    Ikääntyvien liikunnanopettajien keinoja ylläpitää ammatillista osaamista ja työhyvinvointia

    This article examines resources that aging physical education (PE) teachers can use to maintain their professional skills and well-being at work throughout their careers. Theme interviews, which were conducted with six University of Jyväskylä graduate PE teachers over 55 years of age, identified that PE teachers develop their professional skills mainly by attending various short skill training courses. The transfer of the skills and knowledge learned in recreational sports activities to practical teaching was also seen as a significant way to develop PE teachers’ professional skills, while acquiring new expertise helped PE teachers modify their work and reform their work methods. This empowered and significantly increased PE teachers’ ability to cope with their workload and improved their well-being at work. Professional reflection with colleagues and other physical education experts was also assessed as a means of professional development. Interviewees were concerned about not being able to participate regularly in courses that promote their professional competence. Therefore, the recommendation for PE teachers’ professional development is to further utilise education and learning opportunities to best support their well-being at work throughout their careers.Tämän artikkelin tarkoituksena on tarkastella liikunnanopettajien keinoja ja mahdollisuuksia ylläpitää ammatillista osaamista ja edelleen työhyvinvointia työuransa aikana. Kuudelle Jyväskylän yliopistosta valmistuneelle yli 55-vuotiaalle liikunnanopettajalle tehdyn teemahaastattelun perusteella havaittiin, että opettajat kehittävät ammatillista osaamistaan pääosin lyhyiden täydennyskoulutuskurssien avulla. Haastatteluiden perusteella myös vapaa-ajan liikuntaharrastuksissa opittujen taitojen ja tietojen vieminen käytännön opetustyöhön nähtiin merkityksellisenä ammatillisen osaamisen kehittymisessä. Opittujen uusien taitojen myötä opettajien on mahdollista muokata omaa työtään ja uusiutua ammatillisesti. Tämä puolestaan voimaannuttaa opettajia ja vaikuttaa siten merkittävästi työssä jaksamiseen ja työhyvinvointiin. Myös muiden opettajien vertaistukea sekä liikunnan ammattilaisten kanssa käytävää ammatillista reflektointia pidettiin haastateltavien mielestä tärkeänä ammatillisen osaamisen kehittymisen mahdollistajana. Haastateltavat kokivat työurallaan ongelmalliseksi sen, että heidän ei ollut mahdollista osallistua säännöllisesti ammatillista osaamista kehittäviin liikunta-alan koulutuksiin. Opettajien ammatillisen kehittymisen kannalta olisikin merkityksellistä, että koulutuksia ja muita oppimismahdollisuuksia hyödynnettäisiin suunnitellusti koko työuran ajan.     Identifying childhood movement profiles and comparing differences in mathematical skills between clusters : A latent profile analysis

    The aims of this study were; 1) to identify different movement profiles in sixth graders, and 2) to investigate if there are differences in their mathematical basic (BasicMath) and problem solving (ProbSol) skills between existing movement profiles. The sample included 461 (223 girls, 238 boys) students with a mean age of 11.27 +/- .32 years from southern and middle Finland. A latent profile analysis (LPA) revealed four movement profiles: "poor movers", "average movers", "skilled movers" and "expert movers". These profiles differed substantially in their motor competence (MC) and health-related fitness (HRF). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) also revealed that "poor movers" and "average movers" obtained lower results in BasicMath comparing with "skilled movers". The results of this study suggest that cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, MC and BasicMath are interrelated.Peer reviewe

    Finnish students’ enjoyment and anxiety levels during fitness testing classes

    Background: Fitness testing is a commonly applied learning and teaching practice implemented in both secondary and elementary school physical education (PE). Many teachers believe that by using a variety of different tests, they are able to provide students with feedback regarding their fitness status, and furthermore, increase students’ willingness to be physically active later in their lives. However, empirical evidence concerning students’ affective responses during fitness testing classes is limited.Purpose: The primary aim of the study was to investigate whether students’ perceptions of enjoyment and anxiety differed between two different types of fitness testing classes and PE in general. In addition, the measurement invariances over time and between Grade 5 (aged 11–12) and Grade 8 (aged 14–15) groups were determined.Method: A total sample of 645 Finnish Grade 5 (N = 328, 50% boys, mean age = 11.2, SD = 0.36) and Grade 8 students (N = 317, 47% boys, mean age = 14.2, SD = 0.35) participated in the study. Series of multi-group confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to test the level of measurement invariance between general PE and fitness testing classes, and between age groups. Strict factorial invariance was supported for both enjoyment and anxiety scales allowing for latent mean comparisons. Latent mean differences were studied using z-tests.Results: Grade 5 students perceived significantly lower levels of enjoyment and cognitive processes and a higher level of somatic anxiety in fitness testing classes compared to general PE. Additionally, for Grade 8 students, levels of enjoyment and cognitive processes were significantly lower and somatic anxiety and worry higher in fitness testing classes than in general PE. Furthermore, enjoyment was significantly higher, and cognitive processes, somatic anxiety and worry lower among Grade 5 students compared with Grade 8 students in both contextual PE and during fitness testing class.Conclusion: Results of this study indicate that students’ perceptions of enjoyment were lower in fitness testing classes compared to PE in general. Additionally, students perceived lower levels of cognitive anxiety and higher levels of somatic anxiety in fitness testing classes than in general PE. It is noteworthy that students might not significantly dislike fitness testing per se but instead have significantly more positive affects towards PE in general. Generally, practitioners conducting fitness testing lessons are encouraged to embrace different strategies such as fostering basic psychological needs or promoting mastery climate to facilitate enjoyment and diminish anxiety.</p

    Life-course leisure-time physical activity trajectories in relation to health-related behaviors in adulthood : the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns study

    BackgroundEvidence on whether leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) facilitates individuals' adoption of multiple healthy behaviors remains scarce. This study investigated the associations of diverse longitudinal LTPA trajectories from childhood to adulthood with diet, screen time, smoking, binge drinking, sleep difficulties, and sleep duration in adulthood.MethodsData were drawn from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study. Participants were aged 9-18years (N=3553; 51% females) in 1980 and 33-49years at the latest follow-up in 2011. The LTPA trajectories were identified using a latent profile analysis. Differences in self-reported health-related behaviors across the LTPA trajectories were studied separately for women and men by using the Bolck-Croon-Hagenaars approach. Models were adjusted for age, body mass index, education level, marital status, total energy intake and previous corresponding behaviors.ResultsPersistently active, persistently low-active, decreasingly and increasingly active trajectories were identified in both genders and an additional inactive trajectory for women. After adjusting the models with the above-mentioned covariates, the inactive women had an unhealthier diet than the women in the other trajectories (p0.50). The low-active men followed an unhealthier diet than the persistently and increasingly active men (p0.50). Compared to their inactive and low-active peers, smoking frequency was lower in the increasingly active women and men (p0.20) and persistently active men (p0.20). The increasingly active men reported lower screen time than the low-active (p0.50) and persistently active (p0.20) men. The increasingly and persistently active women reported fewer sleep difficulties than the inactive (p0.80) and low-active (p0.50 and>0.80, respectively) women. Sleep duration and binge drinking were not associated with the LTPA trajectories in either gender, nor were sleep difficulties in men and screen time in women.ConclusionsNot only persistently higher LTPA but also an increasing tendency to engage in LTPA after childhood/adolescence were associated with healthier diet and lower smoking frequency in both genders, having less sleep difficulties in women and lower screen time in increasingly active men.     Predicting accelerometer-based physical activity in physical education and total physical activity: The Self-determination Theory approach

    The present study tested the motivational model of physical education (PE) including needs for competence, autonomy, social relatedness, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, in-class moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and total MVPA. Participants were 490 (264 girls, 226 boys) Finnish elementary school students. The data were collected using accelerometers and questionnaires for a seven-day period during the fall semester 2017. The key findings were that 1) social relatedness associated with total MVPA via in-class MVPA in girls, whereas competence was linked to in-class MVPA through extrinsic motivation in boys, 2) competence was positively linked to extrinsic motivation in a similar way in both girls and boys, 3) social relatedness and in-class MVPA were positively associated with total MVPA in both girls and boys, 4) competence, autonomy, and relatedness were positively linked to intrinsic motivation in girls when only competence and autonomy were related to intrinsic motivation in boys, and 5) in-class MVPA contributed 36% of total weekly MVPA minutes in the present sample. Although the indirect relationships between study variables did not fully support the existing PE motivational model, the direct associations showed that needs of competence, autonomy, relatedness could be promoted in PE classes to support intrinsic motivation, and total MVPA.This project was financially supported by The Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture and The Otto A.     Training Volume and Intensity of Physical Activity among Young Athletes: The Health Promoting Sports Club (HPSC) Study

    Both training volume and overall physical activity (PA) play a role in young athletes’ sports performance and athletic development. The purpose of this study was to describe the training volume and PA of young athletes in endurance, aesthetics, ball games, and power sports. Questionnaire data (n = 671) were obtained from 15-year-old Finnish athletes on sports participation, along with accelerometer data (n = 350) assessing the amount and intensity of their PA. The athletes’ mean weekly training volume was 11 h 41 min. Objectively assessed PA amounted to 4 h 31 min daily, out of which 1 h 31 min was at a level of moderate-to-vigorous intensity (MVPA). Among 24% of the athletes, the weekly training volume (in hours) exceeded the recommended level of age-in-years, which might increase their risk of sports injuries. At the same time, one in six athletes (16%) did not—on average—reach the internationally recommended threshold level of at least 60 minutes of MVPA per day. Compared to girls, boys averaged 2.5 more hours of training per week, and had 21 more minutes of MVPA per day. Moreover, boys had a higher goal orientation than girls, with 52% of the boys and only 29% of the girls focused on success at adult level. Although total training volume and PA did not differ among sports types, there were differences in training forms, and in the proportions of MVPA. The young athletes were found to vary greatly in training forms, training volumes, MVPA, and goal orientation; hence, training should be planned individually, both for team sports and individual sports.</p
