    Facile electrochemical intramolecular amination of urea-tethered terminal alkenes for the synthesis of cyclic ureas

    Facile intramolecular amination of unactivated alkenes has been achieved by using electricity as a catalyst that helps to generate an intermediate and accelerates formation of cyclic ureas in high yields. Using this method, no metal catalysts were used. During electrolysis, a nitrogen radical was formed at the urea substrate that cyclized with the alkene and generated a terminal carbon radical which further formed a bond with the 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl radical (TEMPO). This method of electrolysis not only gives cyclic ureas but also functionalizes terminal unactivated alkenes. This method can be considered to be environmentally friendly given that it avoids the issues of toxicity or complicated metal ligands and could therefore be potentially employed in green chemistry

    An Analysis of Relationship between Remittances and Inflation in Pakistan

    Remittances play a signifi cant role in the economic development of recipient economy through different micro and macroeconomic channels. However, the adverse impact of remittances in the form of Dutch disease and infl ation cannot be overlooked. This study aims to examine the impact of remittance on infl ation and its different categories, namely, food infl ation, footwear and textile infl ation, housing and construction infl ation. Accordingly, four vectors have been formulized to capture the determinants of overall infl ation and its different categories with particular focus on remittances. The study employed Johansen (1990) and Johansen & Juselius (1990) cointegration technique to check the existence of long run relationship between remittances and infl ation. Vector Error Correction technique is further applied to examine the extent and direction of relationship between variables and to check the stability of models. The results indicated the existence of one cointegrated vector for all equations. Moreover, remittances, money supply and real per capita income are found to have positive impact on infl ation and its different categories. The results revealed that among different infl ation categories food infl ation is most effected and housing & construction infl ation is least effected by remittances. Budget defi cit is signifi cant in reducing foot wear and textile infl ation only. On the other hand trade openness is effective in reducing all types of infl ation by same magnitude and strength. Given the infl ationary nature of remittances it becomes necessary for government o channelize the remitted funds into productive investment to avoid surge in demand pull infl ation

    The synthetic routes for C‐N3 bond formation through a radical mechanism with the use of transition metals provide efficient diazide products, which can be further applied in many transformations to synthesize various valuable nitrogen‐containing compounds of pharmaceutical interest. The reported methods evidence stoichiometric heavy metals and toxic reagents (as N3‐source) and generally exhibit a limited substrate scope. However, the electrochemical diazidations are found to be environmentally friendly and very simple, while also providing a highly efficient way to synthesize 1,2‐diazide derivatives. Moreover, they provide a smart alternative for easy access to 1,2‐diamines, which can be used for future modern syntheses

    Green HRM and Sustainable Performance in Malaysian Hotels: The Role of Employees\u27 Pro-Environmental Attitudes and Green Behaviors

    Due to the business complexity and competitive environment, hotels are paying great attention to improve their sustainability performance through greening their workforce. Thus, this study examines the role of Green HRM practices in attaining sustainable environmental performance in Malaysian hotels while considering the crucial role of employees\u27 pro-environmental attitudes, green behaviors, and green work climate perceptions. Data were collected from the employees who were directly engaged in implementing green practices in selected hotels. A survey questionnaire was used for data collection, and about 350 responses were received and applied for analysis through PLS-SEM. Findings revealed that Green HRM practices (green training and involvement, green performance management and compensation) positively and significantly influence employees\u27 pro-environmental attitudes, further promoting green behaviors. It was also found that employees\u27 green behaviors are the key contributors to spurring sustainable hotel performance. Therefore, this study might support decision-makers in understanding the role of Green HR practices in greening the workforce in the hospitality industry context

    Easy access to crystalline indolines via hydrogen bond transfer

    Several indoline derivatives with specific geometries are biologically active and have inhibitor properties. Many indolines are a key part of natural products. Much attention has been focused on the development of synthetic routes for their easy access. Current synthesis depends largely on metal catalysis, iodine reagents, and Oxone. To date, no synthetic route has been established that is metal‐free, reagent‐free, and environmentally friendly and provides a base for green chemistry. Here, we report the first facile metal‐free and reagent‐free synthesis of indoline derivatives, which could potentially be influential in the design of new biologically active compounds. The synthesis proceeds through intramolecular amination between a urea nucleophile and unactivated alkene. The ring closure occurs in a few hours in the presence of pre‐dried silica gel and gives good yields of indolines products, but in the absence of silica gel, the ring closure occurred overnight with stirring in dry solvent. An electron withdrawing group at the substituted aryl moiety of ureas increases the hydrogen bond donor ability of substrates that mediate the internal proton transfer at the terminal alkene and results in facile amination to give the indoline product with an “in plane” orientation of the carbonyl group and aromatic part of indoline framework. Such orientation in indolines is important for potent biological activities

    Clinical and electrophysiological efficacy of leaf extract of Gingko biloba L (Ginkgoaceae) in subjects with diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy

    Purpose: To investigate the health benefits of Gingko biloba L. leave extract EGb 761 in patients with diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSP).Method: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo trial, patients (n = 156) received Gingko biloba (120 mg/day) or placebo for 6 months. Efficacy of Gingko biloba extract EGb 761 was assessed on the reduction in the scores of “Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire” (SF-MPQ) and improvements in latency, amplitude and conduction velocity of four sensory (ulnar, median, peroneal and sural) and four motor (ulnar, median, peroneal and tibial) nerves.Results: Gingko biloba significantly improved the mean scores of sensory, affective, visual analogue score (VAS) and present pain intensity (PPI) of SF-MPQ on 3 and 6 month post-treatment. At the start of experiment in the Gingko biloba-treated group, scores for sensory, affective, VAS and PPI domains were 12.90 ± 7.21, 4.40 ± 1.79, 4.38 ± 1.69 and 3.24 ± 0.78 respectively. After 6-months treatment with Gingko biloba, scores for sensory, affective, VAS and PPI domains were reduced (p < 0.01) to 7.24 ± 4.91, 3.11 ± 1.81, 3.37 ± 1.35 and 2.45 ± 0.65 respectively. Contrarily, in the placebo-administered group, sensory domain was (p < 0.01) deteriorated after 6 month (4.70 ± 1.87) compared to the baseline (4.04 ± 1.67). Gingko biloba extract EGb 761 failed to influence the electrophysiological measures when compared with the placebo group. The common adverse effects observed with Gingko biloba were somnolence and dryness of mouth compared with the placebo-treated patientsConclusion: Gingko biloba extract EGb 761 seems to be an effective and safe drug for reducing symptoms of DSP without any apparent effect on the electrophysiological attributes of sensorimotor nerves.Keywords: Diabetic polyneuropathy, Diabetes mellitus, Electrophysiological parameters, Gingko biloba, Sensorimotor nerves, Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnair

    A Sociological Study about the Adoption of Contraception Methods and Their Effects on the Married Females’ Health in Rural Areas of Tehsil Dera Ghazi Khan-Pakistan

    Population is growing rapidly & adoption of FP has been neglected by Govt. of Pakistan due to lack of services, awareness and education, traditional believes, employment & misconception. Mostly people think that the use of contraception methods is against the nature and Islam and is also harmful for health. So present study was designed in rural areas of Tehsil Dera Ghazi Khan in 2013 to investigate the knowledge level, adoption of contraception as well as to perceived positive and negative effects of contraception methods on the health of married females in rural community. 160 rural married females were interviewed to find out their demographic features; utilization of contraception and its side effects on their health in tehsil Dera Ghazi Khan. The data was analyzed by using Uni-variate (frequency distribution and percentage) and Bi-variate analysis (Chi square and Gamma Statistics) was carried out. Predominating age categories were <15 and 16-20 years, 45.6% were illiterate, and 55.6% had good mutual understandings. More than one fifth (26.2%) had 1-2 pregnancies, 59.4% had sometimes heard about contraceptive methods while 84.4% had favorable attitude towards adoption of contraception methods. Whereas 58.1% had sometimes used contraceptive methods, 31.9% got information about contraceptive methods from relatives. In adoption of different contraception methods during the life span, respondents reported both types i.e. modern injections (60.6%), spermicides (50.6%), and in traditional methods i.e. withdrawal (6.2%); adoption of herbs (5.7%) and 44.4% had faced positive effects while 19.4% faced negative effects whereas 36.2% of the respondents had both type of effects (positive/ negative) on their health after the adoption of FP methods during reproductive span. Bi-variate analysis showed positive relationship between desired of family size and utilization of contraception, Freedom of decision making vs utilization of contraception methods and mutual understanding of spouse vs adoption of contraception method. There was a need to bring positive change in societal attitude for the utilization of family planning.     Effects of antiplatelet therapy on stroke risk by brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases: subgroup analyses of the RESTART randomised, open-label trial

    Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage.     Colo-Pro: a pilot randomised controlled trial to compare standard bolus-dosed cefuroxime prophylaxis to bolus-continuous infusion–dosed cefuroxime prophylaxis for the prevention of infections after colorectal surgery

    Standard bolus-dosed antibiotic prophylaxis may not inhibit growth of antibiotic resistant colonic bacteria, a cause of SSIs after colorectal surgery. An alternative strategy is continuous administration of antibiotic throughout surgery, maintaining concentrations of antibiotics that inhibit growth of resistant bacteria. This study is a pilot comparing bolus-continuous infusion with bolus-dosed cefuroxime prophylaxis in colorectal surgery. This is a pilot randomised controlled trial in which participants received cefuroxime bolus-infusion (intervention arm) targeting free serum cefuroxime concentrations of 64 mg/L, or 1.5 g cefuroxime as a bolus dose four-hourly (standard arm). Patients in both arms received metronidazole (500 mg intravenously). Eligible participants were adults undergoing colorectal surgery expected to last for over 2 h. Results were analysed on an intention-to-treat basis. The study was successfully piloted, with 46% (90/196) of eligible patients recruited and 89% (80/90) of participants completing all components of the protocol. A trialled bolus-continuous dosing regimen was successful in maintaining free serum cefuroxime concentrations of 64 mg/L. No serious adverse reactions were identified. Rates of SSIs (superficial and deep SSIs) were lower in the intervention arm than the standard treatment arm (24% (10/42) vs. 30% (13/43)), as were infection within 30 days of operation (41% (17/43) vs 51% (22/43)) and urinary tract infections (2% (1/42) vs. 9% (4/43)). These infection rates can be used to power future clinical trials. This study demonstrates the feasibility of cefuroxime bolus-continuous infusion of antibiotic prophylaxis trials, and provides safety data for infusions targeting free serum cefuroxime concentrations of 64 mg/L.
