Sleep deprivation and voluntary alcohol consumption in adolescent rats

Alcohol is one of the most common psychoactive drugs, and has been used by humans for thousands of years. Research has focused on the effects of alcohol on sleep, however recent trends in the literature have taken a more bidirectional approach to the relationship between alcohol and sleep. This research investigates the effects of chronic, partial sleep deprivation on alcohol consumption. Twelve adolescent Sprague Dawley rats had free access to two bottles at all times, one containing water and one containing a 7% alcohol and water solution. Sleep deprivation was achieved by using a forced exercise wheel. All rats were sleep restricted for a small (18hrs), medium (20hrs), and large (22hrs) amount every day for 7 days, one week. Additionally, there was a wheel control (WC) condition. Each rat experienced every level of the sleep deprivation condition and one week of the wheel control condition for a total of 4 experimental weeks. There was a significant effect of sleep condition on voluntary alcohol consumption, F (4, 44) = 9.191, p \u3c .001, partial η2 = .455. Post hoc testing using pairwise comparisons showed that the only group that was significantly different was the control group. Thus the WC condition also showed an increase in consumption, which does not allow us to conclude that there is a causal relationship between sleep deprivation and alcohol. Implications and future directions are discussed

Characterisation of the artist John Opie’s pigments, dated 1806

This paper discusses the contents of an artist’s paint box currently in the possession of St. Agnes Museum, Cornwall, UK, containing a selection of historic pigments. On its lid is a metal plaque that reads ‘John Opie 1806’. Very little is known about this paint box, so this piece of research aims to uncover some of the hidden information stored within it through identification of some of the pigments it contains. The main body of this research shows the first results obtained by the identification of a selection of the pigments from the paint box, using Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy (FTIR) and optical microscopy techniques. These findings will be considered in relation to what this tells us about the artist John Opie, the authenticity of the pigments within the paint box, and the use of pigments in the early nineteenth century

The periprosthetic fracture of the knee is a complication associated with high morbidity and its treatment is complex. The aim of this study was to present our results in the treatment of these fractures. A total of 29 cases of knee periprosthetic fractures were recorded. In 7 patients the femur fractures were treated with retrograde intramedullary nail, locking plates in 13, in 2 cases with prosthetic replacement and in 4 cases an orthopedic treatment was perform. At the tibia level the treatments included the replacement of the tibial com - ponent in one patient and another with a plate and orthopedic treatment. The results were good for the majority of patients, major complications were find in two cases with delayed union, a case of varus angulation and one infection. The blocking plates are currently the most accepted treatment in most of these fractures with the pos - sibility of using any type of prosthetic implant

Localization lengths of ultrathin disordered gold and silver nanowires

The localization lengths of ultrathin disordered Au and Ag nanowires are estimated by calculating the wire conductances as functions of wire lengths. We study Ag and Au monoatomic linear chains, and thicker Ag wires with very small cross sections. For the monoatomic chains we consider two types of disorder: bounded random fluctuations of the interatomic distances, and the presence of random substitutional impurities. The effect of impurity atoms on the nanowire conductance is much stronger. Our results show that electrical transport in ultrathin disordered wires may occur in the strong localization regime, and with relatively small amounts of disorder the localization lengths may be rather small. The localization length dependence on wire thickness is investigated for Ag nanowires with different impurity concentrations.Comment: 6 pages, postscript figures included, submitted to PR

Polymorphic ventricular arrhythmia triggered by temporary epicardial right ventricular stimulation after cardiac surgery

Temporary epicardial pacing is commonly used for rhythmic support in the acute postoperative period after cardiac surgery. Clinical studies suggest that pacing in the left ventricular epicardium during resynchronization therapy may be proarrhythmic in a minority of patients. The epicardial pacing increases transmural heterogeneity of repolarization. This could prolong the QT and JT intervals on the electrocardiogram (ECG), with subsequent proarrhythmic effects. The following case describes polymorphic ventricular arrhythmias after temporary epicardial ventricular stimulation
