Rehabilitating The Artificial Ponds With Geosynthetic Clay Liners - A Case Study

    Get PDF
Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) offer engineers, owners and contractors safe and mostly economic solutions to everyday engineering challenges encountered particularly in hydraulic engineering applications and especially in the liquid and waste landfill barrier systems. These elements assure the durability of the structure and at the same time prevent leakage. Although still today most of the liquid containment facilities are composed of compacted clay liners and some asphalt or concrete paving, GCLs have slowly started to gain rapid acceptance in lakes, ponds and sewage lagoon projects. One of the use of this Geosynthetic product in a water containment pond at the recreation area in Homeros Valley, Bornova, Izmir is reported in this study. Some key parameters of GCLs and its comparison with similar products in the engineering field is stated. The paper ends with the field performance of GCLs using some other related case studies with an outlook on further developments

High quality copy number and genotype data from FFPE samples using Molecular Inversion Probe (MIP) microarrays

BACKGROUND:A major challenge facing DNA copy number (CN) studies of tumors is that most banked samples with extensive clinical follow-up information are Formalin-Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE). DNA from FFPE samples generally underperforms or suffers high failure rates compared to fresh frozen samples because of DNA degradation and cross-linking during FFPE fixation and processing. As FFPE protocols may vary widely between labs and samples may be stored for decades at room temperature, an ideal FFPE CN technology should work on diverse sample sets. Molecular Inversion Probe (MIP) technology has been applied successfully to obtain high quality CN and genotype data from cell line and frozen tumor DNA. Since the MIP probes require only a small (~40 bp) target binding site, we reasoned they may be well suited to assess degraded FFPE DNA. We assessed CN with a MIP panel of 50,000 markers in 93 FFPE tumor samples from 7 diverse collections. For 38 FFPE samples from three collections we were also able to asses CN in matched fresh frozen tumor tissue.RESULTS:Using an input of 37 ng genomic DNA, we generated high quality CN data with MIP technology in 88% of FFPE samples from seven diverse collections. When matched fresh frozen tissue was available, the performance of FFPE DNA was comparable to that of DNA obtained from matched frozen tumor (genotype concordance averaged 99.9%), with only a modest loss in performance in FFPE.CONCLUSION:MIP technology can be used to generate high quality CN and genotype data in FFPE as well as fresh frozen samples. This item is part of the UA Faculty Publications collection. ObjectiveTo evaluate growth, tolerance and safety outcomes with use of an extensively hydrolyzed casein-based formula (eHCF) in infants with cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA).MethodsA total of 226 infants (mean ± SD age: 106.5 ± 39.5 days, 52.7% were girls) with CMPA who received eHCF comprising at least half of the daily dietary intake were included. Data on anthropometrics [weight for age (WFA), length for age (LFA) and weight for length (WFL) z-scores] were recorded at baseline (visit 1), while data on infant feeding and stool records, anthropometrics and Infant Feeding and Stool Patterns and Formula Satisfaction Questionnaires were recorded at visit 2 (on Days 15 ± 5) and visit 3 (on Days 30 ± 5).ResultsFrom baseline to visit 2 and visit 3, WFA z-scores (from −0.60 ± 1.13 to −0.54 ± 1.09 at visit 2, and to −0.44 ± 1.05 at visit 3, p < 0.001) and WFL z-scores (from −0.80 ± 1.30 to −0.71 ± 1.22 at visit 2, and to −0.64 ± 1.13 at visit 3, p = 0.002) were significantly increased. At least half of infants never experienced irritability or feeding refusal (55.7%) and spit-up after feeding (50.2%). The majority of mothers were satisfied with the study formula (93.2%), and wished to continue using it (92.2%).ConclusionsIn conclusion, eHCF was well-accepted and tolerated by an intended use population of infants  ≤ 6 months of age with CMPA and enabled adequate volume consumption and improved growth indices within 30 days of utilization alongside a favorable gastrointestinal tolerance and a high level of parental satisfaction

Preventing depressive symptoms in school children

This thesis describes two studies which investigated the effectiveness of the Depression Prevention Program (DPP) in preventing depressive symptoms in children. The DPP is a group intervention which teaches children cognitive-behavioral and social problem-solving techniques. In the first study, we followed 69 fifth and sixth grade children at risk for depression, for two years after they participated in the DPP. We compared these children to 50 children in a no treatment control group. The prevention group reported significantly fewer depressive symptoms through the two year follow-up. There was evidence for long term relief from depressive symptoms in children who initially reported depressive symptoms, as well as evidence for prevention of depressive symptoms in children who initially reported few or no symptoms. The prevention program also improved children\u27s explanatory style. The effects of the prevention program grew over time after the completion of the program. The second study had two goals. The first goal was to replicate the initial results of the DPP. The second goal was to test the effects of adding a parent component to the DPP. Ninety-four 5th and 6th grade children were assigned to one of three groups: Child-and-Parent, Child-Only, and Control. Children in the Child-and-Parent condition participated in the DPP. Their parents participated in a separate group for parents. Children in the Child-Only condition participated in the DPP. Their parents did not participate in the parent groups. Control children and parents did not participate in any groups. The DPP was successful at relieving depressive symptoms and preventing symptoms through a 6 month follow-up. Inclusion of the parent component did not significantly improve the program\u27s prevention effect, and there was some evidence that the parent component may in fact have reduced this effect

Hypothenar hammer syndrome: a case series and literature review

Objectives: This study aims to report our experience regarding patients who were surgically treated due to hypothenar hammer syndrome and review the related literature. Patients and methods: The study included 11 hands of eight patients (5 males, 3 females; mean age 48 years; range 29 to 60 years) who underwent surgery due to hypothenar hammer syndrome between September 2004 and March 2013. Mean follow-up period was 50 months (range 3-103 months). The time of symptom onset, occupational history, and detailed physical examination findings were recorded. Surgery was performed under sedation and axillary anesthesia. Distal segment of the forearm, all thrombosed segments of the Guyon and superficial arch were removed. Reconstruction of the ulnar artery and the superficial arch was performed using vein grafts obtained from the forearm. Results: While all patients' dominant hand was affected, both hands were affected in three patients. All patients complained of pain and color change in one finger or multiple fingers. While minimal amputation and debridement of fingertip pulp was performed in two patients, all other patients recovered uneventfully. Patency of the ulnar artery was uneventful at follow-up in five of the eight patients, whereas three patients were performed revision surgery for a new vein graft. Most patient complaints resolved during the follow-up period. Conclusion: Hypothenar hammer syndrome is a disease of the upper extremities that should be considered in patients with digital ischemia, and a history of manual labor and smoking. Although this disease can be treated with conservative therapy, advance-stage patients who fail to respond to conservative treatment can be treated surgically with vein grafts

Evaluating the Mechanical Behaviour of Geotextile Reinforced Sand

WOS: 000348259300004It is important to determine the mechanical properties of reinforced soils, since they are extensively used in practice. In this study, laboratory triaxial tests and direct shear tests were carried out in order to determine the stress-strain and dilation characteristics of geotextile-reinforced river sand. The mechanical behaviour of the composite material was investigated through varying the type of geotextile and confining pressure. Interface properties of geotextile-reinforced samples were evaluated with the direct shear tests. The results demonstrated that geotextile inclusion increases the peak strength, and reduces dilation especially at higher confining pressures

Intermolecular One-Pot Cyclization of Formyl-Pyrroles of Amino Acid Esters with Norephedrine: Stereoselective Routes to New Tricyclic Pyrrole—Pyrazine—Oxazole Fused Structures.

    No full text
The treatment of esters of amino acids with dimethoxytetrahydrofuran furnished pyrrole derivatives of amino acid esters. The Wilsmeier-Haack formylation followed by the reaction of the formylated pyrroles with norephedrine afforded a selective formation of the tricyclic pyrrole-pyrazine-oxazole fused structures in one step via the formation of an oxazoline structure and intramolecular lactam formation. Pyrrole-pyrazine-oxazole fused structures were achieved in good yields. The cyclization reaction for the formation of an oxazole ring worked selectively to form only one stereoisomer. The configuration of the newly generated stereogenic center in the oxazole ring is dependent on the stereogenic centers of norephedrine

Although the predictive power of economic metrics to detect the creditworthiness of the customers is high, there is a rising interest in the integration of cognitive, psychological, behavioral, alternative, and demographic data into credit risk systems and processing the data through modern methods. The primary motivation for the rising interest is increased customer classification accuracy. In this research, customer creditworthiness was modeled through data consisting of personality, money attitudes, impulsivity, self-esteem, self-control, and material values and processed through artificial intelligence. The obtained findings have been evaluated as a reference point for the following research. © 2022 IEEE.2-s2.0-8514187744
