    Assessment of Fertility Status of Soils Supporting Coconut (Cocus nucifera) Cultivation in Western and Central Regions of Ghana

    Coconut cultivation is mostly practiced in the Western and Central regions of Ghana. Information on the fertility status of the soils on which coconuts are grown and possible fertilizer recommendation is not common. Sincecoconut yield is generally related to the fertility status of the soil, a study was conducted to evaluate the fertility status of soils supporting coconut in the Western and Central regions. The soils were sampled at three depths, 0–20 cm, 20–40 cm and 40–60 cm at 21 different sites. The soil physical properties do not constitute any major limitation to good coconut growth and yield. Evaluation of the top soil showed that the mean top soil pH was very strongly acidic (4.1 + 0.12) and far below the acceptable limits for good coconut yield. Mean exchangeable acidity [0.57 0.06 cmol(+)kg-1] was relatively high while exchangeable basic cations (Ca, Mg and K) were generally very low. Mean effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) of 3.1 0.48 cmol (+) kg-1was very low. Mean organic matter status 22.1 1.9 gkg-1 was moderate. Mean available phosphorus of 2.8 0.56 mgkg-1 was very low and one of the major nutrients that will affect coconut yield. Except for soil pH, nutrient levels generally showed a decreasing trend in the order top soil > subsoil > sub-subsoil. The evaluation showed that the soils  suffer from multi-nutrient deficiency. Nutrient levels of the soils are low to very low, and will not support good coconut growth and yield. Liming to improve the exchangeable basic cations and pH of the soils is  recommended. Use of rock phosphate is also recommended for raising the levels of both phosphorus and some basic cations. Amendments and fertilizers with high K content must also be considered

    Distribution and conservation status of two endemic Tasmanian crustaceans, Allanaspides hickmani and Allanaspides helonomus (Syncarida: anaspididae)

    Extant representatives of the ancient crustacean family Anaspididae (Syncarida) are restricted to the island state of Tasmania, Australia. The most recently described species, Allanaspides helonomus Swain, Wilson, Hickman & Ong, 1970 and A. hickmani Swain, Wilson & Ong, 1971, were described from buttongrass moorland in southwestern Tasmania. Large areas of their habitat were subsequently inundated for hydroelectric power generation. We surveyed the extant distributions of A. hickmani and A. helonomus, assessed potential threats to the species, and reviewed their conservation status against state, national and international criteria. A. hickmani is restricted to a single catchment and occurs in a very small number (<10) of highly fragmented subpopulations on the margins of two hydroelectric impoundments. A. helonomus has a substantially larger range and Area of Occupancy spanning three separate catchments, and is now known to also occur in the Lake Pedder hydro-electric impoundment. Both species are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. This listing appears warranted for A. hickmani based on its restricted Area of Occupancy and the small number of extant subpopulations. However, A. helonomus no longer appears to fulfil the IUCN criterion for vulnerable. Neither species appears to be eligible for listing as vulnerable under the Australian Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act 1995. The current listing of A. hickmani as rare under the Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act 1995 appears warranted as extant subpopulations may be at risk of extinction. The level of risk for A. helonomus is considerably lower than is the case for A. hickmani, and A. helonomus may not be eligible for listing as rare. The potential impacts of climate change on buttongrass moorland may present the most serious long-term threat to the two Allanaspides species

    Association of Exposure to Phthalates with Endometriosis and Uterine Leiomyomata: Findings from NHANES, 1999-2004

    BACKGROUND. Phthalates are ubiquitous chemicals used in consumer products. Some phthalates are reproductive toxicants in experimental animals, but human data are limited. OBJECTIVE. We conducted a cross-sectional study of urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations in relation to self-reported history of endometriosis and uterine leiomyomata among 1,227 women 20-54 years of age from three cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 1999-2004. METHODS. We examined four phthalate metabolites: mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP), monobutyl phthalate (MBP), monoethyl phthalate (MEP), and monobenzyl phthalate (MBzP). From the last two NHANES cycles, we also examined mono(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP) and mono(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP). We used logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS. Eighty-seven (7%) and 151 (12%) women reported diagnoses of endometriosis and leiomyomata, respectively. The ORs comparing the highest versus lowest three quartiles of urinary MBP were 1.36 (95% CI, 0.77-2.41) for endometriosis, 1.56 (95% CI, 0.93-2.61) for leiomyomata, and 1.71 (95% CI, 1.07-2.75) for both conditions combined. The corresponding ORs for MEHP were 0.44 (95% CI, 0.19-1.02) for endometriosis, 0.63 (95% CI, 0.35-1.12) for leiomyomata, and 0.59 (95% CI, 0.37-0.95) for both conditions combined. Findings for MEHHP and MEOHP agreed with findings for MEHP with respect to endometriosis only. We observed null associations for MEP and MBzP. Associations were similar when we excluded women diagnosed > 7 years before their NHANES evaluation. CONCLUSION. The positive associations for MBP and inverse associations for MEHP in relation to endometriosis and leiomyomata warrant investigation in prospective studies

    Major decline in malaria morbidity and mortality in the Union of Comoros between 2010 and 2014: The effect of a combination of prevention and control measures

    Background. Malaria remains a public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. In response to this, many countries are working towards achieving the World Health Assembly and Roll Back Malaria Partnership target of a 75% decline in malaria incidence.Objective. To assess trends in malaria morbidity and mortality in the three islands of the Comoros Archipelago from 2010 to 2014.Methods. This was a retrospective study in which all confirmed malaria cases and deaths recorded between 2010 and 2014 were accessed from the national malaria control database. Trends and comparisons in malaria incidence and case fatality rates for all age groups, including under-5 children and pregnant women, were analysed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 16.Results. A substantial decline in malaria incidence was observed for each island between 2010 and 2014; from 75.98 cases per 1 000 population in 2010 to 0.14 in 2014 in Moheli, 60.60 to 0.02 in Anjouan and 235.36 to 5.47 in Grand Comoro. Additionally, a general reduction in malaria case fatalities was observed. In Moheli, there were no case fatalities between 2010 and 2014, while there was a decline in the case fatality rate in Anjouan (from 1.20 fatalities per 1 000 cases to 0) and Grand Comoros (0.51 to 0). There were also significant differences (p&lt;0.05) in malaria incidence and case fatalities between the three islands. A similar trend was observed for pregnant women and under-5 children.Conclusion. Our study indicates a significant decline in malaria morbidity and  mortality in the islands of Moheli, Anjouan and Grand Comoro from 2010 to 2014. This considerable reduction is attributed to a combination of malaria prevention and control interventions implemented during the study period

    Handwriting-Based Gender Classification Using End-to-End Deep Neural Networks

    Handwriting-based gender classification is a well-researched problem that has been approached mainly by traditional machine learning techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning-based approach for this task. Specifically, we present a convolutional neural network (CNN), which performs automatic feature extraction from a given handwritten image, followed by classification of the writer's gender. Also, we introduce a new dataset of labeled handwritten samples, in Hebrew and English, of 405 participants. Comparing the gender classification accuracy on this dataset against human examiners, our results show that the proposed deep learning-based approach is substantially more accurate than that of humans

    A systematic review of current knowledge of HIV epidemiology and of sexual behaviour in Nepal

    OBJECTIVE: To systematically review information on HIV epidemiology and on sexual behaviour in Nepal with a view to identifying gaps in current knowledge. METHODS: Systematic review covering electronic databases, web-based information, personal contact with experts and hand searching of key journals. RESULTS: HIV-1 seroprevalence has been rising rapidly in association with high-risk behaviours, with current levels of 40% amongst the nation's injecting drug users and approaching 20% amongst Kathmandu's female commercial sex workers (FCSWs). HIV seroprevalence remains low in the general population (0.29% of 15–49 year olds). There are significant methodological limitations in many of the seroprevalence studies identified, and these estimates need to be treated with caution. There are extensive migration patterns both within the country and internationally which provide the potential for considerable sexual networking. However, studies of sexual behaviour have focused on FCSWs and the extent of sexual networks within the general population is largely unknown. CONCLUSIONS: Whilst some of the ingredients are present for an explosive HIV epidemic in Nepal, crucial knowledge on sexual behaviour in the general population is missing. Research on sexual networking is urgently required to guide HIV control in Nepal. There is also a need for further good-quality epidemiological studies of HIV seroprevalence

    Rapid diagnostic tests for molecular surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum malaria -assessment of DNA extraction methods and field applicability

    Background: The need for new malaria surveillance tools and strategies is critical, given improved global malaria control and regional elimination efforts. High quality Plasmodium falciparum DNA can reliably be extracted from malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). Together with highly sensitive molecular assays, wide scale collection of used RDTs may serve as a modern tool for improved malaria case detection and drug resistance surveillance. However, comparative studies of DNA extraction efficiency from RDTs and the field applicability are lacking. The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate different methods of DNA extraction from RDTs and to test the field applicability for the purpose of molecular epidemiological investigations. Methods: DNA was extracted from two RDT devices (Paracheck-PfW and SD Bioline Malaria Pf/Pan (R)), seeded in vitro with 10-fold dilutions of cultured 3D7 P. falciparum parasites diluted in malaria negative whole blood. The level of P. falciparum detection was determined for each extraction method and RDT device with multiple nested-PCR and real-time PCR assays. The field applicability was tested on 855 paired RDT (Paracheck-Pf) and filter paper (Whatman (R) 3MM) blood samples (734 RDT negative and 121 RDT positive samples) collected from febrile patients in Zanzibar 2010. RDT positive samples were genotyped at four key single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in pfmdr1 and pfcrt as well as for pfmdr1 copy number, all associated with anti-malarial drug resistance. Results: The P. falciparum DNA detection limit varied with RDT device and extraction method. Chelex-100 extraction performed best for all extraction matrixes. There was no statistically significant difference in PCR detection rates in DNA extracted from RDTs and filter paper field samples. Similarly there were no significant differences in the PCR success rates and genotyping outcomes for the respective SNPs in the 121 RDT positive samples.     Projected effects on salt purchases following implementation of a national salt reduction policy in South Africa.

    OBJECTIVE: To assess the contribution of different food groups to total salt purchases and to evaluate the estimated reduction in salt purchases if mandatory maximum salt limits in South African legislation were being complied with. DESIGN: This study conducted a cross-sectional analysis of purchasing data from Discovery Vitality members. Data were linked to the South African FoodSwitch database to determine the salt content of each food product purchased. Food category and total annual salt purchases were determined by summing salt content (kg) per each unit purchased across a whole year. Reductions in annual salt purchases were estimated by applying legislated maximum limits to product salt content. SETTING: South Africa. PARTICIPANTS: The study utilised purchasing data from 344 161 households, members of Discovery Vitality, collected for a whole year between January and December 2018. RESULTS: Vitality members purchased R12·8 billion worth of food products in 2018, representing 9562 products from which 264 583 kg of salt was purchased. The main contributors to salt purchases were bread and bakery products (23·3 %); meat and meat products (19 %); dairy (12·2 %); sauces, dressings, spreads and dips (11·8 %); and convenience foods (8·7 %). The projected total quantity of salt that would be purchased after implementation of the salt legislation was 250 346 kg, a reduction of 5·4 % from 2018 levels. CONCLUSIONS: A projected reduction in salt purchases of 5·4 % from 2018 levels suggests that meeting the mandatory maximum salt limits in South Africa will make a meaningful contribution to reducing salt purchases

    Raising argument strength using negative evidence: A constraint on models of induction

    Both intuitively, and according to similarity-based theories of induction, relevant evidence raises argument strength when it is positive and lowers it when it is negative. In three experiments, we tested the hypothesis that argument strength can actually increase when negative evidence is introduced. Two kinds of argument were compared through forced choice or sequential evaluation: single positive arguments (e.g., “Shostakovich’s music causes alpha waves in the brain; therefore, Bach’s music causes alpha waves in the brain”) and double mixed arguments (e.g., “Shostakovich’s music causes alpha waves in the brain, X’s music DOES NOT; therefore, Bach’s music causes alpha waves in the brain”). Negative evidence in the second premise lowered credence when it applied to an item X from the same subcategory (e.g., Haydn) and raised it when it applied to a different subcategory (e.g., AC/DC). The results constitute a new constraint on models of induction
