Non-oxide Ceramics such as silicon carbide have very unique properties, for example high toughness, thermal stability, wear resistant, and thermal shock resistance these properties make these ceramic fibers excellent for high temperature applications. Here we present the development of Silicon Carbide nanofibers utilizing a Polystyrene/Polycarbomethylsilane solution as the precursor materials. The Forcespinning ® was performed under a controlled nitrogen environment to prevent fiber oxidation. Characterization was conducted using scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show successful formation of high yield, long continuous bead-free nanofibers with diameters ranging from 280nm to 2 micron depending on the selected processing parameters. The sintered precursors show formation of SiC nanofibers with a beta phase crystalline structure and oxygen content below 15%

The growing citizen's demand to become involved in questions regarding city and land-use planning require paying attention to the cartography as a key and fundamental element in the communication process. In this regard, the main aim of this research has been to identify and propose a set of criteria in order to enhance the communicative capacity of urban planning maps, by facilitating their lecture and compression. In order to respond to the above, first a bibliographic review was performed to understand the cartographic language and identify which criteria could improve the cartographic communication aspect. Finally, this syntax or cartographic language (geometric dimensions, visual variables and perceptive properties) was applied to a specific environmental information of cartography of urban planning with the intention to propose the most adequate way from a communicative point of view.Peer Reviewe

Energy Management and Privacy in Smart Grids

Despite the importance of power systems in today’s societies, they suffer from aging infrastructure and need to improve the efficiency, reliability, and security. Two issues that significantly limit the current grid’s efficient energy delivery and consumption are: loadollowing generation dispatch, and energy theft. A loadollowing generation dispatch is usually employed in power systems, which makes continuous small changes so as to account for differences between the actual energy demand and the predicted values. This approach has led to an average utilization of energy generation capacity below 55% [49]. Moreover, energy theft causes several billion dollar losses to U.S. utility companies [31] [16], while in developing countries it can amount to 50% of the total energy delivered [48]. Recently, the Smart Grid has been proposed as a new electric grid to modernize current power grids and enhance its efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. Particularly, in the Smart Grid, a digital communication network is deployed to enable two-way communications between users and system operators. It thus makes it possible to shape the users’ load demand curves by means of demand response strategies. Additionally, in the Smart Grid, traditional meters will be replaced with cyber-physical devices, called smart meters, capable of recording and transmitting users’ real-time power consumption. Due to their monitoring capabilities, smart meters offer a great opportunity to detect energy theft in smart grids, but also raise serious concerns about users’ privacy. In this dissertation, we design optimal load scheduling schemes to enhance system efficiency, and develop energy theft detection algorithms that can preserve users’ privacy

Molecularly imprinted silica films prepared by electroassisted deposition for the selective detection of dopamine

Dopamine (DA) can be detected by electrochemical oxidation in conventional electrodes. However, the presence of other oxidizable species (interferents) usually present in physiological fluids at high concentrations (like ascorbic acid) makes very difficult its electrochemical detection. In the present work, glassy carbon electrodes have been modified with molecularly imprinted silica (MIS) films prepared by electroassisted deposition of sol–gel precursors. The production of MIS films was performed by adding the template molecule (DA) to the precursor sol. The molecular impression of silica was assessed showing a high coherency allowing a filtering capacity in the molecular scale. The MIS-modified electrodes present a high selectivity for the detection of DA in neutral or acidic solutions. The MIS-modified electrodes allow the amperometric determination of dopamine in solutions containing ascorbic acid with molar ratios lower than 1:50,000.We acknowledge the financial support from the Fundación Ramón Areces (CIVP16A1821), Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MAT2013-42007-P) and Generalitat Valenciana (PROMETEO2013/038)

Encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of iron (II, III) oxide ( Fe3O4) with a thermopolymeric shell of a crosslinked poly(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) P(MEO2MA) is successfully developed. Magnetic aggregates of large size, around 150–200 nm are obtained during the functionalization of the iron oxide NPs with vinyl groups by using 3-butenoic acid in the presence of a water soluble azo-initiator and a surfactant, at 70 °C. These polymerizable groups provide a covalent attachment of the P(MEO2MA) shell on the surface of the MNPs while a crosslinked network is achieved by including tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate in the precipitation polymerization synthesis. Temperature control is used to modulate the swelling-to-collapse transition volume until a maximum of around 21:1 ratio between the expanded: shrunk states (from 364 to 144 nm in diameter) between 9 and 49 °C. The hybrid Fe3O4@ P(MEO2MA) microgel exhibits a lower critical solution temperature of 21.9 °C below the corresponding value for P(MEO2MA) (bulk, 26 °C). The MEO2MA coating performance in the hybrid microgel is characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The content of preformed MNPs [up to 30.2 (wt%) vs. microgel] was established by thermogravimetric analysis while magnetic properties by vibrating sample magnetometry.Andalusian Knowledge AgencyEuropean Commission 291780Ministry of Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Junta de AndalucíaSpanish "Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad" PID2019-103938RB-I00 CTQ2017-86125-PJunta de Andalucía B-FQM-243-UGR18 P18-RT-2961CEI-Biotic CEI2013-MP-1

    Get PDF
