This research shows the analysis on the issue of alienation of a novel entitled The Catcher in the Rye by J. D Salinger. The main topic of this analysis is the issue of alienation on adolescent. Salinger represents human as an alienated adolescent in his work. Salinger implies that alienation have causes and effects. He also shows that alienation have a strong influence towards the development of an adolescent’s personality. The representation of alienation in the story is the source of the analysis to find the causes and the effects of alienation that happened towards adolescent life. In order to analyze the object of the research, the writer uses psychoanalysis method and applies the theoretical concept of Melvin Seeman. The method that used in analyzing the work is called Library Research Process method. After analyzing the work, the writer found that Salinger depicts that alienation is usually happens because of two main causes, namely; feeling of loss or grief and unfulfilled expectation. While, the effects implicitly seen from the story that are; trauma and denial that could irritate the development of adolescent’s personality

Transfigurative Power of the Holy Spirit by Prayer and Preaching

United Methodist churches (UMC) are declining due to the neglect of the Holy Spirit’s presence and action in congregational settings. Current day United Methodists have sanitized the experiential nature of the Holy Spirit; as well as under emphasizing the Spirit’s authority and wisdom. The Holy Spirit is a gift to the church, yet it is often rejected. The UMC churches have missed the signs of the culture and have lost their connection within their communities. As a result, the church has become clueless to what the Spirit is up to. This loss of the vernacular spirit-voice has silently morphed into institutionalism and structure. Institutionalism has blinded us from seeing the very people Jesus was interested in: the poor and needy, the oppressed, blinded, hurt, and broken. We live in a society fascinated with death more than life. However, our death throes can be a prime time for the church to exercise its Divine power to pray life into our churches and into our communities. It is a prime time for preachers to be bold with the prophetic Word of God. It is a prime time the people of God seek a deeper spirit-led experiential life to be witnessed in their neighborhoods. The time is ripe to rediscover the teachings and power of the Holy Spirit. The time is ripe for a revival. This dissertation postulates that the most effective way for the United Methodist Church to reclaim the embodiment of the Holy Spirit in the 21st century church as experienced during historical revivals is by Spirit-infused Preaching and Spirit-powered Prayer. This is our roadmap to revival. It is a reminder that we are not called to transform institutions, but instead are called to transfigure lives. And that can only be done by the transfiguring power of the Holy Spirit

Phonics Preparation in Teacher Education Programs

Phonics is the basis upon which the English-speaking world learns to read. Students learn phonics in early elementary school to learn to read; therefore, teachers need to have a working knowledge of phonics with which to instruct their students. However, a report by the United States Department of Education found that few preservice teachers were competent in phonics. Liberty University, which teaches phonics as part of its teacher education program, has conducted a study on the level of knowledge demonstrated by the preservice teachers upon completion of the phonics course. The Liberty University students’ scores compared favorably with the national average as reported by the United States Department of Education

Lewis in the Rye: An Approach to Controversial Literature

    Get PDF
This thesis aims to coalesce literary criticism with Christian theology to provide a guideline for how Christians, who uphold a certain moral logic, should interact with literature that sparks controversy among readers. An analysis of J.D. Salinger’s novel Catcher in the Rye (1951) will be considered through the lens of C.S. Lewis’ commentary on good reading, good critique, and good art. Catcher in the Rye, an American novel, contains elements of derogatory language, promiscuous scenes, and insinuations of nihilism. How would C.S. Lewis, a British novelist and a prominent figure in Christian thought, read Salinger’s work: would he find it delightful or would he even consider it at all? The conclusions from this case study may prompt some contemplation about the Christian experience of engaging with the world through literature

A Multiparameter, Numerical Stability Analysis of a Standing Cantilever Conveying Fluid

In this paper, we numerically examine the stability of a standing cantilever conveying fluid in a multiparameter space. Based on nonlinear beam theory, our mathematical model turns out to be replete with exciting behavior, some of which was totally unexpected and novel, and some of which confirm our intuition as well as the work of others. The numerical bifurcation results obtained from applying the Library of Continuation Algorithms (LOCA) reveal a plethora of one, two, and higher codimension bifurcations. For a vertical or standing cantilever beam, bifurcations to buckled solutions (via symmetry breaking) and oscillating solutions are detected as a function of gravity and the fluid-structure interaction. The unfolding of these results as a function of the orientation of the beam compared to gravity is also revealed
