WOS: 000393291900012OBJECTIVE: Cinacalcet reduces parathyroid hormone levels by increasing the sensitivity of the parathyroid gland to calcium. in this study, we firstly aimed to evaluate the efficacy of cinacalcet in Turkish hemodialysis patients. MATERIAL and METHODS: 4483 hemodialysis patients were screened and 469 patients who had used cinacalcet were included in the study. the patients were divided into 4 groups according to drug usage durations (Group 1: 3 months, Group 2: 6 months, Group 3: 9 months and Group 4: 12 months). the patients' Parathormone, Ca, P and CaxP levels at the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months were compared to the start of treatment and previous months. RESULTS: the levels of Parathormone, Ca, P and CaxP significantly decreased compared to their initial levels in all groups (from 1412 pg/ml to 1222 pg/mL for Parathormone, p< 0,001) in the 3rd month. However, this reduction was not continued in the subsequent months (Parathormone: 1381 pg/ml for the 12th month). CONCLUSION: Cinacalcet may not provide adequate benefit in control of hyperparathyroidism in Turkish hemodialysis patient population

Cetin, Mustafa/0000-0001-6342-436X;WOS: 000317946500069Background: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is defined as local or generalized aneurysmal dilatation of the coronary arteries. Although the etiology of CAE has not been identified completely, the most frequent cause is coronary atherosclerosis. It is known that an expansive remodelling occurs in atherosclerotic coronary arteries due to plague rupture and increased plague burden particularly in early stages. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) has important role in modulating smooth muscle tonus and vessel diameter. T-786 C polymorphism of the eNOS gene has been associated with altered function of this gene and its products. Experimental and clinical data suggesting that; in the absence of eNOS, endothelial functions and luminal remodeling is impaired, the vessel wall thickness is increased, atherosclerosis accelerated and got complicated. In this study, we investigated the eNOS gene polymorphism (T-786 C) in patients with CAE who live in the lakes distric

We report the discovery of a new short period pulsating variable in the field of exoplanet host star XO-2. Variable has been identified while it was being used as a comparison. In order to verify the variability of the candidate, a comprehensive follow-up was carried out. Period analysis of multi-band light curves revealed a very prominent and consistent pulsation periodicity ofP∼0.95" role="presentation" style="display: inline-block; line-height: 0; font-size: 17.219999313354492px; word-wrap: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 1px 0px; caret-color: rgb(17, 17, 17); color: rgb(17, 17, 17); font-family: Poppins; position: relative;">P∼0.95hours. Illness-related outcomes of illicit substance use disorder in adolescents with early onset schizophrenia: a multicenter study

No full text
Objectives: Lifetime co-occurring substance use disorders are common at the time of presentation for the treatment of primary psychosis. Our aim was to investigate the clinical characteristics of adolescents with early-onset schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (EOS), categorized as either with (EOS + SUD) or without SUD (non-SUD/EOS), in a multi-center sample. Methods: Between 2016 and 2022, 255 patients were evaluated across three tertiary-care inpatient units. Diagnoses were confirmed by the treating physician according to the DSM-5 during the hospital stay. The severity of symptoms was measured using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Results: The EOS + SUD group exhibited a higher illness onset, fewer years of education, longer duration of untreated psychosis (DUP), a higher frequency of male gender, more frequent hospitalizations, increased use of clozapine and zuclopenthixol LAI, along with higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder and conduct disorder. Notably, differences in DUP, clozapine use, and the number of hospitalizations did not persist in the multivariate logistic regression model. Conclusions: Our findings support the notion of SUD playing a role in modifying the course of illness in EOS. Future studies should emphasize exploring treatment responses to medications and interventions among youth with dual diagnoses

WOS: 000413425400010PubMed: 28884960Mucopolysaccharidosis type VI (MPS VI) is a lysosomal storage disorder (LSD) characterized by a chronic, progressive course with multiorgan involvement. In our study, clinical, biochemical, molecular findings, and response to enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for at least 6 months were evaluated in 20 patients with MPS VI. Treatment effects on clinical findings such as liver and spleen sizes, cardiac and respiratory parameters, visual and auditory changes, joints' range of motions, endurance tests and changes in urinary glycosaminoglycan excretions, before and after ERT were analyzed. ERT caused increased physical endurance and decreased urinary dermatan sulfate/chondroitin sulfate ratios. Changes in growth parameters, cardiac, respiratory, visual, auditory findings, and joint mobility were not significant. All patients and parents reported out an increased quality of life, which were not correlated with clinical results. The most prevalent mutation was p.L321P, accounting for 58.8% of the mutant alleles and two novel mutations (p.G79E and p.E390K) were found. ERT was a safe but expensive treatment for MPS VI, with mild benefits in severely affected patients. Early treatment with ERT is mandatory before many organs and systems are involved
