Rhetorical Moves in Applied Linguistics Articles and their Corresponding Iranian Writer Identity

AbstractEmerging from Kaplan's (1966) pioneering work on contrastive rhetoric, rhetorical organization is today practiced with current critical views in language teaching and is regarded as a major pedagogical tool in writing various articles. The present study aimed to investigate the possible relationship between generic organizations of research articles in applied linguistics Iranian journals and negotiation of researchers’ identities. Overall, 30 published research-based articles were selected randomly from four journals. After applying Pho's (2008b) model of move analysis, the obtained results were associated with the instances of writer identity using Hyland's framework (2002). The findings demonstrated different percentages of writer identity categories across different moves of articles. Results suggested that rhetorical moves performing various functions in articles need to be carried out by specific categories of authorial identity to better satisfy the expectations of their respective applied linguistics communities

Validation of the Interpretative Narrations of the Alternative Tribe (verse 54 sura Ma'edah) with Emphasis on Fakhr-Razi's Perspective

One of the most challenging verses of the Quran is the verse 54 of Sura Ma’edah. This verse is about coming of an alternative nation of apostates. Fakhr-Razi, introducing Abu Bakr as the only example of the verse, considers this verse to be the most compelling reason to prove his righteousness and tries to consolidate his view by other narrations. This descriptive-analytic study, focusing on the Fakhr-Razi’s view, first presents the five general views and arguments of each group regarding alternative tribe, then by validating documents of the traditions based on ‘Ammeh ( Sunni ) sources, proves that their narrational reasons are not authentic. Eventually, it will be proved that the first instance of the verse is Imam Ali (as) and his true companions, and the final example of the verse is Imam Zaman (AS) – may God hasten his reappearance- and his companions

Promoting Children's Creativity through Designing Urban Environments

One of the principles of developed countries is the existence of a talented innovative work force. Children and adolescents, as the creative assets of the future, are the basis and principle of the cities' dynamism and stability in the future; therefore, providing an open space for the creative talents of children and adolescents to flourish for providing the city's future need for them is necessary. Lack of proper standards for designing and open spaces in accordance with the needs of the children has led to studies regarding the attendance to the basic wishes and needs of children like health, transportation, support and education and the growth and flourishment of the children's creativity, as one of the child-friendly standards of cities has been pointed out.  With the belief that the physical environment must provide the conditions for living and flourishing the talents and capabilities of children through creating appropriate grounds, the goal of this study is to present a design guide in which guidelines are presented in order to improve environmental qualities of urban environments to educate the children's creativity.  In this study, which is of the interdisciplinary and practical nature, the descriptive-analytic approach has been used. Therefore, first through the study of the theoretical basis in the field of flourishing the children's creativity and analyzing it, the effective factors on nurturing children's creativity are found and then, the approaches of the child-friendly city and creative city are studied and analyzed and then, their coefficients in devising the design guide has been utilized. This guideline includes the principles and guidelines of urban design. These principles are comfort and convenience, connection with nature, complicatedness and mystery, creativity and innovativeness, flexibility, social interaction and collaboration with the children

A Change of Heart: Improving Speech Emotion Recognition through Speech-to-Text Modality Conversion

Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) is a challenging task. In this paper, we introduce a modality conversion concept aimed at enhancing emotion recognition performance on the MELD dataset. We assess our approach through two experiments: first, a method named Modality-Conversion that employs automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems, followed by a text classifier; second, we assume perfect ASR output and investigate the impact of modality conversion on SER, this method is called Modality-Conversion++. Our findings indicate that the first method yields substantial results, while the second method outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) speech-based approaches in terms of SER weighted-F1 (WF1) score on the MELD dataset. This research highlights the potential of modality conversion for tasks that can be conducted in alternative modalities

Background and Objectives. The purpose of the present study is to find the genes and SNP that influence BMD and postmenopausal Saudi women. Material and Methods. Two-hundred ethnic Saudi Arabian women with a diagnosis of postmenopausal osteoporosis were the subjects of this study. Baseline blood hematology, biochemistry, and bone panel were done. Blood was collected, and three TaqMan-MGB probes were used to analyze SNP variants in ALOX15 (rs7220870), LRP5 (C 25752205 10), and TNFRSF11B (C 11869235 10). Results. The variant of ALOX15 17p13 showed that the BMD of the spine was lower in the AA allele (P value <0.002) and fractures were highest at 50% compared to CC allele. In the TNFRSF11B gene, BMD of the hip and spine was significantly higher in the GG allele and the history of fractures was significantly higher in GG group. With regard to the LRP5 (C 25752205 10) gene, there was no significant difference between allele groups. Conclusion(s). This study shows that the genetic influence of osteoporosis in the Caucasian and Saudi Arabians population is similar. We believe that the same genetic markers that influence osteoporosis in the Caucasian race could be used for further studies in the Saudi Arabian population
