migration occurs largely after World War I and extends through the 1960s---the exact time frame of immigration restrictions imposed by both the governments of the United States and Canada. How the Maltese immigrants were able to skirt these legal restrictions comes down to their imperial standing as part of the British Empire and the skilled trades that many migrants brought with them. Therefore, this dissertation attempts to be both a comparative study of immigration policy and foreign policy between the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, as well as a transnational study of a migrant group that spans not just the transatlantic world but also the North American border

Guns in the Sky: Nevada\u27s Firearm Laws, 1 October, and Next Steps

With incidences of high-profile mass shootings as well as daily gun violence continuing to rise throughout the United States, Nevada residents cannot help but wonder what the state is doing to stop and to prevent future incidents. Nevada has historically had permissive gun laws, being part of the “Wild West,” but in modern days, particularly since the 1 October shooting, Nevada legislators have enacted more gun laws. Additionally, judges and justices in Nevada courts have had to interpret new and old gun laws in novel ways, due to living in the modern era where gun violence seems to be the norm rather than the exception. This paper examines firearms legislation in Nevada historically, in the modern era and as a result of 1 October. We then examine one case in-depth, Parsons v. Colt’s, which arose from the 1 October shooting, and is currently active in the United States District Court, District of Nevada. We then examine further the three Certified Questions from Parsons currently certified to the Nevada Supreme Court and provide recommendations for rulings on the questions

Analysis of the structural characteristics of the station catchment area in Japan

This paper analyses the structural characteristics of station catchment areas in Japan. For the case study, the authors selected a corridor through which three railway companies have parallel operations. The station catchment area is calculated for each mode of transportation. The relationships between the size of the station catchment area and the station type and interval are analysed. The major findings match the authors’ predictions: 1) the station catchment areas for each transportation mode differ in size. In descending order of size, these are car, bus, two-wheels, and walking; 2) the larger the station interval, the larger the station catchment area; 3) stations at which express trains stop tend to have larger station catchment areas. [ES] El General Choi Hong Hi ha sido durante mucho tiempo una figura controvertida en la República de Corea (ROK; Corea del Sur), a pesar de su enorme influencia en el taekwondo. La “Conference for the 100th Anniversary of Choi Hong Hi: Taekwon-Do and Life; How to View Choi Hong Hi” se celebró el 28 de noviembre de 2018 en la Korea National Sport University. El presente informe sobre dicha conferencia tiene el propósito de difundir los hallazgos de los conferenciantesa una audiencia más amplia y establecer nuevas líneas de debate académico sobre el taekwondo de la Federación Internacional de Taekwon-Do(ITF). Esta conferencia también sacó a la luz algunos problemas existentes en la literatura sobre el taekwondo; a saber, que la literatura de la ITF está muy oscurecida debido a la investigación existente sobre su contraparte olímpica. This report on that conference intends to disseminate the speakers’ findings to a wider audience and establish new directions for academic discussions on International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) Taekwon-Do. This conference also illuminated some problems with Taekwondo literature; namely that ITF literature is greatly overshadowed by research on its Olympic counterpart. Additionally, it seems that the only ROK Taekwondo governing body interested in reestablishing General Choi’s legacy is the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation. Nevertheless, even though he was a taboo topic in the ROK a decade ago, the political climate in the ROK has changed and General Choi’s legacy is re-emerging slowly.[PT] Apesar da sua enorme influência no taekwondo, o General Choi Hong Hi foi durante muito tempo uma figura controversa na República da Coreia (ROK; Coreia do Sul). The research which entitled “An Analysis of Jargon Used in Speech Community in Online Game Dota 2” focuses on analysis types of word-formation and functions of jargon. This research used qualitative research and applied total sampling technique in which all jargons (22 jargons) found in Dota 2 were analyzed. The data is all jargons taken in conversation produced by players of Dota 2 in October, 2016 (SEA server). To collect the data, I observed fourteen games for two weeks and downloaded them. To answer the research questions, I used Yule‟s theory of wordformation and Holmes‟ theory of two functional scales completed by Halliday‟s theory of context analysis. The result of this research shows that there are 5 of 10 types of word-formation; borrowing (4 jargons), clipping (6 jargons), acronym (9 jargons), backformation (1 jargon) and derivation (1 jargon). One jargon is classified into numeronym which is out of Yule‟s classification. There are 14 jargons belong to referential function (64%) while 8 jargons belong to affective function (36%). Acronym was the most common type that formed jargon in Dota 2 while most jargons (64%) were categorized into referential function. The possible further research can be conducted by analyzing jargons in other servers; such as India, Japan, Australia, US West, US East, South Africa, Russia, Europe East, Europe West or South America
