"Celestina" scholarship has devoted many pages to the influence of "Cárcel de amor" on the "Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea". However, this is not the only work by Diego de San Pedro that has left trace in the "Tragicomedia". Actually, his religious writings "La Passion trobada" and "Las siete Angustias de Nuestra Señora" could have played an important role in the composition of the tragic ending of "Celestina". In this article, I will enumerate the arguments in favour of the influence of the religious writings of Diego de San Pedro on "Celestina", both textual and structural. Moreover, I will offer a brief explanation on why and how San Pedro's religious poems were chosen to build the final acts of "Celestina"

La recepción de Terencio en la temprana imprenta manual y su repercusión sobre la caracterización genérica de «Celestina»: una perspectiva visual

Celestina no ha dejado de relacionarse con la obra de Terencio desde sus orígenes: no solo los lectores contemporáneos la identificaron como «terenciana», sino que sus ediciones ilustradas más tempranas están directamente en deuda con la de las Comoediae de Estrasburgo: Johannes Grüninger, 1496. Remontándose a los modelos manuscritos de las ediciones incunables ilustradas de Terencio, en este artículo se expone cómo la manera de ilustrar las comedias de Terencio en la Europa medieval y tempranomoderna repercute sobre la manera de ilustrar Celestina y da lugar a sus dos programas iconográficos característicos: el burgalés y el crombergueriano. Finalmente, se sugiere que la elección de uno u otro tiene consecuencias desde el punto de vista de la recepción y la percepción genérica de las Comoediae y de Celestina por parte de los impresores que los escogieron

Historical and literary influences on Tsarfati’s "Poem composed by the Poet upon his translation of the tale of Melibea and Calisto"

This article presents a literary analysis of the extant poetic prologue to the Hebrew adaptation of Celestina, written in Italy by Joseph ben Samuel Tsarfati at the beginning of the 16th century. The prologue is shown to be a product of various literary traditions, and an indication of the nature of the role of secular literature within the Jewish literary corpus. The poet reconciles and juxtaposes his literary inspiration, Celestina, and secular literary conceits with the conventions and character of Medieval Hebrew literature

The Middle Ages as Identity Marker in Heavy Metal: The Spanish Case

Medievalism is not alien to heavy metal music. It is actually a prominent feature of two of its most successful subgenres, power metal and pagan metal, and it recurs in the aesthetics and the lyrics of most classical heavy metal bands. Warriors, knights, sorcerers, minstrels, and the whole cast of contemporary popular medievalising literature and cinema alternate with Germanic mythology, traditional ballads, epic poetry, Crusaders, Vikings, and many other supposedly more historical topics. The reasons behind this fascination of heavy metal for the Middle Ages are not understudied, celebratory masculinity and a longing for a simpler, nobler, and more fulfilling lifestyle being the most cited causes. However, these two motives do not explain the apparent urge to naturalise the Middle Ages that can be felt nowadays. Bands move away from the generic medievalism of the old days and colour it with their own regional medieval cultural heritage. This paper explores the naturalisation process of heavy metal medievalism and its consequences through the case study of Spanish bands. First, it will determine which aspects of the Hispanic medieval cultural heritage are vindicated and why. Second, it will analyse how they are received within Spanish society and outside. Last, it will read the conclusions of both previous sections against the background of the current problematic of the appropriation of the Middle Ages by nationalistic and racist far-right groups, that is, the creation of a “Western male white identity”

¿UN PROGRAMA ICONOGRÁFICO ORIGINAL? MODELOS ALEMANES Y CASTELLANOS PARA LOS TACOS DE LA «TRAGICOMEDIA DE CALISTO Y MELIBEA», ZARAGOZA, EN LA OFICINA DE JORGE COCI A COSTA DE PEDRO BERNUZ Y BARTOLOMÉ DE NÁJERA, 17 DE JUNIO DE 1545

La serie de grabados de la edición de la Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea de Zaragoza, en la oficina de Jorge Coci a costa de Pedro Bernuz y Bartolomé de Nájera, 17 de junio de 1545, es la primera edición española ilustrada de la Tragicomedia que vuelve al esquema iconográfico de grabados de ancho de página estrechamente ligado al texto de la Comedia de Burgos. En este artículo demostraré que la edición zaragozana no solo se inspiró en su precedente burgalés, sino que también se sirvió de los grabados de ancho de página del esquema crombergueriano de las ediciones ilustradas impresas en castellano y de los de la traducción alemana impresa por Heinrich Steiner en Augsburgo en 1534

Perspectivas actuales del hispanismo mundial

Reúne las comunicaciones del XIX Congreso Internacional de la Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas (11-16 de julio de 2016, Universität Münster), que por desviarse del tema principal de la sección correspondiente, no han podido ser incluidas en "Aspectos actuales del hispanismo mundial. Literatura – Cultura – Lengua" (Berlín: De Gruyter, 2018).
