Endocrine gland abnormalities in thalassemia major: A brief review

    No full text
Thalassemia major (β-thalassemia) affects a significant segment of the population in certain areas of the world. Alterations in migration patterns have changed the geographic distribution of this disease and made it a worldwide health problem. Over the course of the past 2-3 decades hypertransfusion therapy has significantly increased the life expectancy, and improved the quality of life of these patients. At the same time there has been an increase in the frequency of complications of this therapy caused by iron overload. Endocrine gland abnormalities contributed little to the morbidity or mortality of β-thalassemia in the past. As a result of hypertransfusion therapy and increased longevity, however, endocrinopathies have become more common and contribute significantly to morbidity in these patients. In this article we briefly review the current understanding of endocrine gland abnormalities, primarily caused by iron overload, in patients with thalassemia major

Architecture means creating and building and it is among the arts which culminates the talent of developing human creativity power. Architecture is related to religious-humanistic culture and idea more than any other art. Iranian architecture is one of the richest samples of native architecture in the world which achievements cannot be denied. Features such as the humanization, autarky, avoidance of absurdity, etc. are used as the main branches in architecture of buildings. Also, the art of architecture in mosque and school, like any other sacred art, has semantically an exterior and an esoteric form, that the Divine Beauty can be seen in unity between the two. A beauty that is empty of form, as all forms are expressed in it. But the question raises here how thought and meaning has entered the architecture, and how they take physical manifestation. This paper, while examining the impact of Islamic thought in Iran traditional urbanism, especially Islamic schools; briefly examines how Islamic thought is reflected in the form of a symbol in decorations and the physical characteristics of religious buildings, as well as their expression and impact in non-religious buildings are examined. In this study, using a combined descriptive-interpretative method, the architecture of Shiraz Khan School is surveyed. It is among the qualitative researches. Its data is obtained from the desk and documentary studies. Keywords: Islamic foundations, Iranian valuable architecture, wisdom of art, ideas, Khan School in Shira

A study on the concepts and themes of color and light in the exquisite islamic architecture

Today, diverse ideologies, thoughts, and beliefs exist in the world all of which try to transfer concepts and ideas to others using the indirect language of semantics. In this regard, architecture, especially the valuable architecture of Iran with wide application and permanent presence in human life has gained considerable attention. Iranian art has always been in coordination with the spirit of Islam and an indicator of its truth. Architecture is where meaning is represented in the formal, structural, and spatial aspects. Light and color are two important visual elements of formation and cognition of architectural works. Color does not manifest by itself unless it is seen through a design, when becomes the origin of work and intervenes in its sense of space. It should be considered that how the existence of light and color in the patterns has been effective in the environmental psychology and how the space is defined in terms of these two elements? And whether the sole use of light and color in the historical architecture was to represent meaning? The present study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to review and explain the semantic elements of light and color, their application and conceptual features in the historical architecture and hence examines these two distinct elements in the art and architecture of the past and tries to find their semantic features to the extent that have influenced the face and essence of modern architecture in the hope of providing useful insights for the modern architecture. Keywords: Islamic architecture, light, color, concepts, exquisite architectur

Insurance is among the most important tools that have been devised to prepare readiness for dealing with threats. These valuable man-made tools with their capabilities have controlled many undesirable effects of unforeseen events. In each country, growth and development of insurance industry is considered as an indicator for evaluating the level of development. From the perspective of insurers, the risks of energy, especially the oil and gas industry, are known as high risks. Economic feasibility of the profitability of insurance related to oil and gas wells is the aim of this study that was performed through damage coefficient indicators and profit margin with scenario planning using engineering economics method. The results of this research indicate that the damage coefficient of this field of insurance is much lower than the whole insurance industry and have a suitable and very high profit margin. Therefore, due to the low damage coefficient and high profit margin and the stability of these types of insurance, their profitability is confirmed economically and investment and providing insurance coverage is adequately justifiable for these types of risk

In this research, the recovery of uranium from the phosphate ore of the Sheikh Habil-Iran mine using flotation/calcination-leaching processes has been investigated. A 75–150 μm phosphate ore particle size, sodium oleate as a collector with a concentration of 2,000 g/ton of rock, pH = 10, and 5 min flotation time were obtained as the optimum parameters of flotation using the reverse method, leading to phosphate ore with a grade of 180 ppm UO2, 36.1% P₂O₅, 7.22% SiO2, and CaO/P₂O₅ = 1.23. The optimum calcination parameters were selected as 100 μm phosphate ore particles size at D80, 900°C temperature, and 2 h heating time, which resulted in phosphate ore with a grade of 173 ppm UO2 and 31.9% P₂O₅. An L/S (liquid to solid ratio) = 5, 3 M sulfuric acid concentration, 80°C temperature, and 5 h leaching time were obtained as the optimum leaching parameters using the response surface methodological approach. The efficiency of uranium recovery from phosphate ore pre-treated by flotation and calcination methods was 84.2% and 75.2%, respectively. The results indicated that flotation has superiority over calcination as a pre-treatment method of phosphate ore in the Sheikh Habil-Iran mine

Background & objectives In recent years, Acinetobacter baumannii has been shown to be associated with several nosocomial infections, including pneumonia, bacteraemia, urinary tract infections, wound infection and meningitis. This organism can survive in the hospital environment and rapidly develops resistance to many antibiotics. The molecular genotyping can increase our knowledge about the spread of A. baumannii strains from one hospital to another and their drug resistance. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of antibiotic resistance profile as well as phylogenetic relationships of A. baumannii strains in Shahrekord teaching hospitals. Methods In this study, antibacterial susceptibility patterns of A. baumannii strains isolated from different clinical specimens (urine, blood, sputum) to amikacin, ampicillin/sulbactam, aztreonam, cefepime, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, imipenem, meropenem, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, piperacillin/tazobactam, tobramycin were tested using disk diffusion )Kirby-Bauer( method. Finally, genotyping of A. baumannii strains was performed using REP-PCR method. Results During this study, 50 samples of patients were identified as A. baumannii) 71%(, and their drug resistance rates were assessed. All A. baumannii strains were resistant to ceftazidime and cefepime and also a high rate of resistance to aztreonam, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, amikacin, imipenem, gentamycin, and ampicillin-sulbactam were observed. On the other hand, our results demonstrated nine genotype groups among A. baumannii strains based on REP-PCR method. Conclusion Due to the high prevalence of antibiotic resistance among isolated A. baumannii strains, similarities between different genotypes and the dispersion of these genotypes in different parts of Shahrekord hospitals, the implementation of infection control programs in different parts of the hospital is necessary. Article in PressErectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most prevalent male sexual disorders worldwide. When conservative treatment is unsuccessful, contraindicated or causes unacceptable side effects penile prosthesis implantation is a definitive option for the management of ED. Although considered a third-line therapy, it achieves the highest satisfaction rates as compared with non-surgical treatment. Three-piece inflatable penile prothesis (IPP) represents the most sophisticated implantable device, AMS 700CX™ and Coloplast Titan® being the two most commonly used. Although there are several studies evaluating patient satisfaction with either model, there is little published data comparing both models.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
