Maintaining protein homeostasis: early and late endosomal dual recycling for the maintenance of intracellular pools of the plasma membrane protein Chs3

[EN] The major chitin synthase activity in yeast cells, Chs3, has become a paradigm in the study of the intracellular traffic of transmembrane proteins due to its tightly regulated trafficking. This includes an efficient mechanism for the maintenance of an extensive reservoir of Chs3 at the trans-Golgi network/EE, which allows for the timely delivery of the protein to the plasma membrane. Here we show that this intracellular reservoir of Chs3 is maintained not only by its efficient AP-1-mediated recycling, but also by recycling through the retromer complex, which interacts with Chs3 at a defined region in its N-terminal cytosolic domain. Moreover, the N-terminal ubiquitination of Chs3 at the plasma membrane by Rsp5/Art4 distinctly labels the protein and regulates its retromer-mediated recycling by enabling Chs3 to be recognized by the ESCRT machinery and degraded in the vacuole. Therefore the combined action of two independent but redundant endocytic recycling mechanisms, together with distinct labels for vacuolar degradation, determines the final fate of the intracellular traffic of the Chs3 protein, allowing yeast cells to regulate morphogenesis, depending on environmental constraints

Libyostrongylus douglasii en la producción de avestruces

Nuestro objetivo es aportar datos de interés clínico específicos de estas aves de producción alternativa. De entre las diferentes patologías habituales en cría de avestruces nos hemos centrado en las parasitosis internas. Nos llamó la atención una parasitosis en particular, por ser la única enfermedad transmisible específica, conocida, del avestruz: el Libyostrongylus douglasii (vulgarmente llamado gusano alambre). Es un nematodo gastrointestinal muy presente en las granjas de avestruces y que produce grandes pérdidas económicas, dado que origina la muerte del 40 al 50% de los juveniles infestados y también ocasionalmente en adultos

On natural metalinguistic abilities in aphasia: a preliminary study

Natural metalinguistic abilities, which are put into play without explicit instructions, constitute the cognitive basis for a 'reflexive' use of language, a particular manifestation of the executive function when applied to language and verbal behaviour. This reflexive use entails a specific attentional activity by speakers and hearers with regard to linguistic outputs, and an intentional experience-based control over the language use. Putting into play natural metalinguistic abilities can be considered a significant factor for explaining different kinds of adaptive processes. Our results permit us to conclude that an impairment of metalinguistic abilities is involved in aphasia to different degrees. Moreover, the examination of preserved metalinguistic abilities provides an alternative way for assessing the degree of severity of impaired communicative behaviour by people with aphasia. Our procedure, presumably, will also be useful for suggesting new factors when designing therapeutic programmes

La lingüística clínica desarrolla una función descriptiva de la patología verbal, una función interpretativa de la conducta verbal patológica y de los procesos cognitivos subyacentes y una función rehabilitadora ajustada a los diferentes tipos de deficiencia verbal. A estos objetivos hay que añadir la función que la orientación clínica puede cumplir para la propia lingüística teórica. Las orientaciones aplicadas de la lingüística (y de otras disciplinas) constituyen el terreno ineludible en el que las aproximaciones teóricas al lenguaje deben someterse a crítica y, cuando ello se hace necesario, reformularse. Cardiopulmonary nematode infections in wild canids: Does the key lie on host-prey-parasite evolution?

The aim of this study was to describe the species diversity, prevalence and infection intensity of these parasites in the Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) and the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. 257 foxes and 74 wolves were necropsied between 2008 and 2014. Four nematode species were identified: Angiostrongylus vasorum, Eucoleus aerophilus, Crenosoma vulpis and Filaroides hirthi. This last species was only found in wolves, being the first time that is cited worldwide in this wild canid. The overall parasite prevalence was significantly higher in foxes (70%) than in wolves (28%). Specifically, prevalences in foxes and wolves were, respectively, 43% and 22% for A. vasorum, 33% and 5% for E. aerophilus, and 30% and 9% for C. vulpis. The prevalence of F. hirthi was 16%. The A. vasorum intensity was significantly higher in foxes than in wolves. Differences between host species in the risk of infection would be associated to diverging feeding behavior, and possibly reflects a parasite-host adaptation related to host's hunting strategies and cardiorespiratory requirements. This study revealed an association between infection and environmental factors, and highlighted a wide variation in the spatial distribution of A. vasorum. Our results indicate that cardiopulmonary parasites are widespread in wild canids in northwest Spain, and further agrees with other studies indicating the expansion of A. vasorum in Europe and, therefore, the urgent need to investigate infection in dogs in sympatric areas

Manuel Sacristán at the Onset of Ecological Marxism after Stalinism

Thirty-one years ago, in 1985, Manuel Sacristán died in Barcelona at the age of 59. After the publication in 2014 of a volume with some of his writings translated into English (Llorente 2014), it is time to help non-Spanish-speaking readers to know more about him. Yet it is not easy to explain to generations born after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 that Manuel Sacristán was a most important Marxist philosopher and at the same time one of the few pioneers introducing political ecology and antinuclear peace movement during the last quarter of the 20th century in Spain. Many people believe that Marxism, environmentalism and pacifism are views that exclude each other. Most of what has been said and done on behalf of Marxism since Stalin took over the leadership of the Communist Party of the USSR in the 1930s, up to its dissolution in 1991, contributes to sustaining this belief. The fast industrialization of the Old Russian Empire undertaken by the Soviet State was nowhere near taking into account ecological sustainability. En un primer momento se retoman las iniciales ideas de Veblen, Commons y Mitchell, buscando identificar en ellas el tópico que las conecta con el proceso de construcción de este marco analítico. En un segundo momento, se examina cómo la ideas de los protoinstitucionalistas mencionados, son retomadas por Coase, Williamson y North en tiempos y contextos relativamente lejanos a los que se plantearon los primeros enfoques, dándole forma a un enfoque analítico concebido para afianzar el rol de las organizaciones y promover la eficiencia en las transacciones sobre las que descansan el bienestar social, la transparencia política y el desarrollo económico.The text offered below has been structured based on the study of two key moments in the configuration of institutionalism. At first, the initial ideas of Veblen, Commons and Mitchell are taken up, seeking to identify in them the topic that connects them with the construction process of this analytical framework.
