Instrumented indentation applied to the mechanical characterization of polyurethane derived from castor oil
A viscosidade aparente determinada, utilizando penetrador esférico em testes de força aplicada constante, é igual a (22 ± 2) × 10(12) Pa.s.The mechanical properties of polyurethane derived from castor oil, obtained by instrumented indentation technique with pyramidal and spherical indenters are reported. The influence of the indenter shape on the values of mechanical properties of the polymer was investigated. The indentations were made with pyramidal Berkovich, cube corner and a spherical indenter with radius of 150 μm in a Nanoindenter XP TM. The applied loads varied between 1 and 200 mN. The penetration depth increases for acute indenters, being higher for the cube corner tip. The hardness and elastic modulus were determined using the method of Oliver and Pharr. It was found that the measured values for hardness are higher for more acute indenters. The hardness with the pyramidal Berkovich tip was 0.14 GPa for small penetrations and 0.12 GPa for higher penetration depths. The values obtained with a cube corner tip were 25 to 30% higher. This is related to the volumes of regions with high plastic deformation in the case of acute indenters compared to the volumes of regions that present viscoelastic deformation. The apparent viscosity determined using the spherical indenter, in tests with applied constant forces, is equal to (22 ± 2) × 10(12) Pa.s.CNPqFAPES
Platinum nanoparticles stabilized by N-heterocyclic thiones. Synthesis and catalytic activity in mono- and di-hydroboration of alkynes
N-Heterocyclic Thiones (NHT) proved to be efficient ligands for the stabilization of small platinum nanoparticles (1.3-1.7 nm), synthesized by decomposition of [Pt(dba)2], under a H2 atmosphere, in the presence of variable sub-stoichiometric amounts of the NHT. Full characterization by means of TEM, HR-TEM, NMR, ICP, TGA and XPS have been carried out, providing information about the nature of the metal nanoparticles and the interaction of the NHT ligands to the metal surface. Importantly, DFT calculations indicate that some NHT ligands interact with the metal through the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond of the imidazole fragment in addition to the sulfur atom, thus providing additional stabilization to the nanoparticles. According to XPS, TGA and ICP techniques, the surface coverage by the ligand increases by decreasing the size of the substituents on the nitrogen atom. The platinum nanoparticles have been used as catalyst in the hydroboration of alkynes. The most active system is that with a less covered surface area lacking an interaction of the ligand by means of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond. This catalyst hydroborates alkynes with excellent selectivities towards the monoborylated anti-Markovnikov product (vinyl-boronate) when one equiv. of borane is used. Very interestingly, aliphatic alkynes undergo a second hydroborylation process leading to the corresponding 1,1- and 1,2-diboroylated species with good selectivities towards the former.España MINECO (Projects CTQ2016-76267-P, CTQ2016-80814-R and CTQ2016- 81797-REDC)España Junta de Andalucía Project FQM-212
Short-term effects of impurities in the CO2 stream injected into fractured carbonates.
After the Paris Agreement in which 195 countries are involved, the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is now an accepted technology in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In Spain, Fundación Ciudad de la Energía (CIUDEN) has successfully completed the full CCS chain, being CO2 captured in the Technology Development Centre in Cubillos del Sil (León, Spain) whereas that it is geologically stored in a deep saline aquifer, formed by fractured carbonates with poor matrix porosity, located in the Technology Development Plant (TDP) at Hontomín (Burgos, Spain). The results of the field tests, in which up to 150 tons of CO2 and synthetic air (5 %v of N2 and O2) were co-injected on site, are analyzed in this paper comparing the operational parameters gained during the injection of impure CO2 (pressures, temperatures and flow ranges) with its corresponding baseline previously determined (i.e. 1,500 tons of pure CO2 were injected during the reservoir hydraulic characterization). Besides that, the geochemical reactivity analysis of impure CO2 injected in this saline aquifer and its correlation with the results from laboratory tests were assessed. As main conclusions from laboratory scale results, a porosity diminution was measured after the injection of CO2 with 5 %v of SO2; apart from that, without SO2, the effluent pH was in the range of 7-8 whereas in case of CO2 and SO2, a pH of 1-2 was obtained. Otherwise and focused on field scale tests, a density decrease was detected comparing the base case (pure CO2) with the CO2 injection containing 5.1 %v of synthetic air. On the other hand, Ca2+, SO42-, Mg2+ and K+ migration effects in the rock were also detected and analyzed
Helminth communities of the exotic introduced turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans in southwestern Spain: Transmission from native turtles
We report the prevalence and diversity of helminth parasites found in native turtles Mauremys leprosa and Emys orbicularis from three localities in southwestern Spain and we describe the helminth communities of exotic turtles Trachemys scripta elegans coexisting in the wild with both native turtle species. Five nematodes species were identified, of which Serpinema microcephalus was the only species common between two localities, although infection parameters were different between them. This is the first report of cross transmission of S. microcephalus and Falcaustra donanaensis from native to exotic turtles and the first report of genus Physaloptera in turtles of the Palearctic Region. Continuous releasing of exotic pet turtles in wildlife ecosystems increases the risk of parasite introductions and, consequently, potential transmission to native species, and highlights the impending need for regulation of pet turtle trade in Europe
Understanding illnesses through a film festival: an observational study
Audio-visual materials play a fundamental role in the context of education, care and clinical treatment, as they seem to have a high impact on public awareness. This study aims to describe what messages are perceived by the society at an International Festival of Short Films and Art on Diseases that may help to understand difficult topics, such as illness, dying and suffering.
Through an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study, using full participant observation and an open, self-administered questionnaire, 32 short films were analysed during a healthcare art festival. Categories were developed using inductive content analysis. The message perceived by the participants, after the viewing of the shorts and reflection of the debates among the attendees, were considered in four categories: i) creative and positive education is possible; ii) awareness of preconception and practical duties; iii) meaning of life changes the experience of illness; iv) family and caregivers also experienced suffering. The short films are considered as an excellent tool to generate social dialogue and debate. Public events can be understood as an opportunity to ac- quire, in an emotional and critical manner, other competencies for public awareness. Together, they are capable of communicating difficult messages through a fast, positive, and creative way
Transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation: systematic literature review
Surgical repair of some complex congenital heart diseases involves reconstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract using homografts, bioprostheses, bovine jugular grafts or other valved conduits between the right ventricle and the main pulmonary artery. Although these surgical procedures may be performed with low mortality rates, the life span of these implanted valves or conduits is usually short (< 10 years) due to either degeneration and/or calcification. Variable degrees of pulmonary stenosis, often associated with pulmonary insufficiency, are consequences of conduit degeneration. In 2000, Bonhoeffer et al. were the first to report the transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation (TPVI) of a bioprosthetic pulmonary valve later named Melody® valve (Medtronic, Minneapolis, USA). The technique was initially developed to limit the need for multiple surgical procedures, and, ultimately, to work as a surrogate of a new surgical valve replacement. Subsequent clinical studies in Europe and the United States confirmed the safety and efficacy of this technique in a larger number of patients. Since the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária - Anvisa) granted approval for clinical use of the Melody® transcatheter pulmonary biological valve in February 2103, we deemed that a judicious assessment of this new technology was timely and necessary before the widespread use in our country. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic literature review on the use of TPVI in patients with dysfunctional homografts, valved conduits and bioprostheses implanted surgically in the right ventricular outflow tract.
