Vulnerabilidade do patrimônio ambiental tombado em Campinas-SP e sua relação com índice de vegetação.

Research conducted in forest fragments have contributed to the development of models for recovery of degraded areas, generating decrease deployment costs with increased efficiency, helping in forest management studies, and effectively preserving the remaining vegetation when considering the dynamics of regeneration compared to patterns of space occupation. The survey of the occupation history for the surrounding urban forest fragments located in the city of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, structured in a Geographical Information System (GIS), allowed to establish a classification which indicates the degree of vulnerability of these forests remnants based on the degree of deterioration of the landscape caused by the incidence of certain activities. The survey was made using legal decisions, occupation history, fauna and flora surveys, environmental reports, information on plant and animal biodiversity as well as the physical characteristics of the fragment?s area, which exemplified the degree and pattern of human occupation. The extraction of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for each area allowed to establish a relation between the occupation pattern for the surrounding and the changes in vegetation cover within these forests fragments, which presented a good match with the degree of vulnerability attributed in previous step

Abstract We report a clinical case of a rare variant of pemphigus - pemphigus herpetiformis - which combines the clinical features of dermatitis herpetiformis with the immunological findings of pemphigus. Due to its atypical presentation, it is frequently misdiagnosed as dermatitis herpetiformis. It is basically characterized by the herpetiform pattern of skin lesions, severe pruritus and by the presence of eosinophilic spongiosis confirmed on histopathology. We call attention to the excellent response to dapsone

    Foscarnet-induced penile ulceration

Foscarnet is used to treat infections with herpes viruses, including drug-resistant cytomegalovirus (CMV) and infections with herpes viruses 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2). There are some reports of intravenous foscarnet-induced penile and vulvar ulceration. The authors report a case of severe penile ulcers after the initiation of intravenous foscarnet therap

Rituximab in the treatment of refractory pemphigus vulgaris

    Photoallergic reaction to cyamemazine.

A 50-year-old man presented with a scaly erythema of the face, upper chest, forearms, and dorsum of the hands. He has been treated with cyamemazine for 6 months. Photopatch tests were performed and the patient was diagnosed with photoallergic reaction to cyamemazine. The drug was discontinued and a course of oral steroids was prescribed. The patient was advised to avoid light exposure. There has been no evidence of recurrence during a six-month follow-up period. Photoallergic reactions are much less frequent than phototoxic disorders. It is well known that several drugs including neuroleptics of the phenothiazine family may produce a skin eruption on light-exposed areas by dose-dependent (phototoxic) or photoallergic mechanisms. It is believed that photopatch testing, which is the clinical investigation of choice for suspected photoallergic reactions, is significantly underused in Europe and probably world-wide

Waveguiding properties of surface states in photonic crystals

We propose and analyze novel surface-state-based waveguides in bandgap photonic crystals. We discuss surface mode band structure, field localization and effect of imperfections on the waveguiding properties of the surface modes. We demonstrate that surface-state-based waveguides can be used to achieve directional emission out of the waveguide. We also discuss the application of the surface-state waveguides as efficient light couplers for conventional photonic crystal waveguides.Comment: 4 pages 5 figure

Adverse cutaneous reactions to drugs are frequent, affecting from 2% to 3% of all hospitalized patients. But only about 2% of these cutaneous reactions are severe and seldom are fatal. The term drug hypersensitivity syndrome refers to a specific severe drug reaction, including skin rash, fever, lymph node enlargement, and single or multiple organ involvement. The cutaneous rash is usually morbilliform. The drugs associated with the syndrome are: anticonvulsants, ACE inhibitors, Beta-blockers, allopurinol and sulphonamides. The differencial diagnosis includes maculopapular rash, exfoliative dermatitis, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis and Sézary syndrome. The interval between the starting of drug therapy and the onset of cutaneous reactions may be at least one month, and therefore the implication of the drug in the aetiology may be subdiagnosed.

Rate-flexible optical CDMA networks based on coherent modulation formats

In this paper, we propose, design, and assess the performance of optical coherent access networks based on optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) based on three distinct coherent modulation formats, namely, BPSK, QPSK, and 16-QAM. We design a flexible network architecture based on these coherent modulation formats to provide either single data rate transmissions or multiple data rate transmissions. In this way, the network supports users with the same transmission rate, or group of users transmitting at different data rates. We derive new close-form analytical expressions for both single and multiple rate use cases to assess the performance of the coherent OCDMA network. Results shown that the multi-rate data traffic from the users can coexist almost transparently in terms of network performance. The flexible OCDMA network might be a prospective alternative for implementing coherent systems for different service provision according to traffic demand requirements while supporting with high capacity, security, and simultaneous numbers of subscribers.
