Experimental identification of dynamic coefficients of lightly loaded tilting-pad bearings under several lubrication regimes

Get PDF
This paper presents the identified dynamic coefficients of a lightly loaded actively lubricated bearing under three lubrication regimes: passive, hybrid and feedback-controlled. The goal is to experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of modifying the bearing dynamic properties via active lubrication. Dominated by the latest two regimes, the bearing properties become adjustable or controllable due to the injection of either a constant or variable pressurized oil flow. Such a flow is regulated by a hydraulic control system composed of (a) a high-pressure oil supply unit, (b) servovalves, (c) radial injection nozzles, (d) displacement sensors and (e) well-tuned digital controllers. A scaled-down industrial rotor featuring active lubrication, composed of a flexible rotor supported by a four-rocker load-between-pads tilting-pad bearing under light load condition, is used for this objective. The experimental identification is performed by means of measured frequency response functions and a rotor finite element model. Predicted coefficients are also provided for benchmarking. Comparing results between the different regimes, presented along with their expanded uncertainty, provides the experimental evidence of the bearing properties modification via active lubrication.</jats:p

Aortic Arch Reconstruction Using Nonvalved Femoral Vein Homograft in High-Risk Neonates

Get PDF
Aortic arch obstruction is often present with complex concomitant congenital heart defects (CHDs). The use of nonvalved femoral vein homograft (FVH) to reconstruct the aortic arch has distinct surgical advantages, including simplified reconstruction. We present an intraoperative video of a Yasui procedure utilizing FVH for aortic reconstruction in a 12-day-old (2.2 kg) neonate with right ventricular outflow tract obstruction, malalignment ventricular septal defect, aortic valve atresia, aortic arch hypoplasia, atrial septal defect, and ductal dependent systemic circulation. Further, we report outcomes for a series of three additional neonatal patients with complex CHD and aortic arch obstruction who underwent FVH arch reconstruction

Intestinal Immunomodulation and Shifts on the Gut Microbiota of BALB/c Mice Promoted by Two Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus Strains Isolated from Human Samples

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis IPLA 20020 and Lactobacillus gasseri IPLA 20212, two strains isolated from human samples, were evaluated for safety and influence over the intestinal microbiota and cytokine production by the intestinal tissue of adult BALB/c mice. Mice were divided into four groups receiving during 8 days PBS or a suspension of each strain, prepared fresh or lyophilized (bifidobacteria), at an amount of 4x108 viable cells/day. This dose could be comparable to the probiotic intake of a human adult who consumed about 100-200 mL of functional fermented milk per day, considering the usual level of probiotics in commercial products. No microbial translocation to liver or alterations in food intake, weight, and behavior were observed in treated mice. Intestinal content of secretory immunoglobulin A (s-IgA) was not affected, discarding any adverse effect on the mucosa-associated immunity. The profile of intestinal proinflammatory/regulatory cytokines after intervention evidenced that the microbial strain administered and its cellular state (fresh or lyophilized) as well as the host tissue analyzed (small or large intestine) influenced the immune response and suggests a moderate shift towards a T helper 1 profile (Th1) in the large intestine after the administration of both strains. Changes on relative levels of some intestinal microbial groups were evidenced after intervention. It is noteworthy that butyrate was positively associated with a balanced pro-Th1 immune response. Therefore, B. animalis subsp. lactis IPLA20020 and L. gasseri IPLA 20212 could be considered potential probiotic candidates to be included in functional foods for balancing the intestinal immune response.Fil: Nogacka, Alicja M.. TiO2:Cex onto Al Clays for Photocatalytic Solar Water Disinfection

Get PDF
A novel methodology was employed to prepare new nanocomposites with photocatalytic properties based on Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles arranged over a layered silicate. The catalysts were porous materials formed by exfoliated silicate layers surrounded by anatase nanoparticles. In this way, the anatase was doped by different amounts of Ce, yielding to catalysts with light absorption properties on the visible region. The photocatalytic behavior was tested for different reactions: adsorption and photocatalysis, showing outstanding and promising results for the removal of bacteria by using solar light as an energy source. The influence of the physicochemical properties of the catalyst and the reaction parameters will be studied in detail to manage new catalysts for the disinfection of drinking water

Desplazamiento de conidias de Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae en columnas de tres series de suelo

The fungus Metarhizium anisopliae isolationQu-M270 is a promising control agent for the wheat white grub( Hylamorpha elegans Burm.), a Chilean scarabeid species whose larvae feed on roots of diverse crops and move in soil up to a depth of 25 cm. In this study, the vertical movement of Qu- M270 conidias suspended in water was evaluated in three soil series from the B\uedo-B\uedo Region (36뀲' S lat; 71끕' W long), Chile. Soil was obtained using PVC pipes 30 cm long by 20 cm in diameter. Conidia recovery was performed in a specific medium for Metarhizium anisopliae, by counting colony forming units in 1 g of dry soil. The Quella series (Aquic Durixerets) was more restrictive to the percolation of conidia, which were concentrated at the first 10 cm. With the Arenales series (Dystric Xeropsamments), conidia were found below 15 cm and in percolated liquids. On the other hand, the Mirador series (Ultic Palexeralf) had a uniform distribution of conidia at every depth. Sur; 71끕' long. Oeste), Chile.
