    Modal Analysis of Fluid Flows: An Overview

    Simple aerodynamic configurations under even modest conditions can exhibit complex flows with a wide range of temporal and spatial features. It has become common practice in the analysis of these flows to look for and extract physically important features, or modes, as a first step in the analysis. This step typically starts with a modal decomposition of an experimental or numerical dataset of the flow field, or of an operator relevant to the system. We describe herein some of the dominant techniques for accomplishing these modal decompositions and analyses that have seen a surge of activity in recent decades. For a non-expert, keeping track of recent developments can be daunting, and the intent of this document is to provide an introduction to modal analysis in a presentation that is accessible to the larger fluid dynamics community. In particular, we present a brief overview of several of the well-established techniques and clearly lay the framework of these methods using familiar linear algebra. The modal analysis techniques covered in this paper include the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), balanced proper orthogonal decomposition (Balanced POD), dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), Koopman analysis, global linear stability analysis, and resolvent analysis

    Operational optimisation of water supply networks using a fuzzy system

    This paper presents a fuzzy system to control the pressure in a water distribution network, by using valves and controlling the rotor speed of the pumping systems. The variable frequency drive tracks the minimum head of the pumping system, while the control valves have the function of eliminating the excess pressure at various points of the network. The control system can track any reference pressure value and there is no limit for the number of monitored points. Experiments were carried out to demonstrate the fuzzy system’s efficiency. By extrapolating the results achieved in the experimental setup to a real hydraulic network with leakages and no pressure control, the volumetric losses could be reduced by more than 56%. The experiments showed that the system is robust enough to control the pressure of an experimental setup of water distribution. Besides, the proposed system can be easily applied to similar water supply systems and would help to reduce the consumption of water and electricity, as well as to reduce the maintenance costs

    THE REMOVAL EFFICIENCY OF ORGANIC LOADING, PHOSPHATES AND DETERGENTS IN WASTEWATER OF CAR WASH SERVICE BY CONSTRUCTED WETLAND SYSTEM

    The car wash wastewater has a proportion of detergent  and it can cause considerable impacts to pollute the environment and health if they are not processed in well. SSVF CW is one of  an alternative wastewater treatment, because it has the advantage such as wastewater flowing below the surface of the media so it  reduces the smell of wastewater. The objective of this study was to determine the  removal efficiency of reducing pollutants in the wastewater of treated car wash by Constructed Wetland and the influence of Chrysopogon zizanioides rhizosphere depth in supplying DO distribution. This experimental laboratory scale study used 2 PVC for reactor. Each pipe has 4 sampling points. The DO was measured from different depth, while the other parameters were from the effluent. The ratio of the media used was  1:3:2:4 from the top to the bottom. The SSVF CW system had high TSS removal efficiency of 94.74%, while the removal efficiency of COD, Detergent, and Phosphate was76.21%, 54.54%, 30.65%, respectively. DO distribution at a depth of 84 cm in both pipes increased even though the root zone was only 26.5 cm.
