    Water Droplet Bouncing on a non-Superhydrophobic Si Nanosprings

    Self-cleaning surfaces often make use of superhydrophobic coatings that repel water. Here, we report a hydrophobic Si nanospring surface, that effectively suppresses wetting by repelling water droplets. We investigated the dynamic response of Si nanospring arrays fabricated by glancing angle deposition. The vertical standing nanospring arrays were approximately 250 nm tall and 60 nm apart, which allowed the droplets to rebound within a few milliseconds after contact. Amazingly, the morphology of the nanostructures influences the impact dynamics. The rebound time and coefficient of restitution were also found to be higher for Si nanosprings than vertical SI columns. It has been proposed that the restoring force of the Si nanosprings may be responsible for the water droplet rebound and can be explained by considering the droplet/nanospring surface as a coupled spring system. These nanospring surfaces may find applications in self-cleaning windows, liquid-repellent exteriors, glass panels of solar cells, and antifouling agents for roof tiling.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, 2 table

    A Unique Way to Generate Password at Random Basis and Sending it Using a New Steganography Technique

    Data hiding is a technique for secure transmission of confidential data. Many data hiding techniques exist and steganography is the most important one. This paper presents a new steganography method in spatial domain. We use steganography to send confidential information from sender to receiver. Here, we generate password at random basis in a unique way based on system time and date. Then we send this confidential password using steganography by implementing a totally new embedding and extraction technique based on exact length of bits in binary representation of ASCII values. Here, confidential text information is embedded into cover image generating a stego image and sent to receiver maintaining top level secrecy

    A study on evaluation of ASHAs for their knowledge, attitude and practice towards newborn care in Howrah district of West Bengal

    Background: : Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) is a trained female community health activist. ASHAs are local women trained to act as facilitator and promoters of health care in their communities. ASHA is trained to work as an interface between the community and the public health system. ASHA play an important role in newborn care to reduce their morbidity and mortality.Methods: Data were collected from ASHAs working in Shibbur area of Howrah District, west Bengal. The study sample consisted of 70 ASHAs working in the Shibpur area that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A predesigned pretested questionnaire of ASHA was used to collect data in the study.Results: The mean age of ASHAs was 35.74 years. Only 32 (45.71%) had received middle level (class VIII) education. Only 45.71 % of ASHAs had good knowledge and practice regarding hypothermia and its complication and the procedure of providing warmth the baby after delivery. Only 57.1% of ASHA had good knowledge regarding counseling and problem solving on breast feeding. Only 38.57% had good knowledge and practices on identification and basic skill on management of Low Birth Weight (LBW) having birth weight of <2.5kg and pre-term baby (<37 weeks of gestation).Conclusions: In the present study, we found that Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of ASHAs were inadequate in some aspects of newborn care. This gap of knowledge should be taken seriously during training procedures so that effective knowledge and essential skill for newborn care can be imparted. During recruitment of ASHAs higher literally status should be given preferences

    Female Medical Student Admissions in Nepal

    Background In Nepal, a developing country in South Asia, the number of female medical students has increased significantly. Aims The present study was carried out to explore perceived perceptions for this increase, study the perceived impact on teaching-learning activities, medical school infrastructure and possible perceived changes in the doctor-patient relationship. Method  First, second and third year students were invited to participate in focus group discussions (FGDs). Fifty-four students were willing to participate. Twenty-five were from the first year, 20 from the second and 9 from the third year. The FGDs conducted over a 90 minute period were voice and video recorded. The groups consisted of both males and females from a particular intake. The findings were transcribed verbatim. Results Participants felt more female students were taking up medicine in the country because of more colleges opening in the cities and towns making it easier for female students to enrol in the course. Also parents consider medicine as a safe, noble and dignified profession for their daughters.  Participants suggested women are more empathetic doctors and the doctor-patient relationship might become more patient-focused. Women doctors can serve as a source of inspiration and the overall impact on Nepal would be positive.     Conclusion Participating students perceived the increasing number of female medical students may be due to changes in Nepalese society. This study was carried out only among three batches of students in a single medical school. Further studies among different batches of students and among interns in other medical schools are required. Studies among postgraduate students and doctors are also needed.

    DNA sequence variation and haplotype structure of the ICAM1 and TNF genes in 12 ethnic groups of India reveal patterns of importance in designing association studies

    We have examined the patterns of DNA sequence variation in and around the genes coding for ICAM1 and TNF, which play functional and correlated roles in inflammatory processes and immune cell responses, in 12 diverse ethnic groups of India. We aimed to (a) quantify the nature and extent of the variation, and (b) analyse the observed patterns of variation in relation to population history and ethnic background. At the ICAM1 and TNF loci, respectively, the total numbers of SNPs that were detected were 28 and 12. Many of these SNPs are not shared across ethnic groups and are unreported in the dbSNP or TSC databases, including two fairly common non-synonymous SNPs at positions 13487 and 13542 in the ICAM1 gene. Conversely, the TNF-376A SNP that is reported to be associated with susceptibility to malaria was not found in our study populations, even though some of the populations inhabit malaria endemic areas. Wide between-population variation in the frequencies of shared SNPs and coefficients of linkage disequilibrium have been observed. These findings have profound implications in case-control association studies

    Dense-core senile plaques in the Flemish variant of Alzheimer's disease are vasocentric

    Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by deposition of beta-amyloid (Abeta) in diffuse and senile plaques, and variably in vessels. Mutations in the Abeta-encoding region of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene are frequently associated with very severe forms of vascular Abeta deposition, sometimes also accompanied by AD pathology. We earlier described a Flemish APP (A692G) mutation causing a form of early-onset AD with a prominent cerebral amyloid angiopathy and unusually large senile plaque cores. The pathogenic basis of Flemish AD is unknown. By image and mass spectrometric Abeta analyses, we demonstrated that in contrast to other familial AD cases with predominant brain Abeta42, Flemish AD patients predominantly deposit Abeta40. On serial histological section analysis we further showed that the neuritic senile plaques in APP692 brains were centered on vessels. Of a total of 2400 senile plaque cores studied from various brain regions from three patients, 68% enclosed a vessel, whereas the remainder were associated with vascular walls.     RSS-based indoor localization system with single base station

    The paper proposes an Indoor Localization System (ILS) which uses only one fixed Base Station (BS) with simple non-reconfigurable antennas. The proposed algorithm measures Received Signal Strength (RSS) and maps it to the location in the room by estimating signal strength of a direct line of sight (LOS) signal and signal of the first order reflection from the wall. The algorithm is evaluated through both simulations and empirical measurements in a furnished open space office, sampling 21 different locations in the room. It is demonstrated the system can identify user’s real-time location with a maximum estimation error below 0.7 m for 80% confidence Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) user level, demonstrating the ability to accurately estimate the receiver’s location within the room. The system is intended as a cost-efficient indoor localization technique, offering simplicity and easy integration with existing wireless communication systems. Unlike comparable single base station localization techniques, the proposed system does not require beam scanning, offering stable communication capacity while performing the localization process

    Molecular Interpretation of ACTH-β-Endorphin Coaggregation: Relevance to Secretory Granule Biogenesis

    Peptide/protein hormones could be stored as non-toxic amyloid-like structures in pituitary secretory granules. ACTH and β-endorphin are two of the important peptide hormones that get co-stored in the pituitary secretory granules. Here, we study molecular interactions between ACTH and β-endorphin and their colocalization in the form of amyloid aggregates. Although ACTH is known to be a part of ACTH-β-endorphin aggregate, ACTH alone cannot aggregate into amyloid under various plausible conditions. Using all atom molecular dynamics simulation we investigate the early molecular interaction events in the ACTH-β-endorphin system, β-endorphin-only system and ACTH-only system. We find that β-endorphin and ACTH formed an interacting unit, whereas negligible interactions were observed between ACTH molecules in ACTH-only system. Our data suggest that ACTH is not only involved in interaction with β-endorphin but also enhances the stability of mixed oligomers of the entire system
