    We study the evolution of initially extended distributions in the coined quantum walk on the line by analyzing the dispersion relation of the process and its associated wave equations.     Discrete-time quantum walks on one-dimensional lattices

    In this paper, we study discrete-time quantum walks on one-dimensional lattices. We find that the coherent dynamics depends on the initial states and coin parameters. For infinite size of lattice, we derive an explicit expression for the return probability, which shows scaling behavior P(0,t)t1P(0,t)\sim t^{-1} and does not depends on the initial states of the walk. In the long-time limit, the probability distribution shows various patterns, depending on the initial states, coin parameters and the lattice size. The average mixing time MϵM_{\epsilon} closes to the limiting probability in linear NN (size of the lattice) for large values of thresholds ϵ\epsilon. Finally, we introduce another kind of quantum walk on infinite or even-numbered size of lattices, and show that the walk is equivalent to the traditional quantum walk with symmetrical initial state and coin parameter.Comment: 17 pages research not

    Strain in InP/ZnSe, S core/shell quantum dots from lattice mismatch and shell thickness : material stiffness influence

    We investigate the buildup of strain in InP quantum dots with the addition of shells of the lower-lattice constant materials ZnSe and ZnS by Raman spectroscopy. Both materials induce compressive strain in the core, which increases with increasing shell volume. We observe a difference in the shell behavior between the two materials: the thickness-dependence points toward an influence of the material stiffness. ZnS has a larger Young's modulus and requires less material to develop stress on the InP lattice at the interface, while ZnSe requires several layers to form a stress-inducing lattice at the interface. This hints at the material stiffness being an additional parameter of relevance for designing strained core/shell quantum dots

    Measurement of polarization-transfer to bound protons in carbon and its virtuality dependence

    We measured the ratio Px/PzP_{x}/P_{z} of the transverse to longitudinal components of polarization transferred from electrons to bound protons in 12C^{12}\mathrm{C} by the 12C(e,ep)^{12}\mathrm{C}(\vec{e},e'\vec{p}) process at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). We observed consistent deviations from unity of this ratio normalized to the free-proton ratio, (Px/Pz)12C/(Px/Pz)1H(P_{x}/P_{z})_{^{12}\mathrm{C}}/(P_{x}/P_{z})_{^{1}\mathrm{H}}, for both ss- and pp-shell knocked out protons, even though they are embedded in averaged local densities that differ by about a factor of two. The dependence of the double ratio on proton virtuality is similar to the one for knocked out protons from 2H^{2}\mathrm{H} and 4He^{4}\mathrm{He}, suggesting a universal behavior. It further implies no dependence on average local nuclear density

    Pionic Deuterium

    The strong interaction shift and broadening in pionic deuterium have been remeasured with high statistics by means of the (3p-1s) X-ray transition using the cyclotron trap and a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. Preliminary results are (-2325+/-31) meV (repulsive) for the shift and (1171+23/-49} meV for the width, which yields precise values for the pion-deuteron scattering length and the threshold parameter for pion production.Comment: Conf.     Facilitating the registration of biocontrol organisms, plant extracts and semiochemicals in Europe

    The legal regulation of plant protection products (Dir. 91/414/ EEC) is a bottleneck in the market introduction of new microbial biocontrol agents, plant extracts and pheromones. In contrast, invertebrate biocontrol agents (“beneficials”) are not registered at EU level. The EU-funded project REBECA suggested improvements to accelerate the regulation process and make it more cost-effective, without compromises to the level of safety. Representatives of all stakeholder groups participated in the REBECA workshops. The EU Commission and Member States are encouraged to improve the registration of biocontrol organisms, plant extracts and semiochemicals at EU and/or national level.     Precision determination of the dpi -> NN transition strength at threshold

    An unusual but effective way to determine at threshold the dpi -> NN transition strength is to exploit the hadronic ground-state broadening in pionic deuterium, accessible by x-ray spectroscopy. The broadening is dominated by the true absorption channel dpi- -> nn, which is related to s-wave pion production pp -> dpi+ by charge symmetry and detailed balance. Using the exotic atom circumvents the problem of Coulomb corrections to the cross section as necessary in the production experiments.
