Enhanced transmission of electromagnetic waves through split-ring resonator-shaped apertures

    Get PDF
The design of aperture shape is a promising approach for enhanced transmission through a subwavelength aperture. We designed split-ring-resonator (SRR)-shaped apertures in order to increase the transmission through subwavelength apertures by making use of the strong localization of the electromagnetic field in SRR-shaped apertures. We obtained a promising result of 104-fold enhancement by utilizing SRR-shaped apertures. It is possible to use these proposed structures at optical frequencies by making several modifications such as decreasing the sharpness of edges and increasing the gap width. Since SRRs are already being realized at optical frequencies, our proposed SRR-shaped aperture structures are promising candidates for novel applications

Recurrent spontaneous ovarıan hyperstımulatıon ın a virgın girl

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) develops due to the release of vasoactive mediators induced by excessively luteinized and enlarged ovaries. Most OHSS cases are iatrogenic subsequent to ovulation induction. We report the first case of recurrent OHSS developed during normal menstral cycle in a virgin girl, diagnozed with ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging

Multiple cystic echinococcosis mimicking metastatic malignancy

AbstractCystic echinococcosis is seen worldwide. Considerable public health problems are encountered in endemic areas, such as South and Central America, the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, Russia, China, Australia and New Zealand. We have presented a case of innumerable cystic echinococcosis of lung and liver. The multiple lesions of cystic echinococcosis in chest X-ray graphy can imitate the metastatic malignancy of lung

A Comparison of Topical or Retrobulbar Anesthesia for 23-Gauge Posterior Vitrectomy

Background. To compare the efficacy and safety of topical anesthesia versus retrobulbar anesthesia in 23-gauge vitreoretinal surgery. Materials and Methods. A total of 63 patients scheduled for 23 G posterior vitrectomy without scleral buckling procedures were included in the study. The patients were randomly assigned to receive either topical (Group 1, n=31) or retrobulbar anesthesia (Group 2, n=32). Postoperatively, patients were shown a visual analogue pain scale (VAPS) from 1 (no pain or discomfort) to 4 (severe pain or discomfort) to rate the levels of pain. Results. There was more discomfort in patients in Group 2 while anesthetic was administered (Group 1:  1.0±0, Group 2: 2.3±0.7, P=0.0001). Between the two groups the level of pain during surgery (Group 1: 1.4±0.5, Group 2: 1.5±0.5; P=0.85) was noted. There was also no significant difference between two groups postoperatively (Group 1: 1.2±0.4, Group 2: 1.3±0.4; P=0.28). There were no complications in either group related to the anesthetic technique. No patient needed sedation or anesthesia supplement during the surgery or postoperative period. Conclusion. Topical anesthesia in posterior vitrectomy procedures is an effective and safe method that is alternative to retrobulbar anesthesia

Aim: To investigate the effects of pregnancy on the sexual life of Turkish women Materials and Methods: One thousand twenty six pregnant women were included in the study. The Libido Scoring System, which is a questionnaire consisting of four questions about the frequency of intercourse, the partner initiating the intercourse, orgasm and masturbation status of the pregnant women, was completed by all patients. Both pre-pregnancy and pregnancy sexuality was evaluated independently using this scale. Results: The frequency of sexual intercourse during pregnancy significantly decreased from 3.07/week to 2.40/week (p<0.05). The masturbation rate during pregnancy was significantly lower than the pre-pregnancy period (3.6% vs 4.9 %, p<0.001). The percentage of pregnant women who never had an orgasm was significantly higher compared to the pre-pregnant period (21.7 % vs 10.8 %, p<0.01). The rates of initiation of sexual intercourse in the pre-pregnancy period by men and by women were 94.5% (970/1026) and 5.3% (54/1026) respectively. In pregnancy period the rates of initiation of sexual intercourse by man and woman were 93.4% (904/968) and 6.6% (64/968) respectively (p=0.0001). The mean libido scores during pregnancy were statistically lower than the pre-pregnancy period (6.38±0.04 vs 7.31±0.04, p<0.001). Conclusion: Pregnancy has a negative effect on the sexual life of women, but more prospective studies are required to clarify the mechanisms
