He
A Map of Things Known and Lost in Anne Enright’s The Green Road
The present contribution interprets Anne Enright’s most recent novel, The Green Road (2015), as the story of two decades of an Irish family that is used by the writer to offer an alternative fictional rendering of the history of Ireland and the Irish from the 1980s till the early twenty-first century, as well as, formally speaking, a further contribution to the Irish writers’ penchant for destabilizing the conventions of a literary genre too frequently associated with British settlement and stability (Eagleton 1995) and with nineteenth-century realism (Hand 2011); and, therefore, recurrently considered as unable to apprehend the disruptive and multifaceted condition of Ireland and the Irish. Enright goes from the particular to the universal: the story of the Madigans serves to cover the recent history of Ireland as well as to deal with concerns such as motherhood, religion, sex, aging depression, illness, materialism and migrations, among others.
James Joyce’s Echoes in Caitriona Lally’s Portrait of Dublin City
James Stephens and James Joyce have been mentioned as referents for Caitriona Lally’s highly acclaimed debut novel, Eggshells (2015). The present contribution intends to study this new brilliant rendering of the city of Dublin through the eyes of allegedly ‘changeling’ Vivian, whose Joycean creative musings on language serve her to portray contemporary Dublin, as well as to imaginatively project portals to other worlds where she can feel more at ease.James Stephens and James Joyce have been mentioned as referents for Caitriona Lally’s highly acclaimed debut novel, Eggshells (2015). Gender and Genre Issues in Short Stories Written by Women
[Abstract] In this round table we intend to review the remarkable contribution of women to the development of the short story in English as well as to discuss the possibility of detecting gender differences in their stories both at a thematic and at an aesthetic level. Therefore, Mª Jesús Lorenzo Modia will describe the antecedents of the short story in the eighteenth century through the emergence of periodical publications such as The Tatler and The Spectator. Stories by male and female writers included in these and other publications will be analysed by Lorenzo Modia in order to provide a panorama of the eighteenth-century short story. Margarita Estévez Saá will review the proliferation of short stories written by women in the nineteenth century and study the peculiar case of the ghost story, a favourite “subgenre” for women readers and writers. María Losada Friend will exemplify with the figure of Edna O’Brien and her work Lantern Slides, the contribution of women writers to the so-called “composite novel” commenting on its function as a unifying structure of short stories and studying some of its antecedents and possible sequels in English and Irish literature. Finally, José Manuel Estévez Saá will discuss the panorama of multiethnic postcolonial short stories written by women in the twentieth century and the interest of the thematic and aesthetic concerns displayed by their authors
Metal-catalyzed Cyclizations to Pyran and Oxazine Derivatives
NOTICE: This is the peer reviewed version of the following article: Varela, J. A., Saá, C. (2016). Metal-catalyzed Cyclizations to Pyran and Oxazine Derivatives. Synthesis, 48, 20, 3470-3478. [doi: 10.1055/s-0035-1562466]. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Thieme Terms and Conditions for self-archiving.Pyrans are privileged heterocyclic structures found in numerous natural compounds with extraordinary biological activities. The synthesis of these relevant structures has attracted a great deal of attention over the years. Catalytic methodologies based on the activation of neutral unsaturated functionalities of acyclic compounds that undergo intramolecular cyclizations have achieved prominent synthetic relevance. In this short review, we discuss the successful construction of dihydropyran and dihydro-1,4-oxazine derivatives from acyclic precursors by metal-catalyzed intramolecular cyclizations through carbon–carbon, carbon–oxygen, and carbon–nitrogen bond formation. Remarkable synthetic applications are highlighted. This work was supported by the Spanish MINECO (project CTQ2014-59015R), the Xunta de Galicia (project GRC2014/032) and the European Regional Development Fund (projects CTQ2014-59015R and GRC2014/032).
