Ā© 2019 International Society for Chemotherapy of Infection and Cancer Objectives: This study explored antimicrobial stewardship programme (ASP) team membersā€™ perspectives regarding factors influencing the adoption and implementation of these programmes in Saudi hospitals. Methods: This was a qualitative study based on face-to-face semistructured interviews with healthcare professionals involved in ASPs and activities across three Ministry of Health (MoH) hospitals in Saudi Arabia (n = 18). Interviews were also conducted with two representatives of a General Directorate of Health Affairs in a Saudi region and two representatives of the Saudi MoH (n = 4) between Januaryā€“February 2017. Results: Despite the existence of a national strategy to implement ASPs in Saudi MoH hospitals, their adoption and implementation remains low. Hospitals have their own antimicrobial stewardship policies, but adherence to these is poor. ASP team members highlight that lack of enforcement of policies and guidelines from the MoH and hospital administration is a significant barrier to ASP adoption and implementation. Other barriers include disintegration of teams, poor communication, lack of recruitment/shortage of ASP team members, lack of education and training, and lack of health information technology (IT). Physiciansā€™ fears and concerns in relation to liability are also a barrier to their adoption of ASPs. Conclusion: This is the first qualitative study exploring barriers to ASP adoption and implementation in Saudi hospitals from the perspective of ASP team members. Formal endorsement of ASPs from the MoH as well as hospital enforcement of policies and provision of human and health IT resources would improve the adoption and implementation of ASPs in Saudi hospitals

Hepatoprotective effect of taurine and coenzyme Q10 and their combination against acrylamide-induced oxidative stress in rats

    Get PDF
Purpose: To clarify the protective effects of Taurine (TA) and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) for mitigation of acrylamide- induced oxidative damage. .Method: Acrylamide (AA), TA and CoQ10 were administered orally to rats for 2 and 4 weeks. Sixty albino rats of either sex weighing 200 Ā± 5 were randomly divided into five groups; control group, AA group, AA+ TA group, AA+ CoQ10 group and AA+ TA+ CoQ10 Group ( 15, 500 and 200 mg/kg/day dose, respectively). Hepatoprotection was assessed. The level of hepatic marker enzymes including serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) were evaluated. The proinflammatory cytokines including serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-Ī± (TNF- Ī±), interleukin- 1Ī² (IL- 1Ī²) and interleukin-6(IL-6) were assessed. The levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in liver homogenate were also performed. Results: TA or CoQ10 significantly decreased (p < 0.05) the elevation of hepatic markers (LDH, AST and ALT) induced by AA in rats. Reduction of serum proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-Ī±, IL- 1Ī² and IL-6) were also observed compared to AA group, and it was a time-effect relationship. Treatment with TA or CoQ10 also significantly reduced the oxidative stress induced by AA as shown by an increase in GSH level, and reduction of MDA level and MPO activities compared to rats treated with AA alone (p < 0.05). The hepatoprotective effect of both TA and CoQ10 combination was more efficient than the effect of either of them alone. Conclusion: The combination of TA and Co Q10 possesses a good potential to inhibit oxidative stress from liver and also exhibits anti-inflammatory activity. Thus, they have the potential to be used to mitigate AA- induced liver injury. Keywords: Taurine, Coenzyme Q10, Acrylamide, Oxidative stress, Biochemical profile, Proinflammatory cytokine

Evaluation of the efficacy of oral ivermectin in comparison with ivermectinā€“metronidazole combined therapy in the treatment of ocular and skin lesions of Demodex folliculorum

    Get PDF
SummaryObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin and combined ivermectinā€“metronidazole therapy in the treatment of ocular and skin lesions of Demodex folliculorum.MethodsOne hundred twenty patients with skin lesions and anterior blepharitis, whose infestation was treatment-resistant and who had a Demodex count >5 mites/cm2 for skin lesions or ā‰„3 mites at the root of each eyelash, were recruited. The treatment regimens were ivermectin and ivermectinā€“metronidazole combined therapy. We enrolled 15 patients from each of four groups for each treatment regimen. Demodex was detected by standardized skin surface biopsy for skin lesions. Three eyelashes from each affected lower eyelid were epilated and examined. The study subjects were followed-up once a week for four visits.ResultsThere was a difference in the mite count between the subgroups taking ivermectin and combined therapy during all follow-up visits. At the last visit, in the combined therapy subgroup, 1.7% of patients showed no clinical improvement, 26.7% showed a marked clinical improvement, and 71.6% showed complete remission. In those on the ivermectin regimen, 27 patients had a mite count >5 mites/cm2, 21.7% showed no clinical improvement, 33.3% showed a marked improvement, and 45% showed complete remission.ConclusionsCombined therapy was superior in decreasing the D. folliculorum count in all groups and in reducing the mite count to the normal level in rosacea and in anterior blepharitis. On the other hand, the two regimens were comparable in reducing the mite count to the normal level in acne and peri-oral dermatitis lesions

The Legitimacy of Cloning under the Jordanian Law

Two decades ago, a female sheep called (Dolly) was cloned. Cloning the latter sheep attracted a global attention. It indicated that humans can be successfully cloned. Peopleā€™s attitudes towards cloning differ. For instance, there are people who believe that cloning is legitimate and others who believe that itā€™s not. Others have neutral attitudes towards cloning. Due to such a scientific discovery, many countries ā€“ especially European countries ā€“ enacted legislations that govern cloning. Some of those legislations legitimize cloning, whereas others donā€™t. However, the Arab and Islamic countries are still in need to enact legislations that govern cloning. There are political factors that affect countriesā€™ views about the legitimacy of cloning. Therefore, there are countries that have cooperated with one another in terms of setting legislations that govern cloning. There are also countries that have cooperated in identifying the definition, types and legitimacy of cloning.Ā  Due to the difference between countries in terms of religion, and political views, countries differ in their views about the legitimacy of cloning. The researchers of the present study recommend enacting national legislations that govern cloning and its legitimacy by the Jordanian legislator.
