Point-contact spectroscopy of the borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C
Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on YNi2B2C single crystals in
the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main
crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the
electron-phonon interaction (EPI) function with a dominant maximum around 12meV
and a further weak structure (kink or shallow broad maximum) at higher energy
at about 50meV. Other phonon maxima at 20, 24 and 32meV specified in the phonon
DOS of YNi2B2C by neutron measurements [PRB, V.55, 9058 (1997)] are not
resolved in the PC spectra pointing out to the main role of the low energy
phonon modes in EPI. Directional study of the SC gap results in
\Delta_[100]=1.5meV for the a- direction and \Delta_[001]=2.4meV along the
c-axis which may point to anisotropic and/or multiband behavior. Noteworthy,
the critical temperature T_c in all cases corresponds to that of bulk samples.
The value 2\Delta_[001]/kT_c=3.6 is close to the BCS one of 3.52, and the
temperature dependence \Delta(T) is BCS-like, while for the a-direction
\Delta(T) deviates from mean-field BCS behavior above T_c/2. The directional
variation in \Delta can be attributed to the multiband nature of the SC state
in YNi2B2C predicted 10 years ago (PRL, V.80, 1730 (1998)).Comment: 3 figs, 2 pages, presented on M2S-HTSC Conference, July 9-14, 2006,

Revisiting the link between business strategy and performance: Evidence from hotels
This paper aims to investigate the competitive success factors for hotel companies and examine the link between
business strategy and performance. Using a structured questionnaire, the researchers collected data from hotel
managers in Spain. Study results suggest that a firm’s assets and strategies have a greater influence on performance
than industry forces do. This lack of direct influence by industry forces is due to the sector’s specific
characteristics, which cannot be overlooked during analysis. Based on these research findings, theoretical and
managerial implications and future research are presented
Analysis of mutations in streptomycin-resistant strains reveals a simple and reliable genetic marker for identification of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype
The Mycobacterium tuberculosis pandemic is a major health problem, further complicated by an increasing incidence of drug-resistant isolates and the existence of highly transmissible strains, such as those in the Beijing family. Streptomycin (STR)-resistant M. tuberculosis clinical isolates have been analyzed to look for mutations in the rpsL, rrs, and gidB genes. In addition, the Rv1258c gene, which encodes Tap, an efflux pump that transports STR, has been sequenced. Mutations affecting codons 43 and 88 of the rpsL gene were found in 44.4% of the strains, and 16.7% of the strains carried mutations in the rrs gene, both of which probably contribute to STR resistance. Many strains presented with mutations in the gidB gene, but the implication of those mutations in STR resistance remains unclear. Interestingly, a cytosine nucleotide insertion between positions 580 and 581 (denominated Tap580) in the Rv1258c gene has been found in all Beijing isolates included in this study, suggesting that it might be a novel polymorphism specific to the Beijing family of M. tuberculosis. A simple and fast restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)-PCR method for detecting the Tap580 insertion has been developed and used to screen a collection of 220 DNA samples obtained from cultures of M. tuberculosis isolates and 30 respiratory specimens. In all cases, the Beijing and non-Beijing representative samples were identified correctly. Tap580 is a novel polymorphism specific to the highly transmissible Beijing family, which allows for fast detection of these strains even at the very early stages of infection

state. The PC EPI spectra are qualitatively similar for the different
directions. Contrary, directional study of the SC gap results in
\Delta_[100]=1.5 meV for the a direction and \Delta_[001]=2.3 meV along the c
axis; however the critical temperature T_c in PC in all cases is near to that
in the bulk sample. The value 2\Delta_[001]/kT_c=3.6 is close to the BCS value
of 3.52, and the temperature dependence \Delta_[001](T) is BCS-like, while the
for small gap \Delta_[100](T) is below BCS behavior at T>T_c/2 similarly as in
the two-gap superconductor MgB2. It is supposed that the directional variation

Effect of Demographic and Health Dynamics on Cognitive Status in Mexico between 2001 and 2015: Evidence from the Mexican Health and Aging Study
Sources of health disparities such as educational attainment, cardiovascular risk factors, and access to health care affect cognitive impairment among older adults. To examine the extent to which these counteracting changes affect cognitive aging over time among Mexican older adults, we examine how sociodemographic factors, cardiovascular diseases, and their treatment relate to changes in cognitive function of Mexican adults aged 60 and older between 2001 and 2015. Self and proxy respondents were classified as dementia, cognitive impairment no dementia (CIND), and normal cognition. We use logistic regression models to examine the trends in dementia and CIND for men and women aged 60 years or older using pooled national samples of 6822 individuals in 2001 and 10,219 in 2015, and sociodemographic and health variables as covariates. We found higher likelihood of dementia and a lower risk of CIND in 2015 compared to 2001. These results remain after adjusting for sociodemographic factors, cardiovascular diseases, and their treatment. The improvements in educational attainment, treatment of diabetes and hypertension, and better access to health care in 2015 compared to 2001 may not have been enough to counteract the combined effects of aging, rural residence disadvantage, and higher risks of cardiovascular disease among older Mexican adults
Molecular epidemiology of clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from horses in Ireland
Clinical isolates (n = 63) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa obtained from various sites in 63 horses were compared using ERIC2 RAPD PCR to determine their genetic relatedness. Resulting banding patterns (n = 24 genotypes) showed a high degree of genetic heterogeneity amongst all isolates examined, indicating a relative non-clonal relationship between isolates from these patients, employing this genotyping technique. This study characterised 63 clinical isolates into 24 distinct genotypes, with the largest cluster (genotype E) accounting for 10/63 (15.9%) of the isolates. ERIC2 RAPD PCR proved to be a highly discriminatory molecular typing tool of P. aeruginosa in isolates recovered from horses. With the adoption of several controls to aid reproducibility, this technique may be useful as an alternative to PFGE, particularly in epidemiological investigations of outbreaks where speed may be a significant parameter. This is the first report of clonal heterogeneity amongst P. aeruginosa from horses and demonstrated that ERIC RAPD PCR is a rapid method for the examination of this species in horses, which may be useful in outbreak analysis
