Teachers\u27 perceptions of professional learning communities in public schools on Saipan

    Get PDF
School improvement in varying degrees and stages requires change. In order for schools to become successful, they must work toward building communities of learning and empowering teachers to lead this change. One way schools can build communities of learning is through the model of the professional learning community (PLC). The only way schools will improve is through the collaboration that takes place in learning communities. One of the purposes of this study was to explore the connections between schools functioning as PLCs and increases in student achievement, as recommended in Grider\u27s (2008) work. The participating schools worked together as PLCs since 2005. High school teachers have significantly lower mean perception scores than either elementary or junior high school teachers. Filipino teachers have significantly higher mean perception scores than either Caucasian or teachers from other ethnic-racial backgrounds. Pacific Islander teachers had significantly higher mean perception scores than Caucasian teachers. Years of teaching experience was only related to the teacher\u27s level of agreement. Female teachers had significantly higher levels of agreement. Older teachers had significantly higher levels of agreement. Elementary teachers had significantly higher levels of agreement. Future research should examine relationships among teachers\u27 perceptions at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels. Continued professional development is recommended for elementary, junior high, and high schools in the areas that teachers responded to least favorably. Further research should be conducted to examine the relationships among teachers\u27 perceptions based on ethnicity, gender, and age. More professional development is recommended to improve teacher relationships as they relate to ethnicity, gender, and age and to increase awareness and improve skills in cultural proficiency and sensitivity. Future research can include a study to determine the impact of school leadership on PLCs, parent perceptions of PLCs in their schools, and to examine elementary and junior high schools\u27 implementation of PLCs compared to high schools. It is the hope that by improving upon the professional development activities and experiences for all teachers, teachers\u27 perceptions about the degree to which their schools function as PLCs will be determined by improved practices in teaching and learning

Effects of posture regulation on mood states, heart rate and test performance in children

    Get PDF
This experiment aimed to investigate the effects of seated posture regulation on children’s psychological and physiological state and test performance. Thirty-eight boys (mean age: 12.3 ± 0.53 years) participated in both upright and normal posture conditions in a within-participants design. Participants completed a two-dimensional mood scale to measure psychological mood states and performed three tests (calculation, listening comprehension and word memory). Heart rate, as an index of physiological arousal state, was measured. Upright posture resulted in greater vitality and pleasure, as well as increased heart rate, compared with normal posture. Upright posture also led to significantly higher scores for calculation and listening comprehension tests. Moreover, increases in vitality level positively influenced increases in calculation and listening comprehension test scores. This study suggests that adopting an upright posture results in maintaining a positive psychological state and improving test performance of children

The role of mindfulness in performance and mental health among Japanese athletes: An examination of the relationship between alexithymic tendencies, burnout, and performance

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between mindfulness, alexithymia, burnout, and performance efficacy among athletes by means of a longitudinal survey. Participants were 125 university athletes (74 men, 50 women, 1 unknown gender; mean age: 19.84 years, SD = 1.04) who completed a survey comprising the Athlete Mindfulness Questionnaire, Sport Alexithymia Scale, Burnout Scale for University Athletes, and Psychological Performance Efficacy Scale (on which they assessed both themselves and a teammate) at three time points separated by two-month intervals. Mindfulness was found to be negatively correlated with burnout, both directly and in an indirect relationship mediated by alexithymic tendencies; mindfulness was also positively and directly associated with self-evaluation of performance, and indirectly positively associated with performance as evaluated by a teammate, via burnout. Structural equation modeling showed that the hypothesized model represented an acceptable fit to the data, based on several indices. Our findings suggest that mindfulness may help to enhance performance and reduce future burnout among athletes

Improvement of the ability to recover balance through versatile kinesthetic learning experiences

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present study was to compare learners' movement variability while maintaining balance and the ability to recover balance using the kinesthetic-experiential learning (KEL) method of implicit learning and the model-mastery learning (MML) method of explicit learning. The participants were 29 healthy university students. They were randomly divided into two groups (KEL and MML). They were required to balance both knees on an exercise ball. The balancing time and the ability to recover their balance were measured using motion capture. Results indicated that balancing time was significantly improved for both learning methods. Regarding the learners' movements while maintaining balance, they maintained balance while moving in the KEL method, whereas they maintained balance by keeping the entire body stationary in the MML method. Concerning the ability to recover, the KEL method improved the balance recovery ability more effectively than the MML method. Therefore, we concluded that using the KEL method at the initial stage of learning improves learners' balance recovery ability and increases movement variability
