Whole genome sequencing of experimental hybrids supports meiosis-like sexual recombination in Leishmania
Hybrid genotypes have been repeatedly described among natural isolates of Leishmania, and the recovery of experimental hybrids from sand flies co-infected with different strains or species of Leishmania has formally demonstrated that members of the genus possess the machinery for genetic exchange. As neither gamete stages nor cell fusion events have been directly observed during parasite development in the vector, we have relied on a classical genetic analysis to determine if Leishmania has a true sexual cycle. Here, we used whole genome sequencing to follow the chromosomal inheritance patterns of experimental hybrids generated within and between different strains of L. major and L. infantum. We also generated and sequenced the first experimental hybrids in L. tropica. We found that in each case the parental somy and allele contributions matched the inheritance patterns expected under meiosis 97–99% of the time. The hybrids were equivalent to F1 progeny, heterozygous throughout most of the genome for the markers that were homozygous and different between the parents. Rare, non-Mendelian patterns of chromosomal inheritance were observed, including a gain or loss of somy, and loss of heterozygosity, that likely arose during meiosis or during mitotic divisions of the progeny clones in the fly or culture. While the interspecies hybrids appeared to be sterile, the intraspecies hybrids were able to produce backcross and outcross progeny. Analysis of 5 backcross and outcross progeny clones generated from an L. major F1 hybrid, as well as 17 progeny clones generated from backcrosses involving a natural hybrid of L. tropica, revealed genome wide patterns of recombination, demonstrating that classical crossing over occurs at meiosis, and allowed us to construct the first physical and genetic maps in Leishmania. Altogether, the findings provide strong evidence for meiosis-like sexual recombination in Leishmania, presenting clear opportunities for forward genetic analysis and positional cloning of important genes.</div

The angular correlations of galaxies in the COSMOS field
We present measurements of the two-point galaxy angular correlation function
w(\theta) in the COSMOS field. Independent determinations of w(\theta) as a
function of magnitude limit are presented for both the HST ACS catalog and also
for the ground-based data from Subaru and the CFHT. Despite having
significantly different masks, these three determinations agree well. At bright
magnitudes (IAB<22), our data generally match very well with existing
measurements and with mock catalogs based on semi-analytic galaxy formation
calculations of Kitzbichler and White from the Millennium Simulation. The
exception is that our result is at the upper end of the expected cosmic
variance scatter for \theta > 10 arcmin, which we attribute to a particularly
rich structure known to exist at z~0.8. For fainter samples, however, the level
of clustering is somewhat higher than reported by some previous studies: in all
three catalogues we find w(\theta=1')~0.014 at a median IAB magnitude of 24. At
these very faintest magnitudes, our measurements agree well with the latest
determinations from the Canada-France Legacy Survey. This level of clustering
is approximately double what is predicted by the semi-analytic catalogs (at all
angles). The semi-analytic results allow an estimate of cosmic variance, which
is too small to account for the discrepancy. We therefore conclude that the
mean amplitude of clustering at this level is higher than previously estimated.Comment: Six pages, five figures. Accepted for publication in the ApJS COSMOS

Identification of a major locus interacting with MC1R and modifying black coat color in an F2 Nellore-Angus population
BACKGROUND: In cattle, base color is assumed to depend on the enzymatic activity specified by the MC1R locus, i.e. the extension locus, with alleles coding for black (E( D )), red (e), and wild-type (E( + )). In most mammals, these alleles are presumed to follow the dominance model of E( D ) > E( + ) > e, although exceptions are found. In Bos indicus x Bos taurus F(2) cattle, some E( D )E( + ) heterozygotes are discordant with the dominance series for MC1R and display various degrees of red pigmentation on an otherwise predicted black background. The objective of this study was to identify loci that modify black coat color in these individuals. RESULTS: Reddening was classified with a subjective scoring system. Interval analyses identified chromosome-wide suggestive (P < 0.05) and significant (P < 0.01) QTL on bovine chromosomes (BTA) 4 and 5, although these were not confirmed using single-marker association or Bayesian methods. Evidence of a major locus (F = 114.61) that affects reddening was detected between 60 and 73 Mb on BTA 6 (Btau4.0 build), and at 72 Mb by single-marker association and Bayesian methods. The posterior mean of the genetic variance for this region accounted for 43.75% of the genetic variation in reddening. This region coincided with a cluster of tyrosine kinase receptor genes (PDGFRA, KIT and KDR). Fitting SNP haplotypes for a 1 Mb interval that contained all three genes and centered on KIT accounted for the majority of the variation attributed to this major locus, which suggests that one of these genes or associated regulatory elements, is responsible for the majority of variation in degree of reddening. CONCLUSIONS: Recombinants in a 5 Mb region surrounding the cluster of tyrosine kinase receptor genes implicated PDGFRA as the strongest positional candidate gene. A higher density marker panel and functional analyses will be required to validate the role of PDGFRA or other regulatory variants and their interaction with MC1R for the modification of black coat color in Bos indicus influenced cattle

This brief addresses the issue of jury performance and jury responses to expert testimony. It reviews and summaries a substantial body of research evidence about jury behavior that has been produced over the past quarter century. The great weight of that evidence challenges the view that jurors abdicate their responsibilities as fact finders when faced with expert evidence or that they are pro-plaintiff, anti-defendant, and anti-business.
The Petitioners and amici on behalf of petitioners make a number of overlapping, but empirically unsupported, assertions about jury behavior in response to expert testimony, namely that juries are frequently incapable of critically evaluation expert testimony, are easily confused, give inordinate weight to expert testimony, are awed by science, defer to the opinions of unreliable experts, and, implicitly, that in civil trials juries tilt in favor of plaintiffs and against corporations
The ArgoNeuT Detector in the NuMI Low-Energy beam line at Fermilab
The ArgoNeuT liquid argon time projection chamber has collected thousands of
neutrino and antineutrino events during an extended run period in the NuMI
beam-line at Fermilab. This paper focuses on the main aspects of the detector
layout and related technical features, including the cryogenic equipment, time
projection chamber, read-out electronics, and off-line data treatment. The
detector commissioning phase, physics run, and first neutrino event displays
are also reported. The characterization of the main working parameters of the
detector during data-taking, the ionization electron drift velocity and
lifetime in liquid argon, as obtained from through-going muon data complete the
