    Get PDF
Background: Intertrochanteric fracture is a relatively common and serious medical issue in geriatric trauma result in serious health problems and decrease health related quality of life. Faster time-to-union is important for early return to daily activities and reduction of complications. Teriparatide has been shown to accelerate fracture-healing. The purpose of the present prospective, randomized, controlled study was to evaluate the effect of teriparatide on the course of intertrochanteric fracture-healing.Methods: Forty patients of intertrochanteric fractures who underwent surgical intervention between June 2016 and May 2017 were enrolled in this prospective study and followed for minimum of six months. Group A included patients who received only calcium supplementation; patients in Group B received teriparatide along with calcium supplementation postoperatively. Results: The mean time to fracture healing was between 8-12 weeks for the treatment group, compared with 12-16 weeks for the control group. There was also significant effectiveness with regards to Parker and Palmer mobility score at 6 months. Conclusions: Postoperative use of teriparatide for 6 months appears to be an effective adjunct therapy in the treatment of patients with intertrochanteric fractures. However, because of the limited power of the study a large-scale cohort study is still required for determining the efficacy of teriparatide

Study of altered platelet morphology with changes in glycaemic status

Background: Diabetes is a pandemic causing very high morbidity and mortality due to its complications which are a result of micro and macro angiopathy. Platelets play a key role in the vascular complications. These complications are attributed to platelet activation which can be recognised by an increase in platelet volume indices (PVI) including mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW). Platelet indices can be potentially useful surrogate markers for the early diagnosis of thromboembolic and cardiovascular complications in diabetes. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted for 2 years with total 930 subjects. The patients were segregated in 03 groups on basis of HbA1C as (a) Diabetic, (b) Non-Diabetic and (c) FG. Samples for HbA1C and platelet indices were collected using EDTA (ethylene diamine tetracetic acid) as anticoagulant and were processed on autoanalysers. Results: The study revealed a stepwise increase in the PVI from non-diabetics to IFG to diabetics. MPV and PDW were increased in the IFG cases as compared to the non-diabetic and were markedly increased in the diabetic patients. MPV and PDW of diabetics, IFG and non-diabetics were 17.60±2.04, 11.76±0.73, 9.93±0.64 and 19.17±1.48, 15.49±0.67, 10.59±0.67 respectively with a significant p value 0.00. Significant positive correlation between PVI with glycaemic levels and duration of diabetes across the groups (MPV-HbA1c r = 0.951; PDW-HbA1c r = 0.875). However, the total platelet count was found to decrease with the increasing glycaemic levels with a p value <0.001. A significant negative correlation was found between glycaemic levels and total platelet count (PC- HbA1c r = -0.164).Conclusions: This study showed that platelet morphology is altered with increasing glycaemic levels. These changes can be known by measurements of PVI which is an important simple and effortless tool can be used more extensively to predict the acute vascular events and thereby help curb morbidity and mortality.

Thermo-elastic-plastic transition in torsion of composite thick-walled circular cylinder subjected to pressure

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to present study of thermo-elastic-plastic transition in torsion of composite thick-walled circular cylinder subjected to pressure. The concept of transition theory is applied to evaluate shear stresses in a cylinder under torsion. Generalized strain measures are used to simplify the fundamental equations. It has been deduced from the analysis of stresses in the cylinder that in case of torsion, the cylinder of less non-homogeneous material without temperature is a safe design in comparison to the cylinder of highly non-homogeneous material with or without thermal effects, because shear stresses are maximal for the cylinder of less non-homogeneous material without thermal effects than for the non-homogeneous cylinder of high compressibility

Effect of CNT on the growth and agglomeration of TiO2 nanoparticles

    Get PDF
825-831Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) are agglomerated by inclusion of CNTs during the nucleation and growth process using the hydrothermal method at 160 ⁰C. The content of C-atoms was determined from EDAX-spectra and line scan. The XRD peak of TiO2 indicated the rutile phase R(210), while CNT- TiO2 showed the anatase phase A(004). Williamson-Hall (W-H) models showed the linear fitted negative slope, indicated the presence of compressive strain in TiO2 and CNT- TiO2 crystal lattice. Agglomeration of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed from the surface morphology and elemental analysis. The FTIR spectra showed the interfacial interaction between CNTs and TiO2 with vibrational frequency of Ti-O-C bonds at 1065 cm-1

Collapse Pressure Analysis of Transversely Isotropic Thick-Walled Cylinder Using Lebesgue Strain Measure and Transition Theory

    Get PDF
The objective of this paper is to provide guidance for the design of the thick-walled cylinder made up of transversely isotropic material so that collapse of cylinder due to influence of internal and external pressure can be avoided. The concept of transition theory based on Lebesgue strain measure has been used to simplify the constitutive equations. Results have been analyzed theoretically and discussed numerically. From this analysis, it has been concluded that, under the influence of internal and external pressure, circular cylinder made up of transversely isotropic material (beryl) is on the safer side of the design as compared to the cylinders made up of isotropic material (steel). This is because of the reason that percentage increase in effective pressure required for initial yielding to become fully plastic is high for beryl as compared to steel which leads to the idea of “stress saving” that reduces the possibility of collapse of thick-walled cylinder due to internal and external pressure

Integrated management of late blight of potato

    Get PDF
Late blight of potato is the major biotic constraint responsible for reduction in yield and quality of the pota-to crop. Globally, late blight is managed through application of multiple fungicidal chemical sprays affecting both human health and environment. Now a days, methods of biological control are gaining importance as these are non-toxic and also environment friendly. However, Phytophthora infestans multiplies very fast; therefore, biological con-trol method alone is not a viable option to manage late blight. Hence, integration of both methods is essential. Eleven treatments consisting of biocontrol agents and fungicides were evaluated against the late bight in three consecu-tive seasons (2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14) at ICAR-CPRIC, Modipuram. Meerut. The results revealed that the treat-ments ( T1 to T10) are effective for managing the disease up to certain level; however, lowest average disease se-verity (27.89%) was recorded in treatment when Bacillus subtilis (B5-0.25%) + Trichoderma viride (TV-0.7%) was applied before disease appearance followed by cymoxanil8+mancozeb 64%WP (0.3%) at onset of late blight and one more spray of B5+ TV after seven days. The next best treatment was application of B5+ TV before appearance of disease followed by metalaxyl 8+mancozeb 64%WP (0.25%) at onset of late blight and one more spray of B5+ TV against control (average disease severity 91.94%) with higher yield also except the treatment of three spray of mancozeb 75% WP (0.2%). These treatments could be integrated in farmer practices

Tea Cup in the brain, a rare case of penetrating brain injury in pediatric patient

    Get PDF
Head injuries are very common in children. All over the world, the most common mechanism is fall. These injuries are more prevalent in developing countries due to lack of education, poverty, lack of standard and scientific ways to child upbringing. Penetrating injuries in pediatric patients is extremely uncommon and usually occur due to sharp objects like knife, screw driver, drills, nails. We are reporting a rare case of a child with penetrating head injury due to tea cup, very commonly used crockery in every house hold. To the best of our knowledge, no similar case has ever been reported in world literature. Our case also emphasized the need for educating people about child care
