    Cosmography of f(R) gravity

    It is nowadays accepted that the universe is undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion as tested by the Hubble diagram of Type Ia Supernovae (SNeIa) and several LSS observations. Future SNeIa surveys and other probes will make it possible to better characterize the dynamical state of the universe renewing the interest in cosmography which allows a model independent analysis of the distance - redshift relation. On the other hand, fourth order theories of gravity, also referred to as f(R)f(R) gravity, have attracted a lot of interest since they could be able to explain the accelerated expansion without any dark energy. We show here how it is possible to relate the cosmographic parameters (namely the deceleration q0q_0, the jerk j0j_0, the snap s0s_0 and the lerk l0l_0 parameters) to the present day values of f(R)f(R) and its derivatives f(n)(R)=dnf/dRnf^{(n)}(R) = d^nf/dR^n (with n=1,2,3n = 1, 2, 3) thus offering a new tool to constrain such higher order models. Our analysis thus offers the possibility to relate the model independent results coming from cosmography to the theoretically motivated assumptions of f(R)f(R) cosmology.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    Modelling clusters of galaxies by f(R)-gravity

    We consider the possibility that masses and gravitational potentials of galaxy cluster, estimated at X-ray wavelengths, could be explained without assuming huge amounts of dark matter, but in the context of f(R)f(R)-gravity. Specifically, we take into account the weak field limit of such theories and show that the corrected gravitational potential allows to estimate the total mass of a sample of 12 clusters of galaxies. Results show that such a gravitational potential provides a fair fit to the mass of visible matter (i.e. gas + stars) estimated by X-ray observations, without the need of additional dark matter while the size of the clusters, as already observed at different scale for galaxies, strictly depends on the interaction lengths of the corrections to the Newtonian potential.Comment: 18 pages, 34 figure

    Comprehensive cosmographic analysis by Markov Chain Method

    We study the possibility to extract model independent information about the dynamics of the universe by using Cosmography. We intend to explore it systematically, to learn about its limitations and its real possibilities. Here we are sticking to the series expansion approach on which Cosmography is based. We apply it to different data sets: Supernovae Type Ia (SNeIa), Hubble parameter extracted from differential galaxy ages, Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) data. We go beyond past results in the literature extending the series expansion up to the fourth order in the scale factor, which implies the analysis of the deceleration, q_{0}, the jerk, j_{0} and the snap, s_{0}. We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo Method (MCMC) to analyze the data statistically. We also try to relate direct results from Cosmography to dark energy (DE) dynamical models parameterized by the Chevalier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) model, extracting clues about the matter content and the dark energy parameters. The main results are: a) even if relying on a mathematical approximate assumption such as the scale factor series expansion in terms of time, cosmography can be extremely useful in assessing dynamical properties of the Universe; b) the deceleration parameter clearly confirms the present acceleration phase; c) the MCMC method can help giving narrower constraints in parameter estimation, in particular for higher order cosmographic parameters (the jerk and the snap), with respect to the literature; d) both the estimation of the jerk and the DE parameters, reflect the possibility of a deviation from the LCDM cosmological model.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figure

    Chemical and Thermal Effects of Trace Components in Hydrogen Rich Gases on Combustion

    The production of carbon-neutral fuels through clean energy has been defined as a target by the European Union and by several international institutions. If the concepts are available, hydrogen, in particular, is considered to be one of the most target-oriented, ecologically and economically realizable approaches. In terms of safety, long-time storage and long-distance transport of hydrogen are still under development. However, pipeline systems similar to those for natural gas are being considered. Gas quality criteria will have to be developed for this case. The effects of trace components in the hydrogen on chemical and thermal aspects are not yet sufficiently understood and need to be characterized more precisely. For these reasons, this work presents a detailed analysis for a more complete understanding of the phenomena involved. More specifically, the flame structure, temperature profile and overall reactivity were first determined for gas mixtures analyzed under four varying dilutions of carbon dioxide, carbon oxide, nitrogen and methane in hydrogen. The characterization of the total reactivity and the laminar burning velocity offers an appealing solution to quantify the effects of dilution. The most distinctive effects of the operating conditions on the ignition phenomena have been worked out numerically for the lower and upper boundaries and have been discussed. The results collected in this work provide a robust feature for a detailed evaluation of normal operation as well as the accidental release of the hydrogen-rich fuels

    Mono-dimensional blue native-PAGE and bi-dimensional blue native/urea-PAGE or /SDS-PAGE combined with nLC-ESI-LIT-MS/MS unveil membrane protein heteromeric and homomeric complexes in streptococcus thermophilus

    Protein interactions are essential elements for the biological machineries underlying biochemical and physiological mechanisms indispensable for microorganism life. By using mono-dimensional blue native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (1D-BN-PAGE), two-dimensional blue native/urea-PAGE (2D-BN/urea-PAGE) and two-dimensional blue native/SDS-PAGE (2D-BN/SDS-PAGE), membrane protein complexes of Streptococcus thermophilus were resolved and visualized. Protein complex and oligomer constituents were then identified by nLC-ESI-LIT-MS/MS. In total, 65 heteromeric and 30 homomeric complexes were observed, which were then associated with 110 non-redundant bacterial proteins. Protein machineries involved in polysaccharide biosynthesis, molecular uptake, energy metabolism, cell division, protein secretion, folding and chaperone activities were highly represented in electrophoretic profiles; a number of homomeric moonlighting proteins were also identified. Information on hypothetical proteins was also derived. Parallel genome sequencing unveiled that the genes coding for the enzymes involved in exopolysaccharide biosynthesis derive from two separate clusters, generally showing high variability between bacterial strains, which contribute to a unique, synchronized and active synthetic module. The approach reported here paves the way for a further functional characterization of these protein complexes and will facilitate future studies on their assembly and composition during various growth conditions and in different mutant backgrounds, with important consequences for biotechnological applications of this bacterium in dairy productions. Biological significance Combined proteomic procedures have been applied to the characterization of heteromultimeric and homomeric protein complexes from the membrane fraction of S. thermophilus. Protein machineries involved in polysaccharide biosynthesis, molecular uptake, energy metabolism, cell division, protein secretion, folding and chaperone activities were identified; information on hypothetical and moonlighting proteins were also derived. This study is original in the lactic bacteria context and maybe considered as preliminary to a deeper functional characterization of the corresponding protein complexes. Due to the large use of S. thermophilus as a starter for dairy productions, the data reported here may facilitate future investigations on protein complex assembly and composition under different experimental conditions or for bacterial strains having specific biotechnological applications

    Surgical management of pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland in elderly patients: Role of morphological features.

    The neoplasms of the salivary glands account for 2% of head and neck tumors and the most common form is the Pleomorphic Adenoma (PA). Parotid gland is affected from 80% to 90% of cases. In elderly this tumors occurs mostly in females. These benign tumors are composed of epithelial and myoepithelial cells that are arranged with various morphological patterns and subtypes. The classification of these tumors is also based on the amount and nature of the stroma. In literature there is a almost complete consensus that, in the major salivary glands, PAs are enclosed by a layer of fibrous tissue often called "capsule" but there is disagreement about the form, extention and thickness of this layer. The treatment is surgical and there are two main different surgical approaches: an enucleation (local dissection) or so-called subtotal superficial parotidectomy and lateral or superficial total parotidectomy. Histopathological characteristics of PAs especially of capsular alterations such as thin capsule areas, capsule-free regions, capsule penetration, satellite nodules and pseudopodia in the different subtypes are important for the choice of surgical treatment and the first explanation for tumor recurrence.
