How to Add Apples and Pears: Non-Symmetric Nash Bargaining and the Generalized Joint Surplus

    Get PDF
We generalize the equivalence of the non-symmetric Nash bargaining solution and the linear division of the joint surplus when bargainers use different utility scales. This equivalence in the general case requires the surplus each agent receives to be expressed in compatible, or comparable, units. This result is valid in the case of bargaining over multiple-issues. In addition, we discuss the requirements on the curvatures of the agents’ utility functions, or, in other words, on the bargainers’ attitudes towards risk.Bargaining Problems, Non-Symmetric Nash Bargaining Solution, Linear Sharing

The c.3274T> C mutation in the CFTR gene results in bronchiectasis and loss of lung function in a 44-year-old Peruvian woman: A very rare condition

CF is an autosomal recessive disease, requiring mutations to be present in both alleles in the CF transmembrane conductance regulatory gene (CFTR). The c.3274T> C (p.Tyr1092His) mutation is not registered in the “CFTR2 project” database, but it is registered in The Human Gene Mutation Database. Neither are the two DNAAF4 c.1177C> T (p.Leu393Phe) and DNAAF5 c.1195G> A (p.Glu399Lys) mutations found in the "CFTR Project”, and their clinical consequences are currently uncertain. Here, we report the case of a Peruvian woman presenting this mutation, bronchiectasis and loss of lung function and provide a review of the literature.

Tumor Microenvironment Heterogeneity: A Review of the Biology Masterpiece, Evaluation Systems, and Therapeutic Implications

    Get PDF
A tumor can be considered as a highly heterogeneous functional tissue, connected and dependent on the microenvironment, which sends and receives signals to and from the tumor tissue itself. Tumor cells alter the mechanical properties of the microenvironment in order to create favorable conditions for their proliferation. Stromal cells and non‐cellular elements of the extracellular matrix (ECM), including the host immune system, the fibrous scaffolding, the fundamental substance, and blood vascularization can determine tumoral cell morphologies, functions, aggressiveness, and response to treatment, as well as an accurate assessment of prognosis of the patients. Robust morphometric digital pathology techniques that are able to standardize measurements and analyse whole sets of immunohistochemical images are called for to identify, describe, and quantify the elements of the ECM. The computer‐automated segmentation algorithms are therefore required to increase the knowledge on the tumor microenvironment heterogeneity and to provide new therapeutic targets

First Results from the rapid-response spectrophotometric characterization of Near-Earth Objects

    Get PDF
As part of our multi-observatory, multi-filter campaign, we present \rmi color observations of 82 Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) obtained with the RATIR instrument on the 1.5m robotic telescope at the San Pedro Martir's National Observatory in Mexico. Our project is particularly focused on rapid response observations of small (850\lesssim 850 m) NEOs. The rapid response and the use of spectrophotometry allows us to constrain the taxonomic classification of NEOs with high efficiency. Here we present the methodology of our observations and our result, suggesting that the ratio of C-type to S-type asteroids in a size range of \sim30-850m is 1.1, which is in accordance with our previous results. We also find that 10%\% of all NEOs in our sample are neither C- nor S-type asteroidsComment: 31 pages, 4 tables, 10 figure

Impact of the ocean-atmosphere coupling on high-resolution future projections for the Mediterranean sea and surrounding climate from the Med-CORDEX ensemble

    Get PDF
Med-CORDEX is an international initiative that aims at developing fully coupled high resolution Regional Climate System Models (RCSMs) for the Mediterranean basin. After 11 years of work an ensemble of more than 25 multi-model and multi–scenario climatic simulations is now available (Darmaraki et al., 2019; Soto-Navarro et al., 2020). In this study, we analyze the impact of the high-resolution representation of the Mediterranean Sea and of the interaction between ocean and atmosphere, explicitly resolved in the Med-CORDEX simulations, in the projected evolution of the most relevant climatic variables for the Mediterranean basin and the adjacent regions during the 21st century. The final goal is to quantify up to what extent including the explicit and high-resolution representation of the ocean-atmosphere coupling is relevant for regional climate projections. The preliminary results show that, in general, higher resolution coupled simulations project a lower increase in the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) than lower resolution runs. This translates in a smaller input of heat and humidity to the atmosphere that, in turn, affect the cloud cover and precipitation over the basin and the adjacent continental areas. These changes are the result of a better representation of the Mediterranean Sea functioning in the Med-CORDEX RCSMs. In particular, they resolve better the mesoscale processes of the basin, which are partly responsible of the heat transport from the surface to deeper layers, and the ocean-atmosphere feedback that regulates the heat exchange

    Get PDF
