A decade of solar Type III radio bursts observed by the Nancay Radioheliograph 1998-2008

We present a statistical survey of almost 10 000 radio Type III bursts observed by the Nancay Radioheliograph from 1998 to 2008, covering nearly a full solar cycle. In particular, sources sizes, positions, and fluxes were examined. We find an east-west asymmetry in source positions which could be attributed to a 6(+/-)1 degree eastward tilt of the magnetic field, that source FWHM sizes s roughly follow a solar-cycle averaged distribution dN/ds = 14 {\nu}^{-3.3} s^{-4} arcmin^{-1} day^{-1}, and that source fluxes closely follow a solar-cycle averaged dN/dS_{\nu} = 0.34 {\nu}^{-2.9} S_{\nu}^{-1.7} sfu^{-1} day^{-1} distribution (when {\nu} is in GHz, s in arcmin, and S_{\nu} in sfu). Fitting a barometric density profile yields a temperature of 0.6 MK, while a solar wind-like (\propto h^{-2}) density profile yields a density of 1.2x10^6 cm^{-3} at an altitude of 1 RS, assuming harmonic emission. Finally, we found that the solar-cycle averaged radiated Type III energy could be similar in magnitude to that radiated by nanoflares via non-thermal bremsstrahlung processes, and we hint at the possibility that escaping electron beams might carry as much energy away from the corona as is introduced into it by accelerated nanoflare electrons.Comment: 22 pages, 18 figure

Background: Lack of education of HIV still impact rural Indian populations. According to the AIDS virus education research fund, India accounts for the third highest burden of HIV/AIDS population in the world. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between income, education and knowledge, and perceptions of HIV/AIDS among pregnant rural women in Mysore, India. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted between 2011 and 2014 among 664 pregnant women. The women were provided an informed consent and answered an interviewer-administered questionnaire on HIV knowledge and perceptions in the Kannada language. The participants underwent routine antenatal care services and were followed up after delivery, at 6 months and 12 months. Descriptive and chi-square analyses were computed using SPSS 23. Results: The mean age was 21±3.0 years old. 98.9% were Hindu, 1.1% were Muslim. 5.6% had no education, 33.7% had a primary school education, and 60.7% had more than a primary school education. 66.9% of the low income and 33.1% were middle to high income. 88% of women with more than primary school education correctly identified syringe and needles sharing as a risk factor for HIV/AIDS transmission, In the 12-knowledge questionnaire, those who score 0-5 were considered to have low knowledge, 6-8 is medium knowledge, and 9-12 is high knowledge. 76.2% (p\u3c0.005) of women with more than a primary school education scored highly on the knowledge questions as opposed to 1% from those with no education. 65.8% (p\u3c0.005) of women with more than a primary school education held positive attitudes about HIV as opposed to 34.2% from middle to no education

Libraries and College Readiness: The Bronx Community College Library High School Collaborative

In today’s information-rich global economy, City University of New York (CUNY) graduates need strong critical thinking skills. Over three quarters of the students who enroll across CUNY’s 24 campuses are drawn from schools in the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) (Strang, 2014). The NYCDOE, the largest public school system in the United States, serving over 1 million students (Strang, 2014). Unfortunately, many of the students who matriculate to CUNY’s college and universities are underprepared for college-level work. This is especially the case with students who attend high schools throughout the Bronx, one of New York City’s five boroughs. Most of the high schools throughout the Bronx are within the Bronx Community College (BCC) district. One area in particular that many students need additional support and development in is information literacy skills, a set of literacy skills known to be essential for their academic success. Information literacy skills include students’ abilities to think critically about the information they encounter online and in print; to evaluate information for its authority, timeliness, accuracy, bias, and appropriateness; and to evaluate the ethical use of information

Aligning the Curriculums for College Success: High School and College Library Collaborations

In today’s highly competitive global economy, City University of New York (CUNY) graduates need strong critical thinking skills. More New York City students than ever before are applying to college and enrolling into CUNY schools. This is especially the case with high schools throughout the Bronx, a good portion of these schools are feeder schools for Bronx Community College (BCC). Unfortunately, many of the students who matriculate into BCC come un-prepared for college level work, where information literacy skills are essential. A strong body of published scholarly literature discusses the importance of information literacy instruction at the high school level, as it relates to college readiness. In an ideal secondary education system, students receive instruction on how to think critically, how to evaluate information, and how to avoid plagiarism; these are essential skills that are necessary for college academic success. As the library liaison for the BCC First Year Seminar program, I encounter many students who are in need of academic remediation because they lack research skills. In addition to the lack of information literacy skills, we discovered that a substantial number of students who matriculate into BCC come unprepared for the critical thinking required for college level STEM courses

Socioeconomic Status as a Predictor of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

While epidemiological research has generated new knowledge about the treatment and prevention of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) through smoking secession, the socioeconomic status (SES) of people with the disease has been under investigated. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the predictability of association between SES and COPD. This study was based on the ecological theory, which states that health and disease may have multiple underlying factors. This study was a secondary analysis of archived data from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). The dataset was collected for the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) study. Variables were measured at the nominal, ordinal, and continuous levels. In this cross-sectional quantitative analysis, logistic regression was used to inform the research questions. The results showed that neither education, income, nor occupation was a predictor of COPD. The logistic regression reported the significance of the predictability of education, income, and occupation to be Ï? = 1.000, Ï? = .498, Ï? = .581, respectively, with odd ratios and confidence interval of 1.007 (.987, 1.028), 1.018 (.948, 1.094), 1.429 (.684, 2.988). Neither education, income, nor occupation yielded a significant statistic value for a Ï? Ë? .05 or a p Ë? .01. These non-significant results regarding the relationship between the SES of a person and COPD reaffirmed that cigarette smoking remains the known determinant of the disease. The social implications of these research findings are that more stringent laws and mandates need to be enacted to discourage easy access to the proven determining factor of COPD: cigarettes smoking
