We have conducted a NIR study of the environments of seven radio-loud quasars at redshifts 1<z<1.6. In present paper we describe deep KK band images obtained for the fields of ~6X6 arcmin around the quasars with 3σ\sigma limiting magnitudes of K~20.5. These fields were previously studied using deep B and R band images (Sanchez & Gonzalez-Serrano 1999). Using together optical and NIR data, it has been found a significant excess of galaxies which optical-NIR colours, luminosity, spatial scale, and number of galaxies are compatible with clusters at the redshift of the quasar. We have selected a sample of cluster candidates analyzing the R-K vs. K diagram. A ~25% of the candidates present red optical-NIR colours and an ultraviolet excess. This population has been also found in clusters around quasars at the same redshifts (Tanaka et al. 2000; Haines et al. 2001). These galaxies seem to follow a mixed evolution: a main passive evolution plus late starformation processes. The quasars do not inhabit the core of the clusters, being found in the outer regions. This result agrees with the hypothesis that the origin/feeding mechanism of the nuclear activity were merging processes. The quasars inhabit the region were a collision is most probably to produce a merger.Comment: 15 pages. A&A, accepted for publishin

La reputación del puerto de escala de cruceros: un análisis de antecedentes y consecuencias

    Get PDF
Effect of key design parameters on bacteria community and effluent pollutant concentrations in constructed wetlands using mathematical models

Constructed wetlands are currently recognized as an effective environmental biotechnology for wastewater treatment, but the influence of their design parameters on internal functioning and contaminant removal efficiency is still under discussion. In this work, the effect of aspect ratio and water depth on bacteria communities as well as treatment efficiency of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF) under the Mediterranean climate was evaluated, using a mathematical model. For this purpose, experimental results from four pilot-scale wetlands of equal surface area but different aspect ratios and water depth were used. The HSSF system was fed with municipal wastewater. The experimental data were simulated using the BIO_PORE model, developed in the COMSOL Multiphysics™ platform. Simulations with the BIO_PORE model fitted well to the experimental results, showing a higher removal efficiency for the shallower HSSF for COD (93.7% removal efficiency) and ammonia nitrogen (73.8%). The aspect ratio had a weak relationship with the bacteria distribution and the removal efficiency. In contrast, the water depth was a factor. The results of the present study confirm a previous hypothesis in which depth has an important impact on the biochemical reactions causing contaminants transformation and degradation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Adherence to 24-Hour Movement Guidelines among Spanish Adolescents: Differences between Boys and Girls

    Get PDF
Background: The 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for adolescents recommend >= 60 min/day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (PA), <= 2 h/day of screen time, and 8-10 h/day of sleep. Since little information is available on the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines in Spanish adolescents, this study aims to estimate the proportion of Spanish adolescents meeting individual and combinations of these 24-Hour Movement Guidelines. Moreover, another aim of this study is to examine gender differences in compliance with 24-Hour Movement Guidelines. Methods: A final sample of 1465 Spanish adolescents (44.50% girls; 13.08 +/- 0.86) participated in this cross-sectional study. The 24-Hour Movement Guidelines were measured during weekdays and the weekend days by self-reported questionnaires. Results: Although most adolescents met sleep duration guidelines (81.3%), only 38% and 15.8% met physical activity and screen time guidelines, respectively. Only 5.4% of these adolescents met all three 24-Hour Movement Guidelines, whereas 10.2% of this sample did not meet any of these guidelines. Although boys reported greater compliance with physical activity recommendations and girls with screen time recommendations, no significant gender differences were found in the compliance of all three 24-Hour Movement Guidelines. Conclusion: Given that 94.4% of Spanish adolescents did not meet 24-Hour Movement Guidelines, promoting all these three movement behaviours in both boys and girls is an urgent public health priority

    Proposal to study BsDˉsJB_s \to \bar D_{sJ} transitions

It is proposed to clear some of the puzzles of B decay to the broad Dˉ\bar{D}^{\ast\ast} states by studying the corresponding decay with strange states Bs0Ds0π+B_s^0 \to D_{s0}^{\ast -} \pi^+ at LHCb. Interpretation of the results should be easier due to the narrowness of the Ds0D_{s0}^{\ast -} state.Comment: 21 page

Development of an HIV prevention and life skills program for Spanish speaking gay and bisexual newcomers

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the creation, implementation, and evaluation of a life skills and HIV prevention program for Spanish-speaking gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) who are within three years of arrival in Canada. The Mano en Mano program consists of an initial day-long session followed by four two-hour evening sessions addressing HIV prevention, social isolation, social service, and migration issues. Evaluation showed a significant shift toward safer sex practice and decreased sense of social isolation as expressed in exit interviews. The Mano en Mano intervention shows movement in the right direction in HIV prevention and sexual health promotion and shows considerable potential to be effective and well liked by participants. Interventions of this type that build social networks and peer bonds in a sexual health context likely have potential to be useful and effective beyond the Latino newcomers who participated in this pilot

The Migratory Experiences, Access to Health Care and Employment of Immigrant and Refugee Latinos and Latinas Living with HIV in Toronto

    Get PDF
The present study documents and analyzes the everyday experiences of immigrant and refugee Latinos and Latinas living with HIV in Canada, particularly in Toronto. The main objective is to understand the issues that the Latino HIV positive community encounters during the migration process, the barriers accessing health care and employment in Canada, and strategies to counterbalance the negative effects of such barriers. Participants\u27 relationships with relatives, friends and partners are also analyzed as a means to understand better processes of discrimination and marginalization in the context of living with HIV. The study is carried out using a qualitative methodology, which allows deeper comprehension of social contexts and individuals\u27 perceptions and meanings. Thirty face to face interviews were conducted with HIV positive men and women originally from Latin America, representing a wide range of diversity in national origin, age, gender, and sexual orientation. The study contributes to the research done on the areas of migration, the experience of living with HIV/AIDS and links of migration and sexuality. It also attempts to be useful in the construction of a culture of coping strategies, and practical knowledge for managing the disease, which can be of direct interest for seropositive people themselves. Studies that explore the experiences of Latinos and Latinas living with HIV are particularly relevant at a time when in Canada the HIV/AIDS epidemic is growing fast in this community
