    Indian manganese ore reserves are depleting very fast Manganese ore (India) Ltd. realised that utilisation of Manganese ore fines will pave the way for conservation of lumpy high grade manganese ore. Manganese ore fines generated at Balaghat and Ukwa mines of MOIL were subjected to sintering studies at the R&D Centre of Paramount Sinters Pvt. Ltd. The studies indicated that fluxed sinter with very good strength and porosity could be produced. The sinters showed a high degree of reduction and even metalization was noticed. The chemical and physical characteristics indicated that sinters can be used in ferro manganese furnaces. Advantages of using sinter in the ferro alloy manufacture has been highlighted in this report. The authors have conc-luded that from the point of view of conservation and reduction of manufacturing cost, sintering has a vital role to play in ferro alloy industries

    ABSTRACT The present experimental study consider the effect of laminar mixed convection heat transfer in the entrance region of horizontal rectangular duct subjected to uniform heat flux on three sides with adiabatic top. Experimental facility includes ducts of aspect ratio of 2.5 and air as working fluid. Different wall temperatures and flow rates were measured. The range of parameters used were Reynolds number between 1000 to 2300, Grashoff number 10 5 -10 7 and Prandtl number of 0.7. Results were obtained in terms of wall and fluid temperatures distribution, Richardson number and Nusselt number. Richardson number affects the wall temperature distribution strongly during the flow in the entrance region i.e., wall temperatures steadily increases in the flow direction and after some length, it shows decrease in it. It is also observed that at entrance region. Nusselt number increases with increase in Richardson number

    Fractures of the proximal femur in the elderly in a sub-Saharan country

    Background: The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, radiographic and therapeutic profile of the fractures of the proximal femur in the elderly in a sub-Saharan country.Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was carried out at the orthopedic trauma department of Idrissa Pouye Hospital in Senegal. Sixty-six patients recruited were aged at least 90 years; and treated for proximal femur fracture between 2008 and 2017.Results: The median age of the patients was 91 years (90-107). Females represented 54.5%. The fracture was located in the right 65.2%. Femoral neck fractures were 53% predominant with 94.3% type IV according to Garden’s classification. Concerning the 31 patients with a pertrochanteric fractures, 61.3% were stable and 38.7% unstable. The time taken for seeking hospital care was an average of 5.8±9.7 days. All patients had a preoperative anesthesic score less than 4 according to the American society of anesthesiologists (ASA). The therapeutic indication was functional in 15.1% of cases, surgical by internal fixation in 39.2% and by arthroplasty in 45.7% of cases. Pertrochanteric fractures were managed by a dynamic hip screw (DHS) in 68.2% and by gamma nail in 18.2%. Femoral neck fractures were managed by Moore's arthroplasty in 93.3% and by bipolar hip prothesis (BHP) in 6.7%.Conclusions: Fractures of the proximal femur represent a growing problem in sub-Saharan Africa. For patients above 90 years, the management remains essentially surgical by internal fixation in pertrochanteric fractures or by arthroplasty in cervical fractures

    A practical approach to the sensitivity analysis for kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of heterogeneous catalysis

    Lattice kinetic Monte Carlo simulations have become a vital tool for predictive quality atomistic understanding of complex surface chemical reaction kinetics over a wide range of reaction conditions. In order to expand their practical value in terms of giving guidelines for the atomic level design of catalytic systems, it is very desirable to readily evaluate a sensitivity analysis for a given model. The result of such a sensitivity analysis quantitatively expresses the dependency of the turnover frequency, being the main output variable, on the rate constants entering the model. In the past, the application of sensitivity analysis, such as degree of rate control, has been hampered by its exuberant computational effort required to accurately sample numerical derivatives of a property that is obtained from a stochastic simulation method. In this study, we present an efficient and robust three-stage approach that is capable of reliably evaluating the sensitivity measures for stiff microkinetic models as we demonstrate using the CO oxidation on RuO2(110) as a prototypical reaction. In the first step, we utilize the Fisher information matrix for filtering out elementary processes which only yield negligible sensitivity. Then we employ an estimator based on the linear response theory for calculating the sensitivity measure for non- critical conditions which covers the majority of cases. Finally, we adapt a method for sampling coupled finite differences for evaluating the sensitivity measure for lattice based models. This allows for an efficient evaluation even in critical regions near a second order phase transition that are hitherto difficult to control. The combined approach leads to significant computational savings over straightforward numerical derivatives and should aid in accelerating the nano-scale design of heterogeneous catalysts

    COVID-19 outbreak at a reception centre for asylum seekers in Espoo, Finland

In April 2020, an increasing number of asylum seekers at a reception centre in Espoo, Finland presented with COVID-19 despite earlier implementation of preventive measures. We decided to screen the entire population of the centre for SARS-CoV-2. Methods we offered nasopharyngeal swab collection and SARS-CoV-2 real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis to the centre's clients. Symptoms were recorded at the time of diagnostic sample collection using electronic forms and followed up for two weeks through phone interviews and a review of medical records. Findings 260 clients were screened. Of them, 96 (37%) were found positive for SARS-CoV-2 and isolated. The high attack rate prompted the local public health authority to set the other clients in quarantine for 14 days to prevent further spread. Of the positive cases, 61 (64%) reported having had symptoms at the time of the screening or one week prior. Of the 35 initially asymptomatic individuals, 12 developed symptoms during follow-up, while 23 (or 18% of all screened SARS-CoV-2 positive clients) remained asymptomatic. No widespread transmission of COVID-19 was detected after the quarantine was lifted. Interpretation in this large COVID-19 outbreak, voluntary mass screening provided valuable information about its extent and helped guide the public health response. Comprehensive quarantine and isolation measures were likely instrumental in containing the outbreak. Blood pressure (BP) measurements are routinely performed during day oncology center visits for administration of ICI therapy but are often not assessed temporally to screen and monitor hypertension, which could independently increase the risk of ASCVD in cancer survivorship.
