    Coexistence and Criticality in Size-Asymmetric Hard-Core Electrolytes

    Liquid-vapor coexistence curves and critical parameters for hard-core 1:1 electrolyte models with diameter ratios lambda = sigma_{-}/\sigma_{+}=1 to 5.7 have been studied by fine-discretization Monte Carlo methods. Normalizing via the length scale sigma_{+-}=(sigma_{+} + sigma_{-})/2 relevant for the low densities in question, both Tc* (=kB Tc sigma_{+-}/q^2 and rhoc* (= rhoc sigma _{+-}^{3}) decrease rapidly (from ~ 0.05 to 0.03 and 0.08 to 0.04, respectively) as lambda increases. These trends, which unequivocally contradict current theories, are closely mirrored by results for tightly tethered dipolar dimers (with Tc* lower by ~ 0-11% and rhoc* greater by 37-12%).Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Reptile search algorithm (RSA)-based selective harmonic elimination technique in Packed E-Cell (PEC-9) inverter

    The multilevel inverters (MLIs) are capable of handling large quantities of power and generating high-quality output voltages. Consequently, the size of the filters is reduced, and the circuitry is simplified. As a result, they have a diverse range of uses in the industrial sector, especially in smart grids. The input voltage boosting feature is required to utilize the MLI with renewable energy. In addition, a large number of components are required to attain higher output voltage levels, which increases the cost of the circuit and weight. A variety of MLI topologies have been identified to reduce losses, device quantity, and device ratings. The selective harmonic elimination (SHE) approaches reduce distinct lower order harmonics by computing the ideal switching angles. This research presents a nine–level Packed E–Cell (PEC–9) inverter that uses selective harmonic elimination to eliminate total harmonic distortion. In order to calculate the best switching angle, the reptile search algorithm (RSA) is implemented in this paper, a nature–inspired metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the hunting behavior of the crocodile. The hunting behavior of crocodiles is implemented in two main steps: the first is encircling, which is accomplished by belly walking or high walking, and the second is hunting, which is accomplished by hunting cooperation or hunting coordination. In this technique, nonlinear transcendental equations have been solved. The simulation was run in the MATLAB R2021b software environment. The simulation results suggest that the RSA outperforms the other metaheuristic algorithms. Furthermore, the simulation result was validated on a hardware setup using DSP–TMS320F28379D in the laboratory

    Risk Factors for Severe Renal Disease in Bardet-Biedl Syndrome

    Bardet-Biedl syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive, multisystem disease characterized by retinal dystrophy, renal malformation, obesity, intellectual disability, polydactyly, and hypogonadism. Nineteen disease-causing genes (BBS1-19) have been identified, of which mutations in BBS1 are most common in North America and Europe. A hallmark of the disease, renal malformation is heterogeneous and is a cause of morbidity and mortality through the development of CKD. We studied the prevalence and severity of CKD in 350 patients with Bardet-Biedl syndrome-related renal disease attending the United Kingdom national Bardet-Biedl syndrome clinics to further elucidate the phenotype and identify risk indicators of CKD. Overall, 31% of children and 42% of adults had CKD; 6% of children and 8% of adults had stage 4-5 CKD. In children, renal disease was often detected within the first year of life. Analysis of the most commonly mutated disease-associated genes revealed that, compared with two truncating mutations, two missense mutations associated with less severe CKD in adults. Moreover, compared with mutations in BBS10, mutations in BBS1 associated with less severe CKD or lack of CKD in adults. Finally, 51% of patients with available ultrasounds had structural renal abnormalities, and 35% of adults were hypertensive. The presence of structural abnormalities or antihypertensive medication also correlated statistically with stage 3b-5 CKD. This study describes the largest reported cohort of patients with renal disease in Bardet-Biedl syndrome and identifies risk factors to be considered in genetic counseling

    Thermodynamics of Electrolytes on Anisotropic Lattices

    The phase behavior of ionic fluids on simple cubic and tetragonal (anisotropic) lattices has been studied by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Systems with both the true lattice Coulombic potential and continuous-space 1/r1/r electrostatic interactions have been investigated. At all degrees of anisotropy, only coexistence between a disordered low-density phase and an ordered high-density phase with the structure similar to ionic crystal was found, in contrast to recent theoretical predictions. Tricritical parameters were determined to be monotonously increasing functions of anisotropy parameters which is consistent with theoretical calculations based on the Debye-H\"uckel approach. At large anisotropies a two-dimensional-like behavior is observed, from which we estimated the dimensionless tricritical temperature and density for the two-dimensional square lattice electrolyte to be Ttri=0.14T^*_{tri}=0.14 and ρtri=0.70\rho^*_{tri} = 0.70.Comment: submitted to PR

    Integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analysis of pathogenic mycobacteria and their esx-1 mutants reveal secretion-dependent regulation of ESX-1 substrates and WhiB6 as a transcriptional regulator

    The mycobacterial type VII secretion system ESX-1 is responsible for the secretion of a number of proteins that play important roles during host infection. The regulation of the expression of secreted proteins is often essential to establish successful infection. Using transcriptome sequencing, we found that the abrogation of ESX-1 function in Mycobacterium marinum leads to a pronounced increase in gene expression levels of the espA operon during the infection of macrophages. In addition, the disruption of ESX-1-mediated protein secretion also leads to a specific down-regulation of the ESX-1 substrates, but not of the structural components of this system, during growth in culture medium. This effect is observed in both M. marinum and M. tuberculosis. We established that down-regulation of ESX-1 substrates is the result of a regulatory process that is influenced by the putative transcriptional regulator whib6, which is located adjacent to the esx-1 locus. In addition, the overexpression of the ESX-1-associated PE35/PPE68 protein pair resulted in a significantly increased secretion of the ESX-1 substrate EsxA, demonstrating a functional link between these proteins. Taken together, these data show that WhiB6 is required for the secretion-dependent regulation of ESX-1 substrates and that ESX-1 substrates are regulated independently from the structural components, both during infection and as a result of active secretion

    Performance enhancement of high degree Charlier polynomials using multithreaded algorithm

    Discrete orthogonal polynomials (DOPs) have gained significant research attention owing to their crucial role in digital signal processing applications such as computer vision, pattern recognition, and compression. However, the computation of DOP coefficients often incurs a substantial computational burden, exacerbating for higher-degree moments along with the resulting numerical errors. To address this challenge, this paper exploits the inherent parallelism in Charlier polynomial coefficient calculations to achieve enhanced polynomial performance. Independent calculations are distributed among threads, making efficient use of the available processing resources. Two algorithms are presented, the first algorithm evenly distributes the rows in a sequential manner (straightforward). Additionally, to achieve a more equitable distribution of coefficient calculations, this paper proposes alternative distribution approaches, aimed at balancing processing load among threads. Through extensive comparative experiments, we have confirmed that the proposed approaches achieved high performance across different degrees (1540 to 7370) and at different numbers of threads (2 to 256). The results show processing time in the multithreaded case is improved by up to 9.1 times with respect to the unthreaded case. Furthermore, by increasing the number of threads from 2 to 256, the trend indicates that the most significant improvement occurs in the range of 32 to 128 threads, confirming the robustness of the proposed algorithm.     Rational measures of agromelioration on grey soils

    In the conditions of grey soils in the south of Kazakhstan, the soil is degraded due to irrational use of irrigated land and non-compliance with agro-reclamation works in its order, as well as excessive irrigation of medium-saline soil, it negatively affects crop yields. In addition, on medium-saline soils, winter plowing is carried out only to a shallow depth of 30-32 cm. Mainly on grey soils, with timely and intensive soil treatment, it is preferable, since the degree of bulk mass of gray soils in a stable indicator is 1.28-1.30 g/cm3. If agrotechnological measures are carried out incorrectly, i.e. it affects the increase in soil density and its salinization, which negatively affects the growth and productivity of agricultural crops. In conditions of decreasing soil fertility, scientists of our scientific institution have carried out experimental work to identify the effects of effective agro-reclamation measures on irrigated saline lands, based on the rational use of irrigated agriculture in the south of Kazakhstan. The first issue that hinders the development of agricultural crops and the regulation of the condition of the rooting layer of plants in the soil is soil salinization and measures to combat them, since this issue is very relevant in conditions of increasing irrigated agriculture intensity
